Unfortunately I think the RM has caught the disease from the numerous other "numismatic collectable" con merchants out there. I was called to a local shop yesterday to help evaluate a coin collection someone had brought in. My heart sank as I spotted a box full of leatherette cases from a range of the usual suspects. The usual cons: "Gold" coins that are actually layered, "limited editions" of 10000+, "collectables" that are anything but. The unfortunate owner had paid out over £8000 over a number of years as, he thought, an investment. He had sent them to one of the posh auction houses in London (I don't know which one) in expectation of a profit - they had returned it - "not interested". Hence he had tried his mate in the antique shop and I had to break the bad news. There was some gold - the world's smallest gold coins collection - and some silver (Olympics ingots). The bulk was base metal with gold or silver plating and the hideous coloured enamels. I believe he would make less than a tenth of his investment back. I left with my blood boiling. Surely it is time some ombudsman got onto these racketeers?

Trying hard to find the positive - these coins are not aimed at the likes of us. If they prove the gateway drug for some other collectors who may then dip their toes further into numismatic waters, then all well and good. There's no way I would like to have any of those in my own collection, no matter how rare or valuable they may be.

Using an inflation calculator that £140 in 1969 would be £2190 today. The 1953 plastic sets you could probably get for the prices asked then, in absolute terms today. After inflation £14 in 1969 would be £219 !!! Late 60's coin boom. I suppose the other factor which pushed up prices was sheer availability. No internet then, which made collecting more difficult.

Well... I've been watching the Timeline Auctions through the live bidding this afternoon as I had a couple of bids placed on two coins. 1. Didn't win the Richard III penny (lot 1229). It opened at 200. My maximum bid was 400, and it closed at 460. Nevermind. 2. I initially placed a bid of 200 on a lovely Edward IV penny (Second reign, type XXI) from the Archbishop sharp collection (lot 1240). I was out bid at 220, but I placed a last minute sneaky internet bid at 240 (300 with premium) and won. I'm pleased with this result because of the provenance... Looking forward to some more bidding on Thurs/Friday! Here's the coin!

Apart, that is, I guess from the 1953 plastic set at £14 and the "de luxe" specimen set at £15 ! You'd be annoyed now if you paid that for those in 1969. Look what else cost a similar amount then and compare to values now!! 1743 VF shilling for me, I think! Did anyone really pay those sums for plastic sets in 1969 ?
