Spink's 2018 catalogue has finally dropped the (non-existent, I think) 1845 star stop crowns.

Anybody else listen to Jamie T? I am surprised to find how infectious and memorable his stuff is. First bit I got into was "Salvador" after it was mentioned on some BBC4 documentary on musice. The video is mesmeric too:

And the sea does NOT cross the linear circle (unlike rev G) - very distinctive.

As I understand it, whenever there is an edge inscription, there is no reeding on British Crowns in this period. I have checked my own collection - the Jubilee headed Crowns and the Wreath Crowns have reeding as do the 1937, 1960 and 1965 in the pre-decimal era. The rest have edge inscriptions and no reeding, including the 1951 and 1953. BTW, have you got into the stop marks on the 1840s Crowns? The book says that both Cinquefoil and Star stops are possible on the 1844 and 1845 coins but I have never seen a Star stop 1845. (Some that claim to be, but always mis-identified.)

Hi interesting IM, it is known that the 'square cross' IM of PTS C was used also in D but started to break up ( one corner missing ) It wold appear that the punch developed further damage and almost half of the punch breaking away. I would surmise that this is one of the last dies to be made with that punch before it was replaced with the cross found for PTS E. Very interesting coin

Except, of course, that between being 'The Pink Floyd Sound' and 'Pink Floyd' there was 'The Pink Floyd'...:-)

The denarius (silver) was replaced by the antoninianus (various degrees of silver wash; valued at 2 denarii) and ultimately with the follis which was 100% bronze. The antoninianus was introduced by Caracalla so that is what it could well be.

Many were silver dipped as currency became worth less, so it's probably a good match to be honest
