Very pleased to obtain one of the last pieces of the jigsaw in the Victorian copper penny series I've been collecting for the last year. It's an 1843 DFF Bramah 3b type, in perhaps near VF. Private buy agreed with Ian a day or two ago, and just received today. Despite a careful lookout and a daily dedicated search of e bay 1843's since last April, I haven't previously seen one. Nor any at auction. Over the last 17 years, 4 have been sold at LCA, in 2013, 2014, 2016 and 2018, but they were all of very low grade, sub fine. This specific variety is a rarity within a rarity, as 1843 is scarce to begin with. If I'd spurned this opportunity I might have been waiting a long time for another. So many thanks to Ian.

Did anyone else spot the great rarity amongst that little lot? Yes, a 1953 farthing with major error on reverse, a ‘wobin’ instead of a wren. Awful watching.

Chatting to a friend in the town center parking lot recently, and we both said how much we disliked so many Americanisms creeping in. Not to mention how badly some of the automobiles were parked. We were having a good chat, but then a call came in on my cellphone so had to stop.

Looking through the folder for this set, I've noticed that, for the John Logie Baird 50p, they write "From an early age he showed ingenuity, setting up a telephone exchange to connect his bedroom to his friend's houses." So, either his friend did have more than one house or they should have written "to his friends' houses." Perhaps this is the error in question ? I will continue looking.

The vendor has sent me some new pictures but they are still a little ambiguous (in my opinion) regarding whether the lustre has been previously enhanced, and so he's going to get it checked by a local coin person who will advise him on condition.

Never saw the Who but, same time frame, Stones (Mick Taylor era) at the Liverpool Empire '71 was pretty special. Check out the Marquee film from the same tour and the '72 US films for a taste. Then there was Ziggy's farewell tour in '73, and me touching his bare foot. With this hand, yes, this one here. Didn't cure anything, unfortunately......

Fortunately, I already have an 1869 sixpence (Die #12, trivial scuffing, lightly toned on obverse) which I bought in the Willis sale at Glendinnings in 1991. So, Eric, go for it.

You will be fighting me for a few of them. 😘 I have identified 11 coins in the March sale that are of interest to me and four that are 'must haves'.

I agree with you. It is indeed a superb set, and the coppers do catch my eyes, too. For this set, it is worth grading, and 200 pounds is bit low for this set. However, for the price the seller asks… it is crazy high.

Wow, who pays those prices? Maybe if it is stuck up there for that amount they take counteroffers? Yikes. those are decent enough coins worthy IMO of a premium but not of that magnitude. Perhaps a bit more than 200 pounds... I did pay a premium for the coppers by themselves: Proof 67* Cameo farthing, Proof67 Ultra-cameo 1/2d, Proof 67Ultra-cameo 1d These are absolutely superb coins that quality wise would certainly match VIP coins, although the penny is not of the "special" type.

Do you mean you were conversating?

A more obscure one that I see regularly wrong in print is the difference between "loth" and "loathe". Loth is unwilling, loathe is to hate but I have often seen "I am loathe to take that course...", even in books and respectable publications.

I'm going to investigate pro cameras and microphones for zoom type stuff.....none of the nonsense you usually get!

They are from Liecester, i wonder if that is near Leicester? Anyway, asking a crazy price as you said.

My wife, a Cambridge Phd, teaches Classics. I think it best I don't show her this thread. 'Don't get me started' doesn't come close.

I believe the bids are automatically cancelled as the item is pulled so it gives the impression (wrongly) that no bids where placed

I am trying to see, but these old eyes can't see a lot....I wasn't too keen about the initial SNC offering but the shilling has more differences (I can not find that one at the moment).

For me at least, its all about finding them in your change. The excitement to me as kid, in NZ, was finding pennies from New Zealand, Australia, Great Britain and occasionally South Africa in my change and I would always spend my pocket money in such a way, as to get as many coins in change as possible , in order to fill any gaps. Until a few years ago I used to to do the same here (in the UK).

Even an error in the packaging can only make the set more interesting and there is no reason to return it.

This is a really unhelpful post during an active auction when I and possibly other forum members are already bidding and watching. By tradition we do not post in a way that can affect others interests in ongoing auctions and I am most disappointed. We normally save comment until the auction is completed, and due time given for the lot to have been posted, other than in the ‘worst offerings’ scenario. Jerry

It means you offer it to me first, and in the unlikely event I'd refuse, at least I'd be head of the queue!
