Chris...any explanation for the existence of a 1927 halfpenny struck shilling size with a milled edge? Sorry, I completely missed your question Coppers. I heard once that the mint workers back then used to sometimes muck around just for the fun of it, the milled edge half penny that's shilling size but bronze could be as a result of that. It is also possible (although unlikely because it is definitely small) that it could have been a normal halfpenny that had a milled edge rolled onto it by a machine in later life.

Gouby is the best identification guide for pennies I'll be meeting Mr Gouby at the London coin fair, and he'll be bringing me one of his books. -
1897 High and Low tide.
Chris Perkins replied to Half Penny Jon's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
Yes, Custard is probably right, I had it in my head it was a Halfpenny, HPJ. But the sea on the ebay coin is just like the picture of 3961 (on the left on p440) Anyway 1897 is agood year, so I bought it now -
That's strange....Unless the websitesite master JMD has hotlinked the image from (http://www.probertencyclopaedia.com) has blocked it being visible from outside their domain (perhaps I still have it in cache). What you'll have to do Master Jmd, is save the image to your PC locally, and then browse your PC to find it when selecting avatar. It'll then be uploaded to my webspace and you won't be stealing bandwidth from the source, it'll be coming from me (oh joy)

What mobile phone does everyone have?
Chris Perkins replied to Half Penny Jon's topic in Nothing whatsoever to do with coins area!
My friend Neil works at the coke factory in Sidcup, he had to help keep the droves of press out that wanted to report on the selling of Sidcup tap water! -
I had a ebay cheque for £15 something bounce the other day, and he hasn't replied to the email I sent yet. Would it be quicker to have the buyer cancel that cheque and send another one?

I can see your current avatar Jmd.

The legend is in latin, which means it could be from pretty much any European country (or even world country).

Chris Perkins replied to Half Penny Jon's topic in Nothing whatsoever to do with coins area!
Mobile phones in the late 80's/early 90's when I was at school were huge and I think you had to be 18 to own one (and only the well off could afford them anyway). So no school children had mobile phones back then. I must admit it distresses me slightly that nearly every secondary school child has a mobile phone these days, it must be hard for the teachers if there are potentially 25 kids in front of them all with mobiles! They surely must interupt things, even if they are switched on silent, I'm sure the kids must play around with them. -
Looks like one for Geoff! Those look like German moustaches to me, but that was very much the style of the time I suppose. (Many police officers here in Germany, still have moustaches resembling those! )

Yeah, I've got 2 8210's One with a UK SIM in, and one with a German SIM. I don't care much for games, photos and god know what else. It rings when people call me, and alows me to ring others! I do like the size of it though. -
Yes, good point! Looks like he/she has registered now, so I'm sure we'll find out.

Sorry, the pics didn't work, you have to be registered to post HTML links, or you could just type it out for us to cut and paste.

It's a funny subject Geoff, I think i read in Coin News that it technically was illegal to have them, no matter how old.

Just 2 or 3 pounds if in mint condition, and £1 if it isn't. -
1912 3 pence
Chris Perkins replied to John Byrne's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
That's about £20, so for that price it would have to be absolutely perfect. A nice Maundy example might raise that much. If it isn't perfect, yes, it's a rip off! -
I wish I knew! There must be books about them, or perhaps even a website. I think the problem is that many people regard fakes as less important than the real thing (when numismatically they are just as important as the real thing in my opinion). Strictly speaking, they are still illegal to own (although you would probably never get prosecuted unless you were trying to sell them as original) so it's something that perhaps people are a little afraid of confessing to! I had one chap email me once who had collected over 30 different fake modern £1 coins out of circulation. When I asked if I could write something about them on the website, he declined, didn't give his name and I never heard from him again. Perhaps someone else will know.... Are there any books or websites specifically on fake British coins, particularly those of Geroge III?

How much is this Sovereign worth?
Chris Perkins replied to Vitamin's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
Yes, I had a VF British 1915 Half Crown once (maybe even VF was pushing it, it was perhaps even AVF). It was slabbed and graded by I can't remember who, but it was one of the big companies, as AU55! It had loads of wear on both sides. I'm sure they look at them through powerful magnifiers etc, and I'm sure they mean well, but at the end of the day, they too are human. I had to break the coin out. And a respected human coin dealer who specialises in the coin you are showing him, would probably let you know what grade he thinks it is for free. -
You're welcome. And I meant the glamour model Jordan! AKA Katie Price. (Dare I say it; The only thing she has in common with coin collectors, is that she too likes to show people her thropenny bits!)

Mmmm, that would be controversial Geoff, I don't know how you come up with these ideas.

How can I get a rough price idea for this set?

Well it's up to Vitamin what he/she wants to do with the Kruggerand set. -

I don't know about Mr Cooke, but the only time I sell foreign stuff is either on commision basis, or when I end up with a few foreign bits after purchasing a collection. I would imagine, like me, Colin probably concentrates on British stuff, so may not want to purchase the set outright. I don't know. -
Yes, just imagine. 'Charing Cross, we have a problem'! Or, 'Are you receiving us Victoria'!!! Sorry HPJ.
