Until recently little is known that the author of Sherlock Holmes, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle is an avid coin collector. Reading some of the articles here http://fourthgarrideb.com/2014/10/05/holmework-assignment-arthur-conan-doyles-coin-collection/ it appears at one time ACD collected Anglo Saxon to Charles II but auction the lot in 1913 at Sotherby because he decide to devote exclusively to ancient Greek and Roman coins. His collection of ancients were eventually broken up and sold by Manfra in 1968. I suspect coins with tickets with ACD writings would command a premium. Here is a tray from a cabinet that belong to ACD

It's the creation of a market, just as the myriad listings of varieties for a given date creates the demand over and above simply ticking the date box. Sure FDC should mean FDC, but even with two nominally similar grade coins, everyone will have a preference for one over the other based on their perception of what is before them. Personally, I think the concept of giving or chasing micro-grading is irrelevant as it often takes preference over the contents and is entirely subjective on the opinions of the grader.

Maybe - I wouldn't be surprised if there are more varieties these days, though I expect a lot would be such small changes that you couldn't spot them with the naked eye as they don't hand make dies any more. They could probably easily reduce the profile by 10% without anyone noticing and strike a whole lot more coins.

Unfortunately that doesn't help you - it could be either.

I took apart an old disc drive, and got the curved neodymium magnet out. Sliding a coin down it at about 45˚ really shows up sterling silver from other alloys. Only pure copper comes close.
