That's very honest of you, but it just goes to show what no doubt does happen to people on ebay when they buy from someone that didn't do proper research in the first place! Knowledge is very important with these things.

Yes, it's a fake shilling that has lost it's silver plate. It would have looked much like the one on this page: http://www.predecimal.com/forged/georgeiii.htm (see also the other coins, one of which is brassy) Had it been in better shape it would have been collectable, but I'm afraid it's quite sorry looking, and of very low value.

For US coins have a look at www.pcgs.com or www.coinpeople.com

And what's on the reverse? A large shield and garter I suspect. You'll find that's a brass fake shilling that was once silver plated. Fake 1816-1820 shillings are far more common than fake sovereigns because not many people would have been fooled by an underweight sovereign. And the legend is wrong for a sovereign too, I should have spotted that sooner.

That certainly looks like a fake to me, the colour is inconsistant and not at all right for gold. I have a little collection of fakes, so would offer £10 for the pair.

Certainly sounds Greek, or probably more likely Roman-Greek, i.e. when the Romans had control of Greece. I have a couple of copper coins with Roman emperors on one side and a phoenix on the other. Millimoo (a member here) has a few too, but I think we'd need a picture to check.

Probably be a million times more helpful if you could just mention the diameter in mm, and the metal type!

It's an alloy of Copper and Nickel and possibly tiny amounts of other metals. I'm not sure off the top of my head about the ratios. They certainly don't contain lead though, that would probably not meet health and safety standards!

Hello Louise, Yes, Unknown (I prefer to call him Juan) is correct. It's a bullion coin, certainly after being in a mount and used as jewellery (even if it's hardly been worn, the mount will leave tell tale marks on the coin meaning that collectors won't be too interested unfortunately). You are welcome to arrange either over PM or email to send me the coin and I'd be pleased to weight it and the mount and offer the current bullion value.

And verdigris on gold is unheard of too. Perhaps these are brass. We need pictures.

I probably wouldn't be afraid to say AVF. The pic looks like 256 colour. Certainly something I'd offer 60% of however much I price it at.

Because I put it there... Some browsers support a 'favourites' icon, and if you don't have a small file on your webspace to be used as an icon it gives lots of missing file errors in your web statistics (if you have good statistics). So I knocked up a little pound sign to prevent the errors.

I agree to this idea what do you think chris I think the majority or eBayers are generally mean well, so why waste reams of space telling people how good everyone is. The bad apples should be pointed out, but in a sensible non slanderous manner.

I have a copy here, and I can safely say that it is the most bizarre book I ever set eyes on. Basically it's a transcript of a conversation with a group of people, one of which was posessed by At-Hlan, who originally lived in the City of Altanta (i believe). At-Hlan answers all the questions the people put to him about life death, aliens and the universe, and even suggests that the book be created to spread his word. At-Hlan and some of his austral friends seem to be able to wander from galaxy to galaxy in a different dimension, and he explians a little about what is out there! When i bought Rotographic this title was not mentioned, but I did try to get 'everything ever done' to be signed over to me on the contract, so yes, it probably does belong to me, but I'd need to find the author before I could plan any kind of reprint. It's so barmey, that with the right promotion it could probably be a best seller!

Hello Shelly, The first coin is a threepence, which will not be of any value unless in perfect, or very near perfect condition. The second coin is from Nova Scotia, which is a Canadian province. Literally Latin for 'New Scotland'. Those are pretty common too, so not of much worth unless well above average.

I suppose it's down to me to make sure I'm as informed as I need to be. The main thing, as a coin dealer with a reputation to keep I really can't afford to get involved with areas I know little about. Or at least I shouldn't try to sell coins about which i know nothing about. For example, I once bought a large amount of coins from a woman who's dead dad used to be a coin dealer. I was pushed for time and I went through what she had quite briefly and paid her some money and left. I got the coins back home and among them was an ancient Greek coin, an expensive one at that if it were real, but I wasn't sure, so I didn't try to sell it, just locked it away in a box. On my next visit to the UK I thought i'd see if I could arrange to see here again, as there were things I remembered and probably could have looked at more thoroughly. I went back, bought mostly scrap silver and left overs. Among the left overs was an ancient Greek coin, exactly the same shape, weigh, die alignment, size etc as the one I got on the first visit! Impossible to get 2 absolutely identical ancient Greek coins....... Both fakes of course. So, in short, I simply don't sell what I don't know.

That bloke Robert Mathews is a strange fellow. He asked me if I wanted to cross-link, and we did for a short while. I saw his conterfeit newsletter thing and thought it was quite good. I asked if I could publish it on predecimal.com giving him full credit with lots of links etc. I knocked up a version of the newsletter on my webspace to show him how it would look (I also pointed out that the HTML coding was rubbish and too slow for dial-up). He went spare and asked me to remove it immediately, and basically said it was very underhand etc etc (?). So I removed it of course (even though no one would ever have seen it except him because I pointed him at it). I really don't think he understood that publishing it on predecimal would have generated loads of visitors for him. He removed my link right away and never spoke to me again (even though I asked a few months later about a coin I wanted him to look at....he ignored me). You have to work together if you have related websites...Andy Bruce and I know about that, and because of it, we both prosper. Strange. (I kept his link on my links page though, as he provides a service my visitors may find useful)

Yes, I've thought about that before. It would be a lot of work and would probably require me to list most of the items for sale before it took off. And it would require a lot of promotion, not to mention a lot of help from you regulars in offering things for sale to get people going. I like the idea of a coin auction site which is gauranteed free of crap listings. First things first though, i've got someone redesigning the shop area at the moment, and I hope to have buy now links on all coins too.

No, I wouldn't think they'd be too fussed. Why don't you make notes, learn the definitions yourself and then simply put them in your own words. No one can ever have a problem with that.
