Onchan Internment Camp Coins

Recommended Posts

Guest Guest_Boneo_I'm_a_Guest

I came across these in a box of coins left to the family by my grandfather. Most of them are worthless, but these ones seem vaguely promising. Apparently they were tokens used by internees in the camp at Onchan, Isle of Man during the second world war. The internees were all german residents in the UK, mostly jewish refugees fleeing from persecution at home. Anyway, internet research has come up mostly blank, with a few sites listing figures varying between £5 and £100, which isn't particularly helpfull. I have a 1d and 1/2d coin and was wondering if they were worth anything?

That is a picture I found for the 1d coin, mine are in slightly better condition than that, and are not worn very much, but theyre not particularly shiny or anything.

Thanks for any info.

I've never seen them before and I believe I'm quite familar with UK coins.

However I'm sure there are specialists out there...Good luck.

Ps...its the sort of thing that gets 99p on Ebay or really takes off.

Those are something that would interest me (being in Germany) but I've never seen the likes before.

So no ideas as to value? I plan on taking them to the coin shop in town, but if theyre that unheard of I doubt the owner would have heard of them, and I don't want to be fleeced for 50p or something when they could be worth a bit more than that.

Thanks very much for the offer, but if there not worth much I'd rather keep them, as they have a little sentimental value. That sentimental value is overuled though if theres lots of money on offer, as Im in quite a bit of a bind as far as money is concerned. If you get any prices on them be sure to PM me or something and I shall send it to you if it is worth anything.

Oh they're listed under the Isle of Man in the Krause World coin book. The Halfpenny is rarer. If they are comparable or better than the one in the picture then they could be worth at least £35 for the pair...I'd have to access the eye appeal. True Uncirculated examples are worth 3x that.

PM me if you want my address.
