The term "cameo" gets bandied around quite a lot without, as far as I know, an unambiguous description. It is certainly dangerous to draw conclusions from photographs as to whether a coin is cameo or not. It appears to me that the method of photography and lighting etc can make huge differences to the appearance of a coin. For example, I own 2 1948 proof pennies and the photographs that I took with my digital SLR, macro lens and built-in flash make them look like cameos and yet when I hold them in hand they are clearly not. Terry Eagleton sent me a 1953 proof penny which looks like a cameo in hand but my photographs of it do not ! I'm assuming that a true cameo appears to have a darkish background with a lighter "frosted" raised image ? My photo on left This the original Heritage photo which is more as it appears in hand. The basic message, as always, is to be wary of photographs and judge it in your hand wherever possible !

Turns out this little coin is a denier of Floris V, Count of Holland (1256-96) struck early in the reign, Voided long cross on the reverse, very rare. The type has been traced but as yet no specimens fit the legend, so work still in progress. Thanks to Peter Spencer the editor and compiler of ID & V Desk in the searcher.

Not really sure I would say IMPETUOUS, I probably could think of a few choicer words...

The reflected view will depend on the planarity of the die's field. Many dies are slightly domed to give a dished surface and so you will only see the image at the focal point. Getting a picture of yourself is therefore a bit hit and miss.

Strange, I have all but a few of them listed on BOTH sites..... Interestingly enough, there were 3 or 4 that they would NOT let me list on both sites yet identical items were already listed. All coins were set in the listings to post to GB, & Canada..... Please view on US site. (Ebay has me tearing out what little hair I gave left)(Now I know why I've had no interest on anything, even after paying for dual site listing) Will ship to known established forum members at discount or reasonable offer.....

This is going to rumble on and on ad infinitum. FWIW, my take is a pre-requisite of good frosting, but absolutely mirror-like fields to complement it - as below. The field is the most crucial component in my opinion.

Its a stunning coin whatever they want to call it.

The only true cameo penny that I was convinced of, was a picture of a rare proof 1961 penny. Unfortunately it sold for much more than I was prepared to pay for it.

Here is my original one from pic above and my other 1 both pics I took today 1 after the other. like against like kind of bolsters that argument. as one is more prooflike cameo than the other

There is another thread now on the subject, but I would say that I have definitely seen cameo contrast crowns of 1951 with mirror-black fields that I would not necessarily number amongst the "VIP". Or if they are, then the population of what some consider VIP will have to expand. I bought one labelled VIP from Spink many years ago that probably would be considered such. But, to belabour the point, I think many would feel comfortable about those that are NOT VIP, but the same could not be said for those considered by some to be VIP. There IMO is a spectrum of presentation and strike for this 1951 crown, with much the same to be said about the 1953. 5,000+ quid for one of these? Spare me! Although this may portend well for later proof coins....

You would know the difference immediately as the V.I.P proof is Frosted and the mirror surface is almost black like looking into an abyss. LCA VIP V my sad offering normal one

He does show it in his last pic, it looks as dubious as everything else in this ad, and of course is completely unattributable to the ‘coin’ in question. Jerry

If he has been told by a dealer at Charing Cross that it is a £1200 coin all day long, then they would offer him £800 for it without question - somewhat better than the £430 net he will receive from eBay after costs. Wonder why he doesn't sell it to them?

There were no initials on the second head, 1839-1863 though, so you may be looking for something that isn't there. (Fox Mulder wants to believe too!)

As we have seen in the news over recent months with all the can't touch me actors and film producers we live in a time of name and shame. Ebay are breaking the law they are breaking trade practice definitions they are certainly not holding to any ethics mandates. Known fraudsters are allowed to continue to ply their trade unhindered and worse than that ebay covers their scams with 100% feedback protection. Should ebay be brought before an ethics committee? too bloody right they should.! Should ebay be brought before the trades and commerce ombudsman too bloody right they should.! . The thing about staying silent the problem only compounds itself. Ebay have a high profile on British TV yet they have the practices of a bootsale outfit. They have had a good run and if they are not willing to protect the people that for the most part pay their wages then they must go. It will fire a shot across the bows of any similar organisations who think they can do the same. If Ebay can be taken down then anyone can. I feel that this action will restore the faith in online purchasing as a whole and kick this industries butt into line. But it needs a heavy player(s) to carry it off. Where do you start?
