Recommended Posts

wondered whats happened here with this coin, just a bit of waste metal caught up in the manufacturing process or a flaw in the die? Also damaged bead!!..........just poor manufacture???

You are probably right that it's just a spare piece of metal. I've got several new design 20ps with all sorts of minor crap on them. I keep them for interest but I doubt they will have any special value over time. I'm just a bit surprised that the Mint seems to have such trouble with quality control, although I guess once in circulation, such coins are just that, circulating coins.

yea i guess so, interesting to pick out different examples from my change, but maybe also a definate slip in standards of minting.

I have seen quite a few of the New Design coins with all manner of 'Cuds' and marks etc. on them. Particularly the 1p and 2p, but on other Denominations as well.

I'm not sure if it is a problem with the actual Minting Process or with Quality Control , or a mixture of both, that we are getting to see so many examples of them.

They do make for an interesting little oddities, but I agree that there would be little value to them.

Although the last time that I browsed E-Bay, there were several examples on there. lol

well ive popped em into those paper coin envelopes, purely so as my grandchildren (if my sons ever get round to it) can ask, why did the silly old fool put two away, they may even look and try and find the differences.

I think that one way to look at it is in the future, if your Grandchildren should appear, at the very least they will have a couple of nicely preserved examples. :)

RobJ,

My most interesting is a 2006 example, with the queen wearing a Bluetooth.

Here's a pic of the coin. For some reason the Bluetooth doesn't show up too well - probably the angle of the light. You can also tell that this is the correct die from the fact that its a lifelike portrait with the queen having warts!!!
