Erm, well thanks for doing that! I did have some guidelines once, but most of it is common sense isn't it, and I just delete offensive things when and if they appear. And they rarely do, because IP addresses are registered and email addresses are verified. I don't mind swearing when it is in it's place for expressive purposes, but will not tolerate the very bad swear words, the type that can bring hardened criminals to tears! (like, Poo and perhaps bum... You know the ones!) The rest is about right though, but perhaps you could have a word with the owner of this webspace and the creator of this forum (that's me) before you make any more of your own unofficial rules. Like your enthusiasm though!

Well, the pictures were good enough, it was sold in good faith at a fair auction, so the market says it was worth £110.00 (what it sold for). Personally I would try to avoid it, but I expect I'd be interested at £40 or a bit more. But please bear in mind that is a dealer opinion and not a collector.

Yes, but less than the ones that aren't dipped. It all depends on the individual coin. Personally I try to avoid putting dipped coins on the website, unless they are scarcer or I maybe purchased them in a collection. I always ask less than I would normally ask if they were naturally toned. Unfortunately here in Germany dipped coins are common. German collectors seem to put an emphasis on appearance, and not originality, which is what it should be about.

Normally, from the un-natural tone, often too bright, or with purples like that penny. Sometimes too orange. You just get the feel for a dipped coin. Harder to tell than a polished coin because with polishing you get hairlines.

So it's a very worn bun penny. You may be able to make out what bust it is and narrow it down further, but assuming of course the the obv is just as worn then you'll probably find it impossible.

I'd say it isn't a proof, I've seen them toned like that before, usually after being dipped. And double striking on close examination is common with those. Also the fields really don't look smooth enough to be a proof. I'd say it a high grade dipped coin that has re toned, and be very confident in that.

I suppose it has something to do with style, and the fact that us, as 'eccentric' coin collecting types, find it very difficult to like anything new. It's the Romantic in us all!

Frankly, Westminster collection are a business, not a coin dealer by any stretch of the imagination. I can't stand new issues, the kind issued just to make profit, and I can't stand the way people like 'Westminster Collection' (who are not based anywhere near Westminster) market such products to the unsuspecting public. Boycott Westminster collection, and buy some real coins that will actually rise in value in less than 100 years!

No I wouldn't have thought it was a fake, it probably ended up toned either because of handling or being stored in the wrong conditions. It is unusual for gold to tone but not impossible with modern proofs. I had a 1988 Proof gold set the other month, and one of the coins in that was slightly toned in a similar way. If any one knows the reason why proof gold can tone, when gold is pretty inert, I'd like to know too.

Well good question. I once got 5 Wreath Crowns and a whole load of other quality stuff for £70.00 A large quantity of early milled, lots of BU modern, few bit of Roman, lots of quality Victorian and later for £350.00 I've already tripled my money on that lot and am still selling some of it! I was once offered a shoe box of cigarette cards for £2.00 and was able to get £70 for them! There have been others too, but some of them I'd rather keep under wraps at the moment ;-)

Sometimes proof gold coins do tone, probably with a little help from the finger print. Personally I'd reject it, if it is not as described. There is no way any one would pay £175 for it like that, in fact I feel £100 was steep. Modern proofs should be absolutely perfect.

There are a lot of fat men in the West, lots of sausage and lederhosen everywhere, but generally in the East people are much trimmer. They eat better now than they did before the wall came down, of course, but most of them have retained their figures. That goes for the ladies too ;-) At least they'd have somewhere all of their own to put their towels!

Yes, every serious world coin collector/dealer should have a couple (1801 - 1900 & 1901 - now), they are a bit expensive, but as far as I know they are the only decent world coin guide in English. The postage is not cheap either, they are like double phone book size! You can sometimes get better prices, I got mine at less than the RRP from Amazon.de, but of course that wouldn't be possible in the UK. I can also get them from Token publishing with a 25% discount, but the postage really eats that up.

As yes, you're one of those American type chaps aren't you. Very nice to meet you. I didn't know that Sylvester had recommended you, but it doesn't surprise me, he's a good chap and that's the kind of example we need set to all the youngsters isn't it. Well done Sylvester!
