1936 Bombay Mint British India Half Rupee

This is a very pretty silver (.917) Shilling sized coin minted in Bombay. For some reason British Raj Indian coins are very undercollected and because of that, somewhat under valued in my opinion. These coins are Brilliant Uncirculated (I have 32 at time of writing) and all exhibit beautiful lustre across every part of the coin. The current Krause catalogue value for these is currently US$28.00 (GB£15-16) each, but they are very rarely sold at those kind of prices.

Just as a comparison: You would probably pay around GB £15.00+ for a British Shilling of 1936 in the same condition, which is of course the same date, same size, made of lesser fineness silver and even has exactly the same king on it! Madness.

I feel that if I charged GB £15.00 for each coin, I'd probably sell them very slowly, so here is a chance to get a British colonial bargain. The picture really doesn't do them justice.

Sold for: £5.00 - £6.50 (EUR9.30 / US$11.70) each

British Proof Sterling Silver Regional Pound Coins

pound1994pp.jpg (24658 bytes)

This special sterling silver (92.5% pure) proof One Pound coin features the United Kingdom design. Housed in a high quality blue padded and felted hinged case that measures 65x65x22mm and features the Royal mint emblem on the inside. The coin is encapsulated (removable but not recommended), weighs 9.5 grams, measures 22.5mm in diameter and is almost 3mm thick. The mintage numbers are very low and a certificate is present in each case with full details on the coin.

1988 Silver Pound Coin, The whole UK - Coin perfect in every way. Box virtually perfect. Current official UK catalogue value £35.00, only 50,000 examples exist Worldwide. Sold in Feb 2004 for: £20.00 (EUR28.00 / US$32.00)

British 1997 Royal Wedding anniversary Crown and Stamp set

weddingcrownandstamps.jpg (111478 bytes)

Now I'm not a Royal biographer by any means, but I imagine Price Phillip is sometimes not that easy to live with, judging by his remarks! For instance when Price Charles was born Phillip wanted him to also take his surname and be Charles Mountbatton-Windsor. When this was not allowed he said 'That makes me a bloody amoeba!'....Classic!

The Queen had been married to HRH Prince Phillip for 50 years in 1997, so that deserved a little something to mark the endurance/occasion.

This 1997 Crown proof coin, produced in Sterling silver is accompanied by the official Royal Mail wedding anniversary stamp presentation set. Coin and stamp set are perfect in every way.

The Stamp set was never issued with this proof coin officially, but I have decided to put them together as they celebrate the same thing.

Current official UK catalogue value £35.00 (plus stamp set), only 33,689 coins were minted (putting the items together was my idea, that makes them even less common!) Sold in Jan 2004 for: £25.00 (EUR35.50 / US$40.00)

Silver proof Pound coins

1987 Silver Pound Coin, England - Coin perfect in every way. Box off white inside. Outside of the box is perfect. Current official UK catalogue value £30.00, only 50,000 examples exist Worldwide. Sold in Jan 2004 for: £14.00

1994 Silver Pound Coin, Scotland - Slight damage to the inside of the plastic capsule (not visible when on display), rest perfect, as issued. Current official UK catalogue value £40.00, only 25,000 examples exist Worldwide. Sold in Jan 2004 for: £19.00

British Proof Sterling Silver Two pound coins

2pound1994pp.jpg (23436 bytes)

These special sterling silver (and gold plated) proof Two Pound coins are very collectable, and like all Royal Mint proof coins, issued in strictly limited quantities. Each one is housed in a high quality padded and felted hinged case featuring the Royal mint emblem on the inside. The coin is encapsulated (removable, but not recommended), and a certificate is present in each case with full details of the coins specifications.

Another good long term investment as the mintage numbers are very low. (click on the blue title to see the picture)

1994 Tercentenary of the Bank of England, Sterling silver Two Pound Coin perfect in every way. Box and certificate also perfect. Current official UK catalogue value £30.00, only 27,957 examples exist Worldwide. Sold in Jan 2004 for: £19.00

1997 Two Pound coin - First British Bi-Metallic coin, Sterling silver centre with 24ct gold plated Sterling silver outer ring. Coin perfect in every way. Box and certificate also perfect. Current official UK catalogue value £29.00, only 29,910 examples exist Worldwide. Sold in Jan 2004 for: £18.00

1997 Two Pound coin - First British Bi-Metallic coin, Piedfort striking, Sterling silver centre with 24ct gold plated Sterling silver outer ring. The piedfort striking is double the thickness of the standard coin, and always has an even lower mintage. Coin perfect in every way. Box and certificate also perfect. Current official UK catalogue value £60.00, only 10,000 examples exist Worldwide. Sold in Jan 2004 for: £36.00

1977 British Proof Sterling Silver Jubilee Crown

An absolutely flawless example of this popular issue commemorating the Silver Jubilee of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. The box and coin are perfect as is the enclosed certificate. The case is still housed in its thick cardboard outer, stamped 'UK JUBILEE' (Not shown). The coin is just beginning to tone beautifully and appropriately the coin is silver and so was the jubilee! Current official UK catalogue value £22.00.

Sold in January 2004 For: £14.00

3 Coin British Gold Proof set, 1988

[ Alternate picture 1 :|: The Certificate ]

Click on main image to see a larger picture

Beautiful and low mintage 1988 British 22ct Gold Proof 3 coin set, consisting of a Proof striking £2 coin (Fine gold content: 0.4708oz), a Proof striking Sovereign (Fine gold content: 0.2354oz) and a Proof striking half sovereign (Fine gold content: 0.1177oz). Altogether 0.8239oz of pure gold. The head side of the Half Sovereign has slight toning present on the Queen.

Only 11,192 of these set were produced by the Royal Mint and I would imagine the number surviving is possibly less than that as the coins on their own also have significant value. This set is Number 8588.

The current catalogue value of this set now is £425 (US$743.75) and that value has risen by an impressive £100 in just 1 year (since the official catalogue value last year). It is quite likely that it will rise again in 2005 and this set should therefore be a sound investment.

I need to raise some capital to purchase more coins, so am offering this set for I believe the lowest price you'll be able to find, for a quick sale. £115 less than the current catalogue value.

Sold: as part of a deal for £260.00!!)

1953 Cased Proof Set

53proofset1.jpg (37212 bytes)

Picture of case

A quite uncommon 1953 cased Crown to Farthing proof set. The set is complete and even comes with its original smell! The coins are as struck. Some of the coins have slight toning, the Cupro-nickel and brass coins are generally very good but the bronze coins (mainly the 1/2D and Farthing) have been toned a little by the red velvet backing. The Half Crown and Crown have a couple of light scratches in the fields but are really nothing to worry about.

It will be posted with each coin wrapped separately in safe envelopes and using copious bubble wrap. Catalogue price is currently £100.00 for the set or £135.00 for the coins individually (I don't understand how the case can be worth minus £35.00!)

Sold in December 2003 for: £85.00 (EUR121.50 / US$148.75)

1937 Coronation of George VI and Queen Elizabeth

coronation1937.jpg (10426 bytes)

A large Bronze coloured heavy medal commemorating the Coronation of George VI and his Queen Elizabeth (The late Queen Mother). It is in its original box but the box lid is not in great shape. The medal is absolutely as struck and features a beautiful image of a standing Britannia on the Reverse. As you see the conjoined busts of the New king and Queen are on the Obverse.

Sold in December 2003 for: £15.00 (EUR21.00 / US$26.00)

1935 Official Silver Jubilee Coin

gvjubilee.jpg (21398 bytes) gvjubileecoin.jpg (65636 bytes)

In 1935 the last King to actually lead troops into battle on horseback (so I read somewhere!) celebrated his 25th year on the British throne. The Grandfather of the present Queen was 70 years of age when the Jubilee was celebrated in 1935 and sadly passed away just months after in January of 1936.

This item is the Official Commemorative coin and was issued to accompany the Silver Jubilee Crown featuring the Art deco St George and the dragon, seen here. The coin is the work of the engraver Percy Metcalfe who was at that time producing fine mini works of art for the Royal Mint. The coin is in as struck condition and contained within its original box featuring '1910 - 1935' Royally crowned. The sterling silver coin is beautifully toned and the box, despite some slightly worn edges is in remarkable shape.

Sold December 2003 for: £35.00 (EUR49.50 / US$61.25)

Admiral Horatio Nelson and his Flagship Foudroyant GEF with lustre.

A one off, rare opportunity to purchase a large (37.5mm dia) Nelson commemorative coin struck using copper from the 'Foudroyant' in circa 1897. The front features a bust of 'Horatio Viscount Nelson' with 'Born 29th September 1858, Died 21st October 1805' under him. The reverse shows the 'Foudroyant, Nelsons flagship' and gives information about when it was built, launched and wrecked and states the coin is made of its copper after breaking up.

The coin is in remarkable condition with the only visible wear being to Nelson's cheek, hair and a small area at the back of the ship. Because of the high releif the scan is slightly blurry and really doesn't capture the detail and clear remains of mint lustre between the lettering and in other low areas.

I'd recommend not hanging around on this one! If you want it, contact me because I don't think it will be here long.

Sold August 2003 For: £50.00 (EUR70.00 / US$80.00)

Complete Set of Widow Head Victorian Pennies 1895-1901

Queen Victoria, the longest reigning British Monarch ever, was Queen from 1837-1901. Pennies were issued in nearly every year of her 64 year reign. The new size bronze 'Bun' penny, so called because the Queen was shown with her hair in a bun was introduced in 1860 and was struck until 1894. In 1895 the Queen was 76 and her bust was changed to an older portrait not showing the Queen as a 41 year old! The approved design was known as the 'Widow' head or 'Veiled' head and was featured on all coins from 1895 until her death in 1901. This complete type set of Bronze pennies includes a coin from each year from 1895 until her death in 1901 (7 coins).

British Victorian pennies

Conditions of the coins: All the coins will be circulated examples and be very much like the set shown above. I will not include any damaged coins, holed coins, coins with 'Bronze disease' (green verdigris) or previously polished coins. All the coins will have even tones and wear and be hand picked. The best examples maybe in near fine condition with a little detail, but all the major design elements will all be clear.

Sold August 2003 For, Price per set: £3.00 (EUR4.20 / US$4.80)

Complete Set of British Edwardian Pennies 1902-1910

Edward "The Peacemaker" was already 60 when he came to the Throne after the death of Queen Victoria in 1901. Coins were issued from 1902 until his death in 1910. Because of the short Reign, Edward's coins have always been a popular series to collect as most of the coins for the 9 different dates are relatively easy to come by. This item is a complete set of Edward VII Pennies, all dates 1902-1910 (9 coins).

Edward VII 1908 cased Maundy set

Maundy money 1908 | The case | Coins in case

Every year on Maundy Thursday the monarch gives sets and odd coins with a face value of his/her age to the same number of men and women as he/she has years. Each set has a face value of 10 pence and consists of a 4 pence, 3 pence, 2 pence and 1 pence. The coins are small silver coins and in recent years are not normally circulated. This ceremony still goes on today and has existed for many hundreds of years!

In 1908 Edward VII was 67 years old, so 67 men and 67 women received 67 pence each (6 complete sets plus the odd 7p). If my maths is correct that means there were only 804 1908 Maundy sets issued (67+67 x 6).

Sold August 2003 for: £30.00 (EUR42.00 / US$48.00)
