Best bet. It's easier to speak to somebody and get clarification. I've never had any auctioneer from the saleroom.com take money without me instigating the payment, but i haven't used Hansons.
-
Usually you get an invoice with a link where you can pay the saleroom.com direct or there is instructions with bank details of where to pay or alternatively you ring them and pay over the phone but these usually arrive after the auction by the auctioneer via e-mail. Ring them on Monday before 12pm and settle over the phone you can also enquire about in house postage and packaging and settle that if its needed.

George IV Crown - Chinese fakes
Ukstu replied to seuk's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
That's why i don't bother with Roman coins. It is a minefield agreed. I haven't encountered any fake hammered as such other than the pewter novelty replicas and they are easy to spot even without the copy or WRL stamps just by the way they look. That soapy look as they call it , i can spot them a mile off. Have a look at some here to familiarise yourself with them. I've even bought a few to get a proper look and feel for them then gave them my kids. http://www.museumreproductions.co.uk/shop/category.php Here is some links that may be of interest too you. Its also useful to look at some of the coins people list as fake on some forums. There is many documented on previous posts on predecimal. If you have your suspicions that a coin may be fake a simple google search using fake 1855 half crown as an example will pull up lots of results from forums showing images of such examples. Its hit and miss but you can search through most and pick out the useful ones. You find the weights and measurements of most coins online using Google. I find the PAS website useful for getting weights and sizes of hammered coins. Hope this helps. http://www.calgarycoin.com/reference/fakes/fakeswebsites.htm http://www.psdetecting.com/Forgeries-Page.html -

George IV Crown - Chinese fakes
Ukstu replied to seuk's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
I own an awlful lot of books but none about fakes. It seems to be an area that's not written about much apart from contemporary coins like evasion coins. There is websites listing known fakes and showing you what to look out for. You just pick it up as you handle and view coins. You can instinctively tell if they are pewter or iffy. I rarely buy expensive coins but if i do they are weighed and measured after purchase. I've been stung a few times with Roman coins (duponduis) but i knew as soon as they where in my hand they were bad. At the moment this austerity business is driving normal law abiding people to commit frauds especially on eBay. Its not just coins either , i am seeing lots of fresh flint items being sold as prehistoric some have been soaked in drain unblocker to falsely age them even. Shot putts and mill balls being passed off as Cannonball. Again if you handle stuff like that regularly or find it you get a feel for it and instinctively you know if its not right. -
Farmers market. Sounds similar to my local one in Clitheroe but Silverwoods do the evaluations there usually apart from the car boot ones.
-
All of them look iffy. I would not personally buy any of them. Think I'll swerve them in the future. Whoever's doing valuations there needs sacking.

Its either a 5 or 10 Sols of Louis XIV of France. 5 sols is 20mm. 10 sols is 23mm.
-
Thank you both for that. I never thought about that PWA 1967. Thanks Nick i will try that website , its got to worth a try. ?

Exactly. Cover all the bases if its a blatant WRL replica . Download his images highlight the WRL stamps include them in an email with eBays policy on replica coins and stamps and an apology lol. They will have to relist. Maybe someone else will do it again. Its one way of tackling it or slowing it down. What can eBay do if they are confronted with the evidence? Reprimand the seller not the buyer. Your well within your rights. You could even mention trading standards , fraud police etc. Just don't contact the seller while the auctions running or report the item then it looks like a genuine bid followed by a moment of enlightenment ?
-
Yeah he said i was trying to fool him. Predictable. Same line all the time when they are confronted. I'll just have to start playing dirty in future and bidding on them. I doubt ebay will reprimand me. Whose going to bubble themselves to ebay to complain about someone backing out of buying a prohibited item!
-
Yes sure post them up. To publish more than one picture you add one image post the message then go back to it and hit edit. Add the further image , post it then edit and so on just following that routine. You can only do that for a short while though , the edit feature expires after a period of time. If it does just add on to the topic and continue the run.

It looks fine to me. A nice looking coin as well i might add. Post it up on latest acquisitions I'd love to see the other side.

Yes there both WRL reproductions . I msged him about this he told me it was "old crap in boxes" he was getting rid of. His words not mine lol. I told him that was an accurate description of them but he never got back to me. He's had 12 inquiries , most I suspect are people telling him there reproductions but he's denying they are. Also two of the bidders who ran it up have now retracted bids. It was at £728. I suspect that was done on purpose to put people off bidding. The guys a scumbag. If i wasn't selling stuff on ebay I'd win them myself then refuse payment. His attitude to its F-U there not replica coins mind your own business. Sent all those 3 pictures below to him on Tuesday or Wednesday. He's fully aware of what he's selling.

Look at the bidding history on these. It looks like somebody's doing what you did declan. ? http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/122598565708
-
They look like Nuremberg Jetons. Not my area but if you google them you should be able to get more information. Don't clean them.
-
Spoken about this before and I've considered doing it myself but if it was done frequently you'd probably get a freeze on your account if someone lodged a complaint. I think its something we are all just going to have to accept is going on and ebay will not address it. I don't think there is any quick fix solution to this unfortunately without ebay support its pointless. I've stopped getting frustrated by it now. I just occasionally post the silly ones on here under eBays worst offerings. Just continue to report them , thats as much as we can do. Boycotting eBay will not work the numbers would be that small it would be like throwing a deckchair off the titanic.

Replica Coins on Ebay
Ukstu replied to ozjohn's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
Thats just lip service to cover there backs and make it actually look like they are doing something. There actions say otherwise. Alot of us are serial reporters , me included. I've not seen anything pulled this year that I've reported other than stuff I've guilt tripped sellers into removing with moral advice. -
Very true. I've seen feedback people have left for coins I've identified as fake. I saw somebody once leave positive feedback for a William I pax penny thats sold by museum reproductions in Runcorn. He paid £250 for it. Same week another 2 where listed by separate sellers both identical and both replicas from the same cast mould as the first one.
-
Thanks. I didn't even see that. ?
-
I think so yes. I translated the link (Russian) and he's asking about the coins identity and evaluation. Value i assume. Looks as if its been holed at one stage. There's also some confusion as to whom it's attributed too. A user on the other forum is saying its swedish and the king is Anund Jakob.

Oomf sold for £460. Ouch that's going to sting if they're savvy enough to realise it's garbage. Good luck with eBay customer service lol.
