I remember the old penny falls and looking to see if there were any old ones ready to fall. I remember spotting an 1895 (when I was trying to complete a date set 1860-1967) and spending about 2/- before it finally fell. It's the only coin from my very early phase of collecting (I was about seven years old) that I still have. Also trying for an 1883 a couple of years later, running out of money, and getting it by putting a lolly stick into the slot. (Hope the statute of limitations has expired on that!)

Lucky! I think there was a news story about a boy getting a sovereign in change as a pound a year or two ago as well.

Rather ironic that the gentleman’s name is Richard Bird. One would have thought he’d be inclined to stay schtum.

I keep my collection in my gun safe. 😎

Totally agree. They are attempting to artificially contrive a collectors market, which doesn't truly match the collector's mindset. I think we are all about collecting from a population not constructed for collection, such as currency issues.

I was going to suggest Gornal instead of Tipton but I don't think anyone in Gornal can afford a car...

Yes I could keep both - but I already have a third 8+H in a lesser grade that I ought to move on! As to outlay, the new one cost me only £7 including commission, so I think I did OK either way.

You could keep both Paddy for the time being until a better specimen comes along. I don't collect pennies so I don't know your outlay

    It means Russian of course.

The F177 is the most common of the 1913 Ian and IMO often well struck ,should not be to hard to find a really nice one. Pete.

I got a 1912 Half Sovereign in change in place of a penny in about 2005 - but I guess that doesn't really count!

I received a 1942 florin in my change circa October 1989. That was literally the one and only time I ever received any pre 1947 coinage.

Chris Finch of DNW asked me to look at the 1882 no H penny at the MCF yesterday. There is no visible evidence of the ‘H’ under the loupe but I also felt it was a little ‘dished’ under the date. No recent shenanigans, but as it is one of those coins that has considerable surface patination it is quite possible that the ‘H’ might have been lost. Either that, or a filled die, as the obverse is clearly ‘wrong’ for the ‘no H’ as we recognise it, though I don’t know that can be entirely written in stone. My advice was that if they do try to sell it, an explanation of the reservations about its authenticity would have to be included in the description, then the punters can make up theit own minds. Not one for me. The links can be found above. Jerry

Him thinking a Shakespeare quote is a 'slogan' is amusing, and, of course, it's 'glisters'.......as any fule kno. Anyone fancy a pint in the Pedantic Bastard later on?

Mother nature my arse and, even if it were so, still a £1.50 value coin.

Thank you very much. That's overly kind. Nobody think you are not intelligent. You generally say something very perceptive whenever you start off a comment with "I don't know anything but ..." My memory is obviously bad for things I do in the evenings when I am tired. Hence I do forget I have said something before and end up repeating it without noticing. Very sorry for the irritation caused. Enjoy the sunny Sunday. Sword

Take it easy and i am really sorry about the language if i offended you , my problem is that i stuggle to write things down and am what may be called thick and of low intelligence. I wasnt at school from being thirteen and did not have much education before ,so my posts may appear childish or daft as i find it hard to put words into writing and obviously cant spell. I dont know what slavish means that you described me as being but if its bad then you were probably right . I dont and cant make excuses for my stupid posts but feel maybe you would see a different Pete should you ever meet me or speak to me on the phone ,.if you could understand me 😊 I wont start going on again and have said or atleast tried to say what i thought at the time. Keep smiling. Pete.
