  1. If the buyer knows what they are looking at at all. I suspect many of these dodgy sellers get away with it most of the time because of the inexperience of the buyers.

  3. Two 1917 halfcrowns I have. The top one is a NGC MS 62 while the other is an ungraded coin I brought from Michael Coins before it closed when I was in London a few years ago. I think the ungraded example is a better coin than the NGC graded one and welcome any comments as I am trying to improve my grading skills. The top coin is the NGC MS 62 graded coin while the bottom coin is the ungraded coin brought from Michael Coins. Thanking you in advance for any replies

  6. Yes, the one on Richard's site as his example 9, also with a different date width to the usual F24's. Maybe we need to ask Bernie how many F24 die pairings!

  7. Actually, although the "letters" are in a different place from Obverse F (Freeman 4), they are about the same size and spacing.

  8. Yes, I'll vote for the second as well - the first looks to have the lustre "washed out" by dipping perhaps overzealously. This with the caveat that it is hard to picture slabbed coins. I have an absolutely gorgeous NGC64+ 1907 half crown and can not for the life of me get a decent picture in slab.

  9. As soon as they're seen they either get "collected" or ebayed, either way they ain't going back into circulation.

  10. I have been shown a few in hand by ardent young collectors. All so far have come through contacts at the local post offices. I spoke to the guy in my local PO and he confirmed they had received one bag of them. When I asked if he had any left he went a bit cagey - I suspect he took the lot himself and sold them on...

  13. I think it's just a byproduct of a quite appalling photograph. Double image, blur - if you're really interested ask the seller for a decent picture.

  14. Considering how much I'd had to drink before I wrote that, it came out remarkably comprehensible.
