This is the 1885 penny that you really want. I could kick myself for missing out on this a few years ago.

Just reached Alotau, PNG on a cruise from Brisbane. Very hot and humid. Back in Brisbane 5/12.

Thanks, just looked at your rarest pennies listing. Once again, I feel we're all indebted to your perseverance assembling these sites. Especially those of us newer to collecting these, and with not much free time to do a fraction of the exhaustive research accumulated therein.

My reply to CC, will they take any notice? “Thank you for replying Tim, though I find the decision to continue with the sale of the Chinese Replica baffling, as do many others online - it’s a hot topic on one of the major on-line fora. You probably also need to review the ‘mintage’ figure you quote, as they are still being produced in China and available online for about £3. If it is purchased by a less aware client, they may not be happy when they notice the letter R punched on both sides and it does not enhance CC’s reputation. On the other hand, if it does sell would you sell a couple of dozen for me ? Regards, Jerry”

Just a nice coin, I think. Although not that much better than my own specimen bought for £35 in 1999.

The majority of the most expensive coins in last week's Workman sale of pennies went to a single bidder - it will be interesting to see whether they turn up on Atlas' site.

I think the “coin” may have been pulled, as the link now reads ‘lot not found’. Jerry

I completely agree with you and feel they have done much to destroy the collector market and turn lovely Brit coins into “flippables” in the worst USA style. And lest there be protests I will stand on that assessment; I have seen vigorous defense of such marketing strategy - if you want to put it politely. Pointedly if and when the day comes will steer my collection away from such.

Two or more bidders must have really liked it and wouldn't let go. Not so nice as the Great Collections example - I upgraded 1884, 1885, and 1890 last week. They were all around the same price, average £31 + commission + really low shipping (all the similar condition) 1885 is below "New" and "Old"

like the coin dealer David Seaman used to be goalkeeper for England?

I've just read the name properly and realised that it's not the strongman, Geoff Capes, who passed last week. Thought they were getting shot of his coins rather quickly.

I gave up reporting clear fakes several years ago. Total waste of my time. They ignored every single one.
