Hi All, This is not about coins. Back in May in this year I bought a couple of lots, cognac and liquar via Saleroom from a auctioneer which I won't name for now, its in Scotland. After confirming my payments I waited several weeks but no update so I contacted the auctioneer and was told there were problem with the courier and that he will personally get it done. A couple of weeks later heard nothing and the same response, weeks later nothing and the reply I got was that he will issue me a refund instead, that was 4 weeks ago. I tried Saleroom but they say there is nothing they could do. I tried emailing the auctioneer for update and phoneing him but got not reply. I tried their facebook asking about it again no reply. Today I find that the auctioneer has blocked me accessing his facebook. I dont know what financial situation they are in but it does seem they are trying to scam me. In one of the phone calls when he was still answering me who I believe is the owner sounded distress going on about child maintenance support and that is why he weren't able to deal with my outstanding order in time. Payment was made via "pay.sumup.io" using my debit card. Any advice on how to get my money back"

Sad to see the business go without anyone taking over. The Peter Nichols name is a lucrative one. When they took over the business from Peter I seem to recall it was a three way ownership, Geoff, Shirley and a young man probably a son who was into motor bikes? This now leaves Rob Davis as probably the sole professional coin cabinet maker in the UK.

I bought a couple of coins from them in the past all relatively common and nothing super expensive, obviousely I would never know if the provence could be trusted but that goes with other dealers too.

Its basically the same if the strokes are there just as in differnt handwriting or a stylised version.

If your cabinet has thick enough trays you could put the coin inside a capsule.

Are the trays thick and double recessed? I like trays that are thick especially if the recesses are larger to cater for larger coins and make the coins more secured.

Looks like from the mid or late 1990s when Peter switched from "Stamp & Coin Shop" label. I prefer the mahogany used before 2004, that was the year when there was some kind of restriction imposed and what we had since was smaller or younger pieces of mahogany buid up to size.

In itself the production of coin cabinets has little to no effect on carbon omission but collectively as far as trading in mahogany and deforestation it will have an impact on the wood that is being available. Prices will go up. If other countries start putting mahogany on par with trading ban on ivory that will spell an end.

Any more coin cabinet news? I picked up a very nice late Victorian Lincoln style coin cabinet from an auction that use to belong to Paul Munro Walker. Its the better version with well fitted smooth/none sticking sliding trays, not the stacking trays type. Must be were he keeps his prized ancient coins that was once the envy of the world 😛 I checked it over and given it a good shake to make sure there is no secret compartment or coins hidden away😉

Another theory is earth worms burrowing and moving the coin elsewhere. I notice earth worms and increase soil in the area that looks like worms has been habituating. Obviousely disappointed the coins arent found but its a different sort of excitement trying to find it.

Magpies is worrying as I've seen them quite often. The coins werent shiney, one was almost patinated but I wanted it darker still, the other is dull light patina forming, they were quite dirty with soil the last time I saw them.

I left couple of Roman sestertius on top of soil and shallow grass in my back garden to help patinate them back in early October. Went to check this morning and I could not find them. I know there has been some storm and rain these past few months. The soil has slightly more grass now but I notice there has been build up of soil about were I think the coins are . My garden is not accessible and I was the only person who goes there. How did the coin disappeared? Could it be submerged, carried by rain water or encased in soil. Have no idea. I just ordered a hand held metal detector.

He has listed it again. Bloody amazing. You can actually see more of the legend missing from his latest photo because pieces were broken off when I recieved it. Got my money back but still cost me £8 sending it back

Just got a reply from the seller Sasa Stankovic "This coin is my personal find and it's 1 000 000% authentic.The guy who told you that it's a fake coin has no clue about Roman coins. But no problem I will accept a return." Is it a genuine mistake from him? Well I don't need anyone to tell me but anyone who never collected coins will know its a piece of mortar and not metal. Its been doctored and painted and if you touched ancient coins before this feels and look like resin, even though the photos look convincing which is enhanced to look real. The seller listed as from Greece but actually from Serbia (again why the deception?). I dont doubt there is great ancient coins in Serbia but everytime I bought a fake coin its from that part of the world or the seller has an eastern european name including one based in Britain. I would have automatically avoided if it was listed as from Serbia, Bulgaria, Romania. I'm sure its a great place to holiday and lovely people, unless I get to visit a dealer in those countries and see the coin up front I just don't buy coins online from sellers based there because I've yet to come across a genuine coin that came from these places.

It look so convincing with the patina and aged appearance it even partly coated in varnish you often see in some ancient bronze coins, the detail all looked right which is hard to replicate in most casts made from metal but can be more successful if in cement or resin. The pieces already broken off were quite signficant chunks and was still packaged wrapped in thick tissue and sent to me so I dont understand why the seller would still want to proceed with the sale. It was just too obvious, and its also obviouse I will make a case to ebay to get my money back and wasted both our times returning it and then risking reputational damage in collectors forums such as this one as a seller we should all avoid. Crazy!!!!

The original Peter Nichols of St Leonard has officially retired and his "Stamp & Coin Shop" has closed. I notice all the wooden coin cabinets on the Royal Mint website are on backorder. Is this anything to do with the pandemic and people have found more time at home taking up the hobby? I heard Warhammer figure collecting has soured recently. As for coins I was hoping to get them cheaper with the mistaken belief people will generally tightening their belt because of fears of being laid off during these tough times but the opposite is true with prices actually going up.
