Some acquired Hammered coins
Chris Perkins replied to Chris Perkins's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
Again, going on the ticket included, this one is an 'Edward I Class 3c Penny of London. Early S, drapery in one piece, hollowed at centre'. Correct attribution? -

Further back now. This is clearly a groat with annulet (circle) mint mark. EDWARD DI GRA and it's certainly a London coin. But which Edward/Monarch? I couldn't find one with annulet mint mark! -

Another Charles I shilling. I couldn't find one in Spink that seemed to match this one. It appears to have a harp mint mark. Some flan damage, but it's still strong. -

Next is a Charles I shilling, mint mark triangle, Spink 2797? There are a couple with triangle mint marks, is this correct? -

2008 20 PENCE COIN WITH STRANGE MARKING NEXT TO MD
Chris Perkins replied to chris's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
Thanks. It has slight wear and signs of contact with other coins, as you'd expect for a coin that has circulated for up to 10 months. I'd pay £50 for it. -

That same thing was also reported here a few months ago. I believe it is a '1' and probably (I don't know if the Royal Mint confirmed it) is some kind of die number. I've not been able to find one myself; how much do you want for it? -
Yes, I've had lots of contact recently about the 20p and the NEW PENCE 2p's. And as ever, the public have got it all wrong and are trying to sell me normal 2p's with NEW PENCE on them that are not from 1983. Little bit annoying, I may as well make a recording and play it when people phone!

1862 farthing small 8 over large 8
Chris Perkins replied to chris's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
I think it's most likely that the date has been re-punched as the 6 also appears slightly doubled. An excellent choice of book though, make sure you get one every year now -
I'd only google.de and google.co.uk, which I expect you've already done!

Yeah, it's probably as rare as the undated 2008 20p! Put it on ebay and see if you can get 7 Grand for it! -

The Standard Guide to Grading British Coins - Available
Chris Perkins posted a topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
It is with great pleasure that I can now anounce the availability of "The Standard Guide to Grading British Coins (1797 - 1970)" by Derek F Allen (the forum's very own Red Riley). In my opinion this landmark title is one of the most important numismatic publications for years. It cannot fail to raise standards in the industry and everyone with the slightest involvement in British coins should own one! I'd sold about 40% of the initial print run before the book was published. For those of you that are not aware of it, more details are here: http://www.rotographic.com/grading_british_coins.htm Or, in my ebay listing for it, here: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...em=180352504023 Del and I thought it would be a great idea to give forum members first refusal on the limited number (of 50) copies signed by the author. The RRP is £12.99 and that's exactly what a signed copy costs too! On top of that is £2.50 postage within the UK, total £15.49. Payment can be made via paypal to cp@predecimal.com with the subject 'Signed Grading Book'. For other payment methods or postage costs outside of the UK please contact either myself or 'Red Riley'. -

The Mk1 version only ever works with quarter lights that you can angle at your face! My age is about the same as the temporature here at the moment (in Celcius, obviously). Del is probably already on the Fahrenheit scale!! -

smooth edged 10p coin
Chris Perkins replied to a topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
Trust me, it's very worn, like all early 90s 10p's are by now. Actually I think there are 2 different edges for that date, rounded and square. That looks to be a square type that's missed it's millings. -

It's very worn, although not worn enough for the milling to dissapear, so that makes it a mint error. But because it's so worn it's just worth a few quid. -
Happy birthday Chris

It's an old car too (1980 - early one for aircon). So it's no doubt an old breeding ground for bacteria. I hope that after it runs cold for a bit that they all die. But as an extra measure I've got some antibacterial lemon smelling stuff that you leave spraying in the car so that it recirculates and goes right round the aircon system. I'll also spray some in the external air intake and clean the foam filter! I've got to take a bride in it on saturday so the last thing I want is bride plus other wedding guests getting ill! Could end up a frustrating honeymoon for the groom! -
Happy birthday Chris

Thanks everyone. I was actually ill until a couple of days ago with acute bacterial sinusitis. Not very nice and I needed antibiotics. I'm wondering if the pesky bacteria came out of my car aircon because the car had been standing for 8 months and shortly after starting it and using the aircon, bacteria were in my head! What do you think? -
1983 2p new pence for selling
Chris Perkins replied to a topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
You've emailed me haven't you. Are they in the 1893 year sets? How many? -
No they're not. The so called 'London Mint' are trying to buy them back as far as I heard. They are not the Royal Mint but seem to like being confused with them. The London Mint aren't in London and don't mint coins. They are simply a business that repackages coins, buys excess stock etc in order to sell them on often at massive profits. I've need to see a scan. Personally I'd only want a really exquisite example and for such a perfect example I'd pay more than £50, it just depends how good.

Very odd! I've never had any involvement with the Waterfowl assoc, but it's good to know they are also selling my books :-S
