I think logistically it’s an impossible job, especially at local auctions. The time it takes to wade through kilo after kilo of bulk lots makes it impractical for the auctioneers. I’ve tried it a couple of times and it’s not fun, so I totally believe they are, more often than not, virgin lots. Good things do lurk within them on occasions...Declan picked up a 1905 HC in a bulk lot as just one example.

I’ve only ever had one C1 crown that good, and I didn’t have it for long...they are serious chunks of silver, love them, as I do the C1 half crowns for exactly the same reason. Proper coins!

saw this on facebook, the florin had gone away for conservation and came back a cameo, do we know how that was achieved, was the cameo under there all the time ??

No, both best are in private hands as far as I am aware, as I have specifically excluded the unavailable (in museums). In my database I have noted the top 2 or 3 examples for each die pair in case I decide I need one. It doesn't exclude the possibility of a new coin appearing, but given the size of them, I feel anything decent would have been illustrated at some point.

The answer is "yes" and "no". If you have the time and patience, trawl through and look; if not, steer clear. It didn't happen often to me - I found a bulk lot with an EF 1865 penny in, but from the bidding it was obvious others had also seen it. I got it, but it wasn't a bargain in the end.

Hi Stu, I too love the coinage of Charles I, especially the Exeter mint coins. I once had a semi-decent Exeter sixpence but I had to sell it as my collection was becoming too eclectic for my tastes. It was a tough move but the hammered pennies won in the end! Still, if I was a rich man, I'd still love to own a couple of those stunning CRI crowns in the up and coming Davcoin auction!

Wow, that is an impressive result as the original is not all that spectacular. On a related note: I hope we can at some time get an idea of mintages. I am not sure that the TPG population reports are that accurate as there are many resubmissions on the hope that upgrades be achieved. Also, as I have said before, in the case of Wreath crowns that there are many that IMO are not actually proofs (another example would be the 1942-1946 issues wherein many are specimen and not proof).

I would have guessed something like a new die finish - I guess that's what craigy is getting at.

Rob, Thanks for that. It shows (as often) that we all have a lot to learn! I must message the guy and admit that I 'jumped the gun' somewhat, although the conversation did remain civil and I was just asking what numismatic reference gives details of this variety. It seem there is none. Frank

i'm sure i had some correspondence with the royal mint about this i noticed on a 20p and they said it was a new technique they were trying or something, also has some frosted proof like 5p's as well in my change. also the brilliant uncirculated coins are now coming out with a deep proof like appearance
