I sometimes wonder whether, if I won the lottery and bought a big pile of rarities at an auction, which lets face it, is rather easy to do, I would get half the pleasure that I get from finding a worn rarity at the bottom of an old tin of crap like has happened on occasion...... ...and I can show off the found gem on here, instead of just hiding a pile of expensive bronze in a bank vault where no-one can see them.....

The letter underneath looks to be the original R which has partly filled, and has then been over punched on the die with another R . The ones with a different letter are all very sought after, or with the same letter rotated and over punched , but not really with the same letter re punched more or less in the same position.

These repairs were very common in the early 1860's.

I agree, but my own patience to have a collection is short! can't wait forever.

Problem is, those "occasions" can be very rare.

I would have bought them all too Richard, if I had a spare half million. 🤑 It almost felt like it's a different hobby today, watching top predators at the kill. Afraid I will have to continue scratching around looking for bargains elsewhere... ...which can of course still be fun though. Congrats to Bernie, but clearly not the end of his collecting as I see he's seeking a swap on his one unsold coin, the F32! 🤔
