sixpence in leather mint roll
Chris Perkins replied to a topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
I've approved you Ozgirl. Probably not a good idea to open it, but other that that I don't know how you're going to find out the dates! In the 60's they came in canvass kind of bags, so it should be earlier....Although if they are Australian I don't know how they packed them. -

I was hoping you'd come along Dave! -
Britannia Moneta Token?
Chris Perkins replied to Hussulo's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
I'm sure I've seen a picture of one of those somewhere, I don't know where. The style is modern, but of course the RM moved away from London in '68 so it should be older than that. I think that Britannia looks like a geezer, with legs spread, hammering a coin. Not very flattering is it. -
Exams and tests galore!
Chris Perkins replied to Emperor Oli's topic in Nothing whatsoever to do with coins area!
I was unlucky the first 2 times on my driving test in cousin Victor's newish Fiesta. The first time was mainly because the Police had my provisional driving licence at the time, but that's another story! The 2nd time I had the same examiner and I'm sure he remembered and failed me again. I passed on the 3rd go in my 1974 Triumph Toldeo. You could coast that thing all day, and unlike screaming modern cars the re-engagement never made a sound! -
Odd coin, please look, hybrid 50p/£2 coin
Chris Perkins replied to adobanton's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
British errors tend to usually go for around £20 - £80. This is an interesting one, so I've bought it (paid with paypal). It all depends on how much someone is willing to pay for it, there is no other measure with errors. -
What's the best book for IDing Roman coins?
Chris Perkins replied to Fraggle Rock's topic in Beginners area
I always use forumancientcoins.com ( I thik that's the URL). I know the proprietor, as he buys books from me. Then there's also wildwinds.com that's good too. Both sites have a huge database of coins and images. For the Sear books, do a search on Amazon, they have them. -

Odd coin, please look, hybrid 50p/£2 coin
Chris Perkins replied to adobanton's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
That's wierd isn't it! The outer part seems to have been struck with the 50p machine! Errors are not that common, but they do happen. I've seen coins in the wrong metals, struck on the wrong flan, with bits missing etc. I'd offer you £60 for the £2 you have. I think that's very fair, but let me have firt priority if you get any other offers. -
What's the best book for IDing Roman coins?
Chris Perkins replied to Fraggle Rock's topic in Beginners area
Sorry, I was referring to the Base metal book! The silver book doesn't refer to Allegorical reverses much, although I suspect if you find one that isn't listed it'll be around about the same value as any godess type. To be sure, you'll nead the Sear range of books, published by Spink. -
What's the best book for IDing Roman coins?
Chris Perkins replied to Fraggle Rock's topic in Beginners area
Don't forget that in the Books where 'Allegorical types' is stated, the coin could have any one of a number of reverses as features on page 4 and 5. I don't think I've found one that isn't covered yet in the books. Most of the allegorical types are worth about the same. -

They absolutely are, not that I'm saying Oli isn't a clever stick. How on earth is it possible that each year, higher than ever numbers of the proletariat are able to get A Levels until they come out of their ears and Degrees in tricky subjects such as Leisure and Tourism? People can't actually be getting on average cleverer, can they, at such an alarming speed? -
Silver Penny ?

Thanks, I knew about those I think. The Amazon reviews are on my books, but I suppose that helps too! -
Silver Penny ?
Chris Perkins replied to griff's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
Do I? Are there places that talk of predecimal.com? I'd be interested to hear where my reputation comes from. -
And the way he bids up in increments of £10 makes it look like he wanted the get the most out of the current high bidder at the time!

Silver Penny ?
Chris Perkins replied to griff's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
I do an album, printed book, lens and some envelopes as a starter accessory pack. As for coins, I can sell you 50 assorted pennies for £8 plus postage (Edward VII to Elizabeth II as I've run out of Victorian). There are other inexpensive coins on predecimal.com Chris -

Silver Penny ?
Chris Perkins replied to griff's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
If it's very tiny with a '1' on the back then it's a Maundy Penny. That's unlikely though, so if it's the large type with Britannia on the back then it's probably been plated or toned a silver colour for some reason. -
Commerative Medallions
Chris Perkins replied to a topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
The dealer sounds spot on all round. No serious coin collector is going to want a big medal showing Winston Churchill no matter how limited the numbers struck were, it's simply too modern. You might get a little more than the scrap metal value for them if you're very lucky and then probably not more than 10%. If I was you I'd take scrap vaue for them this very second. £75 is about the current value of sovereigns. So unless it's perfect because only really perfect mint examples are worth more, then take £75 for it. -
Novelty Bank Notes
Chris Perkins replied to TomGoodheart's topic in Nothing whatsoever to do with coins area!
All people that are obsessed with dogs or cats would probably buy uranium from Sellafield (sp?) if it had a sweet luminous kitten on it! There'll all bloody mad, and that's exactly the reason the the Isle of Man government have a vast and quite ridiculous range of assorted cat coins especially for such people. -
They are indeed the conditions. This should make it clearer: http://www.predecimal.com/shop/coin_grading.php

There's always a link to the current gold value here: http://www.predecimal.com/shop/british_gold_coins.php -
I think some people use private feedback because they don't want people to know what they're buying. You might not want people to know about certain personal items! So I can see the logic behind it. Obviously its open to abuse.

There were banknotes then for high amount like £5 (which was a lot then). And the previous reign George II halfcrowns would have still been in circulation. They would have still had the face value of 2 shillings and 6 pence.
