I hadn't even noticed it was Stamford. I just saw Waldlos and tranent East Lothian plus his wares & feedback.

Look what I got for Christmas
Ukstu replied to FKPhil's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
I think they had the Royal coats of Arms in the centre and not A guinea . Think its a brass coin weight. http://www.londoncoins.co.uk/?page=Pastresults&auc=140&searchlot=1256&searchtype=2 -
Peter Rabbit 50p with number 1 on it
Ukstu replied to Jinky's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
Gut feeling is it's probably a chinese fake like the kew gardens one's. I'd love to be proven wrong though jinky. Let us know what RM feedback to you. Merry Christmas. ? -
This may answer some questions. https://www.oldbaileyonline.org/static/Coinage.jsp Ahhh crap. This post is nearly 2 years old. Bit late ?
-
Definitely. If it was geniune it would of raised more. People were obviously suspicious/ cautious of it. Similar story with these Cnuts. £122 seems average price. That seems low to me . Obviously people are being cautious. Bulgaria has obviously moved past AR coins and spread it's wings.
-
Another one in Tranent East Lothian by a different seller. Seller has a neg for fakes and his other stuff doesn't look cosher. His name also sounds Cypriot. Definitely foreign looking. Positive these are not geniune coins. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Cnut-Penny-Waldlos-1029-35/282777368747

A very good price indeed. I must of missed that one. It's little discoveries like that which make it worthwhile trawling through hours of junk on eBay.

Half penny of Rhuddlan. Group 1 Class 1 of Henry II or Richard. Moneyer Halli.
-
Thanks Rob. You've confirmed what i thought. I've been looking to get either or Cnut or Aethelred II penny for Christmas. That Moneyer Waldlos at Lincoln has been popping up frequently , more frequently than you'd expect. That's what got me initially suspicious. I would never purchase a coin from Cyprus or Bulgaria due to them being hotbeds for counterfeiting. I think I'll be getting one from a dealer now. If those above are dodgy then somebody's upping the game as they look really good.
-
The very mention of Bulgaria is enough for me. I'd personally swerve it. A coin like that will / should have provenance. If they are not forthcoming about it's previous history I'd say they are trying to hide something and shift it on to somebody who will just take it no questions asked.

Thats a great find. Well done. I haven't managed to acquire any Class 2 coins yet. They are as you know rare as hens teeth. It's an excellent example. I think i own that £102 copy of Mass. Came to £107 with p&p , when i started collecting i placed more emphasis on buying coins rather than books about them. As time went by i wised up , it's taken me 4 years to find a copy. Here is the link to the Austin coin. Its a class 1b1. Mass had a cut half that spelled out USTIN. He lists it on page 86 as unknown. https://mobile.twitter.com/detectingdigsuk/status/711679605057388545

Thoughts on these 3. I wouldn't touch them thats for sure. Cyprus and dispatch from Bulgaria mentioned in the neg feedback. No thanks. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1016-King-Cnut-Silver-Penny-Short-Cross/263401343332 https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1016-King-Cnut-Silver-Penny-Quatrefoil/263401343189 https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1016-King-Cnut-Silver-Penny-Short-Cross/263401343600 Different seller but similar coins. https://www.m.ebay.co.uk/itm/Cnut-Short-Cross-Silver-Coin-Waldlos-Of-Lincoln-1029-35/222760643838 https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Cnut-Short-Cross-Silver-Penny-Waldlos-Of-Lincoln-1029-35-/222760639255 Look at the first 1 & last 2. Thoughts? Am i being paranoid or is this abnormal.

Thought on where the Plantagenets begin?
Ukstu replied to Coinery's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
I'd go with Henry II tealby and SC , Richard Ist , John , Henry III Sc & Lc, Edward 1-3 , Richard II , Edward IV and Richard III. You may struggle with a Richard III. Its the only one i don't have. One day I'll find one. Rather save and get a groat i think. -

Henry II. -
I have 2 coins from the mass/sazama collection. Not great examples but worth owning for the provenance. I finally acquired a copy of Mass a few months ago. Up til then I'd managed with a copy of Wrens Short cross coinage and Gerry Slevins Short cross legends. I still use the short cross legends more than mass. If you don't already own it , it is well worth adding to your Christmas list or one to own. The guy who wrote it is okay, i sometimes email him occasionally to ask him stuff , he'll also use some of my coins as examples in his updated editions of it with permission. Did you see the new coin of Henry II that was discovered by a detectorist last year? Moneyer Austin at Oxford , not listed in Mass although he had a rough idea of its existence. I posted a link to it on here a few months back.
-
Excellent. Sounds like you've got a good knowledge of Plantagenet hammered coins. I am still chasing some of the rarer mints. I saw a complete Chichester on eBay a few weeks ago listed as an unknown hammered coin. Somebody else must of spotted it though as it went up quite high and I was outbid. It was a good example slightly off centre but the mint was eligible. I've got a few mules under John and a few that are not listed in Mass. That's the good thing about eBay , you can pick up stuff that's not been identified by dealers.
-
Not something i see often but i don't usually buy part coins. Do you collect the many short cross coins? They were kind of the first hammered coins i started to collect. I sometimes deviate off in other directions but always seem to come back to the short cross series. There is so many avenues to explore with different mints , monarchs and moneyers i never bore of them.
-
Thanks Dave. Not my thing but i know some people collect them if they are geniune.
-
Probably not a worst offering. Not sure if they are geniune but figured if they are somebody may want them. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/x2-Decimal-Errors-1971-2p-with-Planchette-Cut-1975-Half-Thickness-2p-A371/142571141070

Great share ! Thanks for posting it , i am not on Facebook so never seen these before. -
Welcome toddmeister. You came to the right place, great bunch of folk on here with different collecting areas. Between the lot of us i am sure we can advise or assist you in your new hobby.
-
Crikey. Not leaving much out are they. Almost every area of collecting has effectively been covered/ replicated. Glad I've got an eye for pewter spotting!

It is yeah. Gets very busy in the summer. I've had my drone up there a few times. Get some great panoramic shots. Strange place it's got an aura that just draws you to it. Feel blessed to have it on my doorstep.

I've once had to turn back off there and head down due to 70 mph+ winds that were only a light breeze by the pub carpark. I was literally taking 2 steps forward and being blown back 3. It was difficult just to stay upright. Very bizarre but it shows how different the weather can be within the space of a mile or so.
-
I think its people going up who've never been up there mainly and in poor conditions. I usually set off from the Well spring's pub and go that way up takes me just over an hour to hit summit. I've got slightly disoriented in fog but always kept to the trails so had no problems getting up there or back. This was the incident i was referring to recently. https://www.burnleyexpress.net/news/lost-couple-rescued-from-pendle-hill-1-8905552
