I expect a quite small market, but it is (as far as I can tell) the only book on reading and understanding specifically Arabic coins. It's a book originally published in 1973, then revised in 1980, by Richard Plant and it's been in and out of print a couple of times since then. It was originally also translated into Russian! I want to provide affordable assistance to inquisitive people both now and for future generations, so hope to keep it in print in one shape or another for eternity, even if I won't be able to retire from it! For a few quid it can become part of your field or experience.

Hi Mark, I used sodium bicarb plus salt in hot water with aluminium foil in the bottom of the dish. I tried to make the solution fairly weak so I could control the reaction by removing the coin and then washing it. I did this about 3 times (hard on the fingers with the hot water) until I was happy with the result. I looked around at various commercial silver dips to see if they would be suitable but most contained sulfuric acid which I thought would not be very good for coins. Johnj

Just curious Paul, did the seller of your fake not say anything or ask why it was fake etc? Or did they just and the cash back? He accepted what I said (the 180 degree rotation is pretty conclusive!) and said he would be returning it to DNW!! Also that it was 'embarrassing' - no quibbles

The best way to start with this is to let the reaction begin slowly, with warm water. Then if not much is happening increase the water temp for a quicker reaction, and wash of any remnants with distilled water, rather then tap water to prevent water marks,or other foreign material sticking to the surface. Definitely a better looking coin now, with no real harsh treatment to the coin.

There have been other threads 'cross the pond - Taco Bell Restaurant napkins that have a bit of sulfur in them have been used to great effect...
