thanks for the replies - disappointing, I'll have to cancel my order for a new Lamborghini now I however do have the 'bug', I've just purchased myself a metal detector and secured permission to detect on farm land close by. I look forward to posting some of my finds on this forum.

Yes B&C you are right. Remember the time you bought a UNC Mule, only to determine it was not a mule, and returned it? After that, the grading company tried to explain it away as a "partial" mule.......LOL.

I had the same issue Zooey. I sent in a F192A Penny (1922/27) with full documentation, and it came back a F192 Penny...and they lost my documentation! They graded it ok on grade (VF I think), but they took a $4,000 coin and turned it into a $50 coin!

I don't think they ignore it so much as take the approach that something about right is ok. To provide evidence for this statement, the one below was previously slabbed by NGC as a P1983. Obviously by adhering to Peck numbers only and ignoring all other references, they will always be fighting an uphill battle to get it right. But I think they can get away with it because they are targeting a segment of the market that is generally unquestioning.

A varied selection there Mick! Now I know where The Pioneers pinched the riff for Long Shot Kick De Bucket from... Anyway, back to relative normality for me

    It's a shilling not a sixpence.

Like I mentioned in the other thread, often an auctioneer will let a lot go to a room bidder who matches the maximum postal/commission bid - unethical in my view.

I don't think Eugenie would be best pleased if she knew a mate of mine was responsible for posting this Chris.

8 and a half million attended the South Bank exhibition alone; then add in several million more at events held around the UK, and you have a huge potential market for the crown as a keepsake. Also consider it was the first non-gold coin to feature the popular Pistrucci 'George & the Dragon' design for 50 years, and I wouldn't be at all surprised if the number sold at Festival events far exceeded the number applied for by post from the RM.

There's a myriad of 'varieties' of the new £1 coins, too many to be deliberate design changes. More likely many of them arise from issues concerning the striking of 12 sided coins. I'm just finishing an article for Coin News on my very modest study of the new coin, together with a summary of the genuine varieties and also those that have been deliberately 'manufactured' by the unscrupulous for sale on eBay.
