  1. I haven't confirmed it yet, but a woman has contacted me who seems to have found a Queen Anne Guinea in her change while rummaging to donate to a church collection box ! Now, it could of course be a forgery or token of some kind and of very little value, but if not, that has to be the change find of all 3 millenia ! God does work in mysterious ways Chris
  2. Well in my 1984 Seaby 'Coins of Scotland and Ireland' book it says £35 in Fine, £100 in VF. I have yet to invest in the latest edition but imagine the value has increased somewhat since then. I'm also no good at grading hammered at this stage in my career. if you want to sell it, ask my friend Richard at http://www.coinsforsale.co.uk , he knows his stuff. Chris
  3. Thanks Geoff, I look forward to hearing from you again. My Dad gave it to me one Birthday because it had a date on it very close to my birthday (29th June) Chris.
  4. Geoff, I have a 1902 Coronation medal, with a ribbon on it, do you know what that is? It has the King and Queen on one side and the Royal mongram with the date 26 June 1902 on the back. The whole thing is in a wreath that makes up the rim and a loop is attached to a crown. Appears to be silver. Attached to the loop is a ribbon with a red centre stripe with 2 thick blue stripes next to it and then white edges. Bad picture below:
  5. That's Dee Snider in drag, of Twisted Sister. Ok, not anywhere near as pretty as Kylie by any means. I just fancied a change. Chris
  6. Blimey Geoff, you even listen to music to match your coins! That's what I call dedication, and I'm sure it's very good. I maintain that if any of the Rock greats of today had lived during the 16/17th century, they'd be powerful classical geniuses....Just like Mozart or Beethoven would today be the Rock legends of our age. (Imagine Mozart in 'The Mozarts' about him and his disfunctional family!) The Electric guitar replaced the violin/piano orchestra etc as a means of Rocking the world. It's all the same to me. Real power and feeling is all you need. Chris
  7. I think i just corrected your spelling there but i'm not sure either! If you register you can login anonymously....Spooky a? Chris
  8. The general public are really very stupid, i've known that for some time now. Join this forum and become one of the elite! Chris
  9. Hoorah for grumpy old men! To follow on about your kids, I once had a youngster contact me who had a 1906 sixpence that was worn almost flat. I told them it was just worth 20p or so for silver content....Do you think they believed me? They exclaimed: 'But it's nearly a hundred years old, it must have a value!', to which I replied: 'You can buy coins that are 2500 years old for £20.00 so relatively speaking yours is almost new!' They would not have any of it, and it the end I had to be quite rude. Kids of today! (Olli excluded of course ) Chris
  10. Well I would imagine it most certainly does, you do of course have the gold value as a minimum, but personally I'd return it or exchange for another if you are not happy with it and are able to. Chris
  11. If you mean the 'Fair' numismatic grade then probably just a few pence for silver content. Is it the Maundy type groat (with a large '4' on back) or the circulation type groat (with the words 'FOUR PENCE' on the back)? Chris www.predecimal.com
  12. Bless your little cotton socks!
  13. Do you know Geoff, I have a beautiful 1888 EF or better Crown for £75.00 that i'm about to put in next weeks newsletter. Also have some other mid grade Jubilee head Crowns and Double florins. Don't tell anyone I told you, they'll all want exclusives! Chris
  14. Super, another knowledgeable chap in the Forum! Welcome Geoff T. I heard there were some rare versions on the official medal with the wrong date on them also? Chris
  15. Hello everyone, Now I know there is at least one of you with a condor token reference book, and i'd like to know what would be fair prices for these coins if I featured them on the site in the for sale section? Feel free to point me in the direction of any you have seen online, and pictures of mine are available on request. These are just sitting around, most are low grade, a couple are very nice and i'd like to shift them. The list: 1: Exeter Halfpenny 1792. Rev has coat of arms, obv shows Bishop with legend ‘SUCCESS TO THE WOOLEN MANUFACTORY’. ‘PAYABLE AT THE WAREHOUSE OF SAMUEL KINGDON’ on edge. Two M’s stamped on either side of the Bishop. Condition: Good, maybe NF at a push. 2: Kent Halfpenny Token 1794 Coat of arms and date on one side, another coat of arms with ‘SUSSEX’ under it and the legend ‘FOR CHANGE NOT FRAUD’ Edge Legend looks like ‘GIBBS SUSSEX PAYABLE BY’. Condition: Easily Fine perhaps even NVF. 3: Sheffield Penny Token 1815 (Have 2 of them) Standing figure on obv with ‘SHEFFIELD PENNY TOKEN’. Rev has legend ‘OVERSEERS OF THE POOR’ around an image of a building/house. Edge diagonally milled in centre like Soho issues. Condition: around Good/fair. 4: Liverpool Halfpenny 1791 Ship on obv with coat of arms on rev and latin legend which is not readable. Edge milled. Condition: Poor. 5: Monmouth Halfpenny 1795 ‘JAMES POWELL IMPORTER’ and 1795 on obv. Picture of a barrel in centre. Rev legend ‘J POWELL WINE & BRANDY MERCHANT MONMOUTH’ with grape picture. Edge says ‘PAYABLE AT MONMOUTH AND ABERGAVENNY’. Condition: As struck, no wear with a lacquered appearance. 6: Flint Lead works 1813 (Penny) Obv legend ‘FLINT LEAD WORKS’ and date, with image of the lead works. Rev has ‘ONE PENNY TOKEN’ in centre surrounded by ‘ONE POUND NOTE FOR 240 TOKENS’. Edge milled. Condition: Good/fair. 7: The Anglesey mines Halfpenny 1788 Parys miners company insignia on obv, druid on rev with wreath. Edge legend ‘PAYABLE AT ANGLESEY LONDON OR LIVERPOOL’. Condition: Good with scratches. 8: The Anglesey mines Halfpenny 1791 (Have 2 of them) As above but dated 1791 and edge reads ‘PAYABLE AT ANGLESEY OR LONDON’. Coin seems thicker. Condition: Good, perhaps better, but not the best dies used. 9: Hull Halfpenny 1791 Coat of arms, date, wreath, legend on obv. Rev has figure on horseback with legend ‘GULIELMUS TERTIUS REX’ (obviously a reference to William III) and a date MDCLXXXIX (1689 I think). Edge ‘PAYABLE AT THE WAREHOUSE ??????? GARTON’. Conditon: Good /fair. 10: Manchester Halfpenny 1793 Man carrying something on his back on obv. Rev has coat of arms and legend ‘SUCCESS TO NAVIGATION’. Edge is chevron milled. Condition: EF-UNC with much lustre. 11: Birmingham and Swansea halfpenny 1811 Quite plain with ‘ROSE COPPER COMPANY’ and diagonally milled edge. Condition: all readable struck with rubbish die, Good. 12: Bristol and South Wales Penny token 1811 Prince of Wales plume on obv. Rev shows a castle and ‘VIRTUTE ET INDUSTRIA’ Edge diagonal milled. Condition F-VF. 13: Birmingham One penny 1813 Picture of building on Rev. Coat of arms with ‘ONE POUND NOTE FOR 240 TOKENS’ and ‘PAYABLE AT THE WORKHOUSE’ on the rev. Edge diagonal centre milled. Condition: Good. 14: Edinburgh Halfpenny 1791 Coat of arms featuring castle on obv. Rev has ‘NEMO ME IMPUNE LACESSIT’ (as pound coin) with thistles and someone holding a large St Andrews cross. Edge says ‘PAYABLE AT THE WAREHOUSE OF THOs & ALEXr HUTCHISON’. Condition: around Fine. 15: Edinburgh Halfpenny 1792 Exactly as above but dated 1792. More to follow, depending how successful this is. Thanks, Chris
  16. Looks nice, certainly isn't a coin of the spendable type. Must be some kind of commemorative, but I've never seen one i'm afraid. Although i'd say it's most definately British as it refers to his British titles and none of the German ones. Chris
  17. Probably a small toy money coin, made for novelty purposes or for children to play with. Without knowing what's written (the legend should include the makers name) I cannot be sure. Chris
  18. I'm 25, as many of you know. Chris
  19. Does it show the Queens Jubilee head (crowned), and what is written on it? What is the diameter in mm, and does it feel heavy like gold, or is it probably brass? Chris
  20. Is it silver or gold coloured? If it's silver it could be a small silver denomination. If it's gold it's most probably toy money. Can you post a picture? Thankyou, Chris
  21. Users, When I get back from the UK on the 9th February I will be adding the forum users to my mailing list that have the 'Get added to my mailing list' option switched on. When you register in the Forum the default setting is 'Yes'. Some of you are already on it, but those of you that would rather not receive a fortnightly (maximum frequency) email from me to tell you about new coins I have available, books and accessories etc please turn off the 'Get added to my mailing list' switch in your profile. You can do this by logging in, clicking on 'My Controls' scrolling down the left pane to 'Edit profile info' and turning the lowest dropdown box (with the question) to the 'No' option. For a little bit of info on the Newsletter, please see here: http://www.predecimal.com/newsletterinfo.htm I won't be offended if you choose 'No' it is of course up to you. Thanks, Chris
  22. I think that's a problem many collectors have, I mean how could you turn down an EF Edward VII florin, even if you are not collecting them, and if it was for a good price? Not a problem if you had limitless funds, but I suspect you don't! Maybe you should designate a monthly budget and promise yourself that at least 80% of it will go on the coins you specialise in, and not a % more. Chris
  23. Everyone get into Led Zepplin this minute for a free 1967 Penny! Chris_Lander, why don't you actually register, you seem to contribute more than some members already. Chris
  24. Well, as I'm sure the regulars have already noticed, I have juggled things around a bit in the forum, mainly in an attempt to make things easier to find for new people (and old people!). I found that everything had got very big and was starting to get out of control. I had a technical problem at first, which prevented me from being able to fully control the forum layout, but after I donned my thinking cap I was able to sort it out. I am now in complete control you'll be pleased to hear! The main changes basically involved the creation of 3 seperate areas; one for all British coin related things, the second for general coin/money related discussions and the third for this kind of non coin related nonsense! Because many of the topic titles contained no clue about what the information held within it was regarding I also undertook to rename some of the topics based on what they contained. If you're looking for something that you can't find anymore, you'll probably find it exists under a different name, so use the 'search' facility above. I have also approved quite a few new members, bringing the membership total up to almost 100 now, which is pretty impressive. Going by some emails I have received, I think a few of those should hopefully become regulars. Please forgive me if you are one of the new batch and waited a while to be approved (my fault entirely). Any other improvement ideas, and your opinions on the new layout will be gratefully received and treated with the utmost disrespect, and probably a few lies about how 'I had already thought of that and was going to do it soon' 'As you were'... Chris www.predecimal.com
  25. Yes maybe you could start with all the major varieties. I didn't realise there were only 26 1864 die numbers. In that case yes, why not try to get every 1864 die number, and if that proved impossible move onto 1868 die numbers. (or start with 1868 die numbers) I think you know what you want to do already... you want to collect everything you have mentioned and like many collectors have trouble focusing. Whatever you decide to concentrate on you know that if something interesting comes along, you'll take it too! Chris
