Has anybody got any hammereds that have been deliberately damaged or defaced? I dug this one a few years ago. I've seen quite a few more since of James I that have been defaced in a similiar manner. Occasionally Commonwealth coins pop up in bad shape also with graffiti.
-
Me also. I struggle a little with classification of Edwards I-II & III but i am fine with the voided longcross and shortcross series. It really depends on condition of coin and which parts are visible.
-
Nice bunch of Eddys. If you want free help on identification i find this websites great for Edwardian long cross classification. http://www.ukdfd.co.uk/pages/edwardian-Pennies/Edwardian%20Pennies%20P1.htm#The groups Theres also a section on there for voided longcross classification http://www.ukdfd.co.uk/pages/Long-Cross-Pennies/Long%20Cross%20Pennies%20P1.htm (henry III) also there is www.henry3.com for voided longcross help.

Its a brass half guinea coin weight of William III. They where used to check the weight of a real half guinea as counterfeits were rife in them days. Dates to between 1690- 1702. Value is anywhere between £25- £50. Thats roughly what they sell for on eBay. People do collect them so if you put it on eBay with a buy it now price it will likely sell. Seems to have some good detail to it so it will sell easily i think. Nice find

He will indeed. When he listed his first two and he had in the listing he'd found a bag full in his garden i knew then he was lining the way to frequently offload them. I am hoping he gets a neg on his feedback off this last sale. He's a real prize prick.
-
Thats what makes them so dangerous. Not my area am afraid. It makes me think twice about diversifying my collection. Still a victory Hibernianscribe getting him to pull them. If he relists them as novelty then i suppose thats fair enough but in the future they will reappear on ebay as geniune no doubt.
-
Well done. Good job. Sometimes the moral stick works. ?
-
1871 gone. Hes pulled it.? He's only just listed the other as a novelty. Probably relist it as the same.
-
You would think he would know better than to ruin his reputation over a few quid for fake Victoria pennies. What a bozo. I'll be closely scrutinizing anything he's selling from now on. I've bought from him also. What I've noticed with ebay and our mass reporting is that if its not got a bid on it they will pull it but once it's running they don't. I can see that going on to complete sale unless the seller can be persuaded. Perhaps a friendly word about reputation , future faith etc might sway him.

Highly suspicious one ere. Has that heart shape on it the Lizzys have. It doesn't look right either. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Charles-II-hammered-coinage-three-Pence-Silver-Coin-/272805389565

? Lol. Classic. Point proven eh! ?
-
Crazy isn't it. People paying silly money for coins wacked with an axe or whizzed with a grinder. Common sense tells you it's deliberate damage. I just cannot understand the mentality of these buyers. A fool and his money are quickly parted.
-
Indeed. Looks like that angle grinders been busy again ?
-
? Lol. Got my first one of those last night in my change. Bought a pint of milk and my morning paper with it today.

I can see your point about that. Early shillings from the reign of Elizabeth definitely yes. Once they are clipped they would be extremely hard to distinguish from say a Sixpence but once they started clearly stamping coins (J1) with the denomination this would render such an act pointless so it doesn't explain the damage on mine in my opinion plus there is stab marks on the kings effigy , a strong case for defacement I'd say.
-
I suppose in some cases your theory could well be the case but I'd still swing towards a political or faith statement in others. Depending on how you rotate a coin a x could well be + so it could symbolize the cross which could point towards Catholics. Also the x could symbolise a ritual killing if you like. I suppose it depends on individual coins and the wear on them plus the markings placed on them, if i saw a badly worn shilling that had a defined xii marked into it I'd roll with your theory.
-
Think my one aboves a clear defacement. 4 lines plus peck marks. I've seen James I sixpences also scratched. If it was badly worn I'd agree but the denomination is clearly eligible also. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/James-I-1603-49-Hammered-Silver-Sixpence-1603-mm-Thistle-/391858831445

Another one bites the dust. Good work guys. ?
-
Quite true. Good analysis. Considering how unpopular Charles was it is odd that many coins of his do not turn up defaced. I figured with James it was Catholics or people who were anti scottish that defaced them. I've seen a few crossed out of his. That ones got peck marks also like someone's took a stab at him. Your right also about it being early issues. The others I've seen are all 1603-1605. Thistle & Lis mm.
