  1. A reference to the 'Great' Reform bill becoming law at about that time? I don't know.
  2. There is actually a Doctor of coins in Switzerland. He did some special PhD and his thesis was no doubt on something coin related. He's the only Dr of coins as far as I know, and I wasn't aware of any Professors.
  3. Gadget, do you have a permenant address, if so what is it (email it to me)? Someone from the forum has paid for you to receive a copy of Collectors' Coins GB 2006 in an attempt to reform you!
  4. 1. The hole could have been added later. 2. ROMA is the latin word for Rome 3. There wasn't a Queen, that's the Emperor. Some professor of coins you must be! The tell tale signs are usually always the style and the quality. The coin in the image lacks both.
  5. They don't want them! They have plenty of history in their own coins. It was on TV!
  6. I don't know, i'm willing to listen to see if gadget has something sensible to say. Perhaps he/she isn't all that bad. Probably just does it for attention and can really speak/write very well. He/she may even grow up to be Conservative MP for Statford upon Avon or something. 50 years ago many people would have thought and said the same thing about black people or gays, or jews. And since then, those bigotted views have proved unfounded. Surely everyone has a right to live in society (unless they steal anything of mine!!) Chavs have rights too you know, and perhaps a chav with an inquizitive mind is not such a bad thing, maybe he was just brought up wrong.
  7. Was that you that made me pay silly money for that blurry piece of *&?! You know, if buyers actually got together and came to some agreement to stop them outbidding each other, we'd all get things far cheaper! At the moment there are a few people that I talk to about certain coins that appear on ebay, and we have agreed to discuss what we want and to leave the way clear. Perhaps you could join the co-operative: cp@predecimal.com
  8. Late last night (in Germany) there was a program on about coin clipping in 16th Century England! It showed lots of Royal Mint machinery striking coins nowadays etc, and there was also an interview with moneyer Dave Greenhalgh, who is a member of this forum somewhere, but has never posted! And it talked about how the edges were milled and lettering was added to beat the clipper. It showed a man with a single machine striking £5 gold proofs. They are hit 4 times by the die and the head side is face down. It was dubbed in German, but I expect it was some kind of documentary shown in the UK first.
  9. Isn't it sheeps intestines with some kind of meat inside. As an Englander, I have no idea. Out of the 27 years of my life, I've only been north of the border for about 3 hours of it.
  10. Dominus Noster (our Lord) is the DN. SISC is for Siscia mint (In Greece I think). Just because you can't find a picture probably isn't anything remarkable. They minted the same types at different mints usually.
  11. Yes, and now you can buy my book: http://www.predecimal.com/books/bookshop.htm
  12. Late Roman, looks like Constantinian Dynasty, could possibly be Valentinian. It was minted in Constantinople from the CON on the reverse (modern Ankara). You need to identify the lettering around the head to tell you what Emperor it is, so that you can date it.
  13. I've warned the seller.
  14. That's the one! I think Livre is the French?! Whatever, it means 'pound'. I think it would be fun if the royal mint reintroduced some of the old names for denominations....Like calling the 5p a shilling, the 10p a florin and the 20p a double florin for example. Accompanied of course with the numerical value in pence so as not to confuse people.
  15. It's from the Roman Denarius. 12 Denarii made a Sestertius, and 20 of those made a Livre (spelling?). That's where the £SD comes from (the pound sign being much like an L)
  16. It doesn't matter at all, because you've basically paid just a fraction over bullion value for it, and it would be easy to re-sell at that value. I suspect the scratches are on the plastic though.
  17. But that simply wouldn't be fair, because then we'd have to leave the gay ones too for any gay forum members. They simply all must go, it's not the right place for that kind of thing.
  18. I just wrote that in another area before I saw this!
  19. Articulately put as ever Gadget. Post a picture of your coin, and I'm sure someone can tell you more about it. A picture is worth 1000 words so they say.....Probably a few more in your case
  20. I've just removed a long gay porno post with links to a gay website. Syl, if you spot these before I do, can you make a note of the IP address (which appears in the left pane at the bottom of the post) and let me know it before deleting the message. The last (85.21.86.202) originated in Russia, so I wrote an email to the Russian ISP complaining that this forum is frequented by youngsters and that the user on that IP had posted very inappropriate pornographic info. I got a confirmation email in English and Russian straight after. I'll block all people using that particular Russian ISP.
  21. You can spend UK coinage in the channel islands, and I would imagine the Isle of Man too. Because it's usually the same size and type, most people aren't usually bothered on the mainland. Some shop keepers may not accept them, but banks certainly will as it's also sterling.
  22. Don't appologise, Hitler was an evil man and everyone has a right to life no matter what colour or social background they have. But sometimes, I also can't help thinking about how Europe would be now had the other side won. It's probably unrealistic to imagine an idilic Europe without crime or chavs, but it's certainly interesting to imagine exactly how it would be now, 60 years after Germany won the war. No doubt everyone would be encouraged to learn German at school more than they are now, and perhaps some countries/areas might have forgotten their original languages by now. Incidentally, they still have compulsory military service in Germany. You either do a years work for the community (cleaning up after old people etc) or around about the age of 19 you have no choice but to spend a year in the army. It's only for young men, and most of them try to get out of it by doing meals on wheels or by saying they're caring for a sick relative! Of those that do go in, many stay on to become long term soldiers, as the pay is good, and there aren't a lot of jobs around (especially in the East). If that makes them more rounded individuals, I couldn't possibly say. There are plenty of Kartoffelfressers on day time TV here (The German Chav equivalent)
  23. You've gone and made yourself look really stupid now haven't you. Some people never learn. New age Gypsies are a quite different group of people in my book too.
  24. When you make a post you see the 'File attachements' under the bit you type in? That's where you select the picture from your harddrive via the browse button. Make sure images are not too large in kb and dimensions because it uses up my bandwidth when people view them. Although I have another deal now with my hosts, so I'm more relaxed about images!
  25. Thanks Syl. I don't know how they managed to change my password, but perhaps it was done so that they could post such links unhindered. I'm pleased you were around to take them down.
