BBC 3CR Broadcast ideas please
Chris Perkins replied to Chris Perkins's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
Thanks, actually those silver pennies/twopences are not from where it has worn off. You can quite easily remove the copper plating chemically Same goes for the 'copper' euro coins.... I've done it here, but would not consider selling them as special. I think Wybrit's idea are probably too advanced for your average member of the public listener, but certainly food for thought. -
Very Important announcement
Chris Perkins posted a topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
Hello everyone, Well I often get positive remarks about this website and the way I conduct my business, and there is certainly a feel good factor when that happens. Yesterday I received perhaps the ultimate feel good factor email! I was invited by John Pilgrim of BBC Three Counties Radio to do a monthly call in slot on the radio station about coins and coin collecting, and he asked me to call him as soon as I could to discuss it over the telephone. I got the email quite late in the day, so called him the day after (Saturday 31st January). He explained he was the presenter, told me about the format etc, and that the studio is in Luton. I'm booked for February 27th, 3.30-4.00pm just for a general chat and a quick phone in. If it goes well and I'm happy to, it will be a monthly thing. Apparently the Radio station can often be picked up in places as far south as London, north as Lincolnshire, west as Swindon and east as far as East Anglia. Alas I can't seem to find where it is broadcast on the internet, so assume it isn't! But I'll ask when there. This is the Radio Station website: http://www.bbc.co.uk/england/threecounties/ I am of course excited, and naturally nervous too. I think the first thing I'll do is sort out that bloody 2p rumour and the £2 coin with the Queen wearing a necklace thing too....Should prevent at least 10 emails a month. -
59 exists, but in 1961 South Africa became a republic and the 50c (Half a Rand) is more or less the coin that replaced it in terms of size. That ran until 1964.

Bloody hell I'm 25 and I sound like your Gran!
-
You just want to collect everything don't you! Blimey. You should perhaps get uni out of the way and maybe even spend a little bit of the money on what's it's supposed to be spent on. There will still be bargains to be had when you're done. You cannot possibly buy everything that takes your fancy in your position. You should wait until you have a full time job for that kind of thing, and concentrate on one area now.

Great idea, but they'd probably do what spammers do and change it slightly to 'R@re' or even 'Rair'. And I think ebay should charge for 'Rare' but refund the fee if the item sells for over it's start price. I mean there probably are lots of other items that really are rarish.
-
Whenever I see the typical 'Rare' ebay coins I always wonder exactly what qualifies the seller to state that fact? I mean is it perhaps the fact that they only have 1, or have seen 1? Why can't the trade desriptions act be relevant on ebay auctions too? Because as we know, that year was fozen until 1970 and is the most common penny year of all time. I'm with you on the Heads side thing, I get so many people stating that the monarch is on the back, and usually don't bother replying to them. I think ebay would seriously raise their profile with collectors if they didn't allow crap like that and had a adjudicator to remove wastes of space.

I think he must be foreign, because 'Imprint' may be a bad translation and 'Elisabeth' is the correct German spelling, which is close. If he's British, then we have trouble!

I'm standing by. -
Olli's in Blackburn. Anyway, I must be the only Southerner here!
-
What do you need James? I can't possibly allow for links in this area to inferior competition can I
-
If it's from 1943 then it's perfectly normal and probably perfectly worthless. I believe that is one of the most commonly encountered questions faced by American dealers! They were made of Zinc coated steel because the Copper was needed in the war effort.
-
Hmmm, well I don't often get up that way. Maybe later in the year. Sylvester is more local to you....Sylvester if you're reading this, can you get to Manchester easily?
-
You need to get it verified as the real thing, cleverly stuck together coins can be very well done. Where are you?

Early Milled Coinage

Ah, what are you like. -8 is normal here, some nights it drops to -25. We have over a foot of snow, but it seems these German people take in in their stride....Long as it doesn't prevent me going 'home' on Monday -
Well I never, I'll be sure to visit Sainsbury's next week to see that strage 'error' coin.
-
Thanks for those! Buns are always hard for novices to grade but at least the start price is not too chuckle worthy. The 1869 is certainly around VF, it isn't a bad one but the £500 start price and god knows what reserve is ambitious. I'd probably sell that for around £100.00 and I'm sure i'd have to wait sometime for a buyer.

Coin Manage 2003

Thanks for your support, They are still linking to me as an example to encourage new affiliates: http://www.libertystreet.com/affiliat.htm I don't think the potential affiliates will be too impressed when they see the page that I used to promote Liberty Street on: http://www.predecimal.com/coinmanage.htm ;-) Wicked I know, but not libelous, just honest. I wonder if it takes them 21 days or more to remove the link! -
Well fair enough then. The 2 I mentioned are yours for £8.00 inc postage, and I'm sure they won't be going anywhere should you need a top up gift!
-
All I find useful is the English Silver Coinage book, (there I go again singing its praises) but that doesn't cover Copper/gold of course. I'm sure there are other useful books, but I don't find I need to refer to a lot of EM info.

Coin Manage 2003

I sent Paul at Liberty Street Software the following email on the 6th January 2004: ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Dear Paul, <<Stuff about shareware seller accounts etc>> I also notice from my sellshareware.com account that I sold one of your Roman coins packages back it September. I never got anything for that? I have also started a discussion in my Forum on www.predecimal.com where people can discuss this product and suggest improvements etc. All these people are experienced British coin collectors and have already spotted a few thing that could be improved. When we have finished this would you like to receive our joint suggestions? ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ I waited until the 17th January 2004, and after getting no reply I sent the same message again on the 17th asking if they had got the first one. 10 days after that, still nothing. 21 days and no reply! The Liberty Street customer service is rubbish, absolutely awful and that wasn't the first time I have waited an un acceptable time for a reply to emails. If they do not want to co-operate with me, I will not co-operate with them and I have removed all links and mentions of them from the website (I think... please let me know if you spot any!). I cannot endorse such an inefficient company. Nor do I find the product particularly excellent. Feel free to carry on discussing here, but bare in mind they probably won't listen! -
What do you want, a medal? Yes I think even I was the same all those years ago, knee high to a grasshopper, thinking, what is 'die alignment'? I soon realised the truth after I acquired a pre 1860 copper farthing and a post 1860 Bronze one. You know, all these wonderful books like Spink are all very well, but I feel many of them complicate things even more for beginners....Mind you, I suppose they are not aimed at the beginner are they.

As far as I can see all the other base metal denominations were issued that year, the 10 Rials, 5 Rials etc. I can see no precious metal coins apart from the questioned denominations you already mentioned. I have 2 small silver Iranian coins, both predate your husband by quite a way, but seeing as I'm unlikely to ever sell them to any German collectors (where I live) you're welcome to them priced to sell....They are: 500 Dinar 1332 (1913 AD) VF grade, boy king on obv with usual Iran beast with sword on back. 500 Dinar, Haven't worked out exact date yet, but I believe it's from around the 1890's early 1900's. Fine grade. Both coins are about 19mm and silver. They are both pretty.
