A Thurrock type potin, i think these were the first coins to be struck in Britain, my first Iron Age coin from an unrecorded Roman villa site i discovered and detect, had plenty of late iron age/ early roman pottery so there was always the chance of some iron age metalwork , this type dates from around 150 Bc to 120, A nice time of year to be out in the fields detecting, albeit a tad muddy,

the only gold stater i have found in 12 years, and its a plated one at that lol, all the left facing wolfs are bronze cored, took hours to clean as it had blown quite badly , found it about 5 years ago

Interestingly I often wondered why the slower technology of making separate molds and casting when the much faster technique of striking was available Then I tride making a Thurrock style die set and blanks of potin ( high tin bronze) the first blank struck effectively destroyed the dieface as the potin seemingly shattered ( like sticking a glass blob) I then realised that the only way to use potin as a coinage metal was to cast the coin !

I decided to email the seller of these fake Danewood halfcrowns to cancel the order, instead of risking the £100 purchase price on a risky return, to leave the negative feedback. He claims to have no idea what i am talking about, even although the 10+ halfcrowns he sold were all replicas from the same place. How on earth can he have 1500+ sales with no negative feedback whatsoever? I was going to report him to ebay via telephone. But is it really worth all the time and hassle trying to explain to someone who hasn't a clue about coins, that he has ripped off loads of buyers? The answer is NO because ebay could not care less, which has been said a thousand times on here. They do not want any bad publicity by getting Fraud squads involved with, which to them is a trivial matter, prosecuting, finding people guilty, then getting it all plastered over the media and showing Ebay for what it is. They don't even want you leaving negative feedback as its bad for business. I left negative feedback for a seller who sold me a dud, after a lenghthy case against him, only for it to be rescinded a day later. So really why bother. Ebay the judge and jury!! At the end of the day, your really using Ebay at your own peril. Some you win and some you lose. ?

I couldn't make it to the midland coin fair today but I did find this little beauty in my local shop, it's a bit of a weak strike and it does have a nasty die crack running through the obverse but it has lovely chocolate tones too it...........

Beyond BC? There are a number of objects around our house which fit the bill, but if we're talking coins I have a few Greek, Alexander the Great, Philip of Macedon etc. and also these: Dolphin money from the Black Sea area, 5th to 3rd century BC. They were cast on poles, attached in rows at the tail end (think sprouts in their natural state), then tapped off when cooled.

I found this really crude blender program but I think it shows enough to pretty much confirm that this 1826 is 6/0 Obviously not exactly identical different wears and such I just wanted to put an 0 and 6 together to get a read on how they looked and the 2 parts of the coin where the gaps appear are pretty much spot on. thoughts?

If you phone ebay to tell them why you are not paying rather than paying and returning them they will listen. You have done a fantastic job putting them on here and not worth the hastle of doing anymore. HAT OFF and move on.

The reverse is not so nice [Walter on LVN], but nevertheless it's always good to have an ex-Mass in ones collection

They were cast in strips in two piece clay moulds. They have a head on one side and charging bull on the other, and quality varies quite a lot. I have a lovely one that I found on a rally in Kent in the 90’s. Jerry

Sounds like Dalton & Hamer Warwickshire No. 329 (Stratford): Obv.: Bust to left; "SHAKESPEAR" Rev.: A man-of war sailing; "THE WOODEN WALLS OF OLD ENGLAND" Edge: PAYABLE IN LANCASTER LONDON OR LIVERPOOL Or it could be variety 329a if the edge is Plain (not in collar). The rarity of both are listed as "RRR" on a scale of Common, Scarce, R (rare), RR and RRR. Graham.

same 6 on the 1886 and they all look fake. Report the fraudster. that other guy made 7.5k on fake kew's. This is some serious wonga going missing from innocent folk. Surely there is some kind of fraud watch for crying out loud. It is clearly apparent to me now if it wasn't before Ebay is a scam site and should carry a 3/10 trustworthy rating. Might kick them in the backside to police the site. They quote all these subsection rules and conditions but don't do anything about it. I want to report ebay for soliciting criminal entity's to run rife through their site. Where do I go?

Throughly agree. We are a dying breed on here , us hammered fans that is. I posted a nice short cross a few days ago. I think 2 people liked it , poor turn out that but to be fair it was posted in the wrong place. We need a recent hammered acquisitions thread or something along similar lines ?
