Worn? clear date only, dear boy, clear date only. Anyway, I thought I would make a few points about the 1806 no incuse curl pennies. Peck was of the opinion that they are roughly in a 1:5 ratio as opposed to incuse curl examples. But I'm inclined to think it's more like 1:10 in view of the difficulty I've encountered obtaining one. Not especially easy getting a mid grade specimen, but the higher grades are difficult. Finally got this one from a dealer, and noticed it had previously sold at the June 2021 LCA for just £70. He made a fair mark up on it, as you would quite reasonably expect, but it is one of the better ones I've seen, being toned GEF with no issues.

I agree my friend, hence the challenge! I personally love this period in history, and I expect the origin was being in Stuart house at school no doubt. I read daily excerpts from Pepys diary, plus one of my ancestors fought in the civil war, so it's no surprise that I ended up focussing on collecting Charles II coins. It would have been Cromwell coinage, but yeah right! I'm not made of money 🤣 All the best, Weaver (Wayne)

Interesting. I hadn't even noticed it Cliff, to be honest. Obviously some kind of metal flaw peculiar to the variety, but not on the example I upgraded from. Also just had a look at the no incuse curls sold by LCA and none of them have it either (although no pics for the ones before September 2008).

I notice B fault in BRITANNIAR but not in all No Incuse curl examples?

House? Luxury. We had to fight our dad for one corner of a cardboard box before we went to work 25 hours a day draining the lake using sieves. Try telling that to young people nowadays and they just don't believe you.

    Looks very interesting. Has anyone read it? Publisher ‏ : ‎ Royal Numismatic Society (1 Sept. 2020) Language ‏ : ‎ English Hardcover ‏ : ‎ 1870 pages £150(ish)

Quite. But Churchill crowns would have considerable potential if a proof was issued in silver with a mintage of less than 50,000. I personally think the portrait is OK if it wasn't for the tasteless and in your face CHURCHILL legend. It would be nice if the Royal Mint would consider making a better attempt instead of making more coins on rabbits, diasaours and Gruffaloes.

Dr Larry referred to it a few times in his threads. Wyon had a furnace at home in his workshop to harden dies it seems. Does sound a fascinating read.

Didn't realise it existed. Looks a great buy. Probably be all manner of interesting snippets in there.

It's mentioned in that fascinating BNJ article on early bun pennies we were linked to recently. There are mentions of the work he did at home (he had the equipment apparently) and then took into the RM . Though this is only a small bit of the diary which apparently is mostly domestic.
