Browsing the internet the other evening. Came across a site called Fanbety Store. Revisited this evening and spotted a familiar 1861 half penny 7 + D, available to buy now, at a discounted price. The title and photos seem to have been lifted directly from the eBay listing through which I purchased it back in August last year. I've alerted Winter Coins, the original seller and felt that a warning would be useful here too.

Thanks everyone! I’d never have guessed that as a solution! It’s incredible how even the discolouration is - I truly thought it was gold based upon the look, but yes was the packaging that made me assume otherwise. Yes, it was this gran and grandad who hoarded all the pre-dec coins for me that I first got several years ago that got me into collecting!

The Royal Mint (thankfully) didn't gold plate coins in those days. The gold and silver versions was issued in capsules in fitted cases. Nice to get a coin that has been kept for you for over 30 years!

Not a lot of people know that.............

I have seen this many times before - the plastic used for the packaging on these early £5 coins discoloured very easily and more end up looking gold than not. If you break it out of the package you will find it is still white metal inside. Same happens with many of the early Isle of Man Crowns.

Or has the plastic aged over time to a gold colour? That is the normal packaging for a Cu-Ni crown.

True, but not nearly as nice as the 1834 halfcrown design though. The Alexander Graham Bell two pound looks quite good.

It would be extremely difficult, as the coin has it all. No blemishes save for the merest isolated speck on the obverse, much eye appeal, and UNC. A truly choice piece which I was happy to pay the high price for. Copper is right that the date is much harder to find in high grade than you would imagine for a date which is not desperately scarce.

Very pleased, nay delighted with this absolutely immaculate 1825 in toned a/UNC.
