There is a specimen in the British Museum and this is from its website. "These medals were to serve as presents for the followers of the Duke of Alva at his meeting with Charles IX and Catherine at Bayonne in June". I guess the quality of medals in the 16th century can be surprising high. https://www.britishmuseum.org/research/collection_online/collection_object_details.aspx?assetId=1613269679&objectId=943268&partId=1 I do wonder if the gold plating on that "vermeil" medal is official or if it was done in a later date.

There is a book by Davis & Waters, published in 1922 Tickets and Passes of Great Britain and Ireland (Struck Or Engraved on Metal, Ivory, Etc. for Use at Theatres, Public Gardens, Shows, Exhibitions, Clubs, Societies, Schools and Colleges; Also Truck Tickets, Colliery Checks, Railway Passes, Gambling, Lottery and Racing Tickets, Etc) However should you be able to find a copy, it will cost you both arms, a leg and your first born. Last one I saw was around £475. Try your County Library.

Sorry Newark whoever that is, but... Santa Claus 😂 https://rover.ebay.com/rover/0/0/0?mpre=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.ebay.co.uk%2Fulk%2Fitm%2F123839413231 Or maybe this is groundbreaking, wonderful discovery on a par with the pre-Neolithic cave paintings taking us back to our ancient past.
