It's probably ABEL as the ON starts just before the six oclock position. SAMVEL would extend further round the coin.
-
Abel would also end in an L. The portrait has the vacant look in the eyes you see on class 5c coins of John.

I rarely buy Romans myself but it's hard to resist if a good British mint coin like London or Colchester pops up cheap. Nice buy for £8 that well found.
-
It would. It's not listed in spink as being rare. I'd bet if i dug my Brooker Collection book out it wouldn't be either. The anchor mintmarks not rare that i am aware of. Have you seen the price of his other sixpence? That's way over the mark as well. Stu.
-
Totally agree Frank. See it every day now with people claiming varieties that they are not. I'd stretch to £300 for it myself if it was suitable priced. People like that sell very little I'd guess at prices like that.
-
Well it's certainly not worth that much lol. In VF my old 2016 Spink book puts it at £500. It's america though , they seem to pay silly money over there for common coins. A fool and their money is easily parted i guess. Anyone in the know will give it a cursory glance and gag at the price and move on i suspect. Ebays full of dreamers like this seller unfortunately. Stu.

It looks like an Indian gold fanam of some sort. Not something i am familiar with myself so can't provide a full ID. Stu.

Coinery does make a good point here i must agree. I think though for clear peace of mind I'd go with the return and refund , the what if factor will niggle away at you if you keep it and it could come back on you in the future if you try to sell it. As Jerry says do invest in some jewellers scales for future purchases and most of all " Do not let this put you off collecting" Stu.

They are not something i am familiar with myself. I've only ever viewed them in books or online but I'd agree it does not sit well on closer inspection. Those letters should not be single dot punch marks.
-
Agreed. I was viewing it on my phone. As you say they look like single dot punches on closer inspection. Could it be a contemporary forgery?
-
Excellent. Well done. It's very rare i ever find any decent coins in charity shops. I think a lot of it's picked up by staff or they hold it back for regular customers.
-
Shapes about normal for that period , I've never saw one that was completely round , it's been clipped. People would probably of accepted it even if it was smooth back then as long as it was of reasonable size without lots of clipping. Good find , they are not easy to come by and not something you'd expect to find in a charity shop so you've done well. It is in a collectable condition.

Looks okay. Doesn't look cast anyway and has no marks you'd expect to see on a replica. I make it Spink 2316 Portcullis Mintmark (108) Stu

Its a penny of Stephen dating to 1135 - 1154. I can't make out which type though ( probably Watford type). The coinage from that period is not of a great standard unfortunately. Some dies where defaced during the Anarchy period so as not to show allegiance to any side.

I think your on the right track Gaz. Not 100% sure but i think its pre treaty period series G type F. Spink 1595. In Christopher R Wrens book The English long cross pennies 1279 -1489 he mentions both type F and type G as having pellets in TAS (page 94) Sadly the book does not have any illustrations to go on though so this is why i am not 100 % sure. Perhaps Dave Greenhalgh will be able to give you a more definite identification when he's on next.

So, Brexit....What's happening?
Ukstu replied to azda's topic in Nothing whatsoever to do with coins area!
Agreed it is a mess now but i was never keen on Mrs Mays Brexit in name only deal. What's next and will it be in keeping with Democracy? Well that's anyone's guess now this thing's had more twists n turns than a rollercoaster and at times been dirtier than a baby's nappy. I do hope it's resolved democratically and in a civilised manner though going forward. -

Are you some kind of Russian troll bot? I am struggling to make sense of any of your previous posts. I had seen people saying Bots have been posting on Brexit stuff on Youtube but i was sceptical but now i am not sure. -

Cardboard 2x2 holders effect on toning

Same method as Mick with no issues. Longterm storage also 10+ years. I check them every few months for any changes and replenish the silica packs. Absolutely no issues with them at all. -
It was given two applications. I pooled it on it for about 40 mins then took the toothpick to it to pick off / scrape at it. Once i was satisfied I'd got it all off I washed it in acetone then pooled it on again and left it for around 40 mins before dabbing it dry with a cloth and leaving it to air dry completely for 24 hrs. That coin above has had two previous unsuccessful treatments with distilled water and acetone. Each time it's broken out again within a few months. I am hoping the verdi cares stopped it it now. If not I'll just have to try again. It's been a week since treatment and all's okay so far. Fingers crossed.

Verdi care....before & after. Sorry about the picture quality it was just to record the results.
-
Some people say soak it for a period of time in distilled water then pick at it with a tooth pick and finally soak it in acetone. I've tried this method and had some success and some fails. I am currently trying Verdi care on some coins and have had good results so far but it's too early to say if it work's in the long term. The problems may return over time.

Yes. Looking like Fake news. Surrey police have announced with no photographic evidence it's highly likely to have been either a hoax or mistaken identity of a bird or something. Labour appear to be demanding an inquiry into it , guess they haven't been told yet!

Looks geniune to me. Not something you often see in that condition so scarce. Moneyer reads Sigarus on London. Star in Lozenge fleury type spink 1274.
