    How long to tone? Tips?

I only have experience of toning bronze, but an important factor must be common to silver, namely that of temperature. I have a lamp that's on a lot, with a compact fluorescent lamp in it, mounted base down. If you slide a penny that someone has 'cleaned' in between the glass coils, it's supported by its edges, and sits at a nice temperature, and re-toning is surprisingly fast, and even on both sides of the coin. Acetone first is a good idea.
  2. You know, sometimes, just sometimes, I could slough off all the crap that comes with being an older person nowadays, and just go back to the simpler times when the tales of the wonderful Noggin the Nog was all you wanted....or needed..... Oliver Postgate and Peter Firmin really knew what they were doing....extraordinary people.....

  11. I think the BBC Pips should be released back into the wild....
  12. Just had the pips on FM, Apple laptop time, and Junghans radio controlled clock all agree. Ebay is a 24hr clock version of pacific Time.
  13. I have many examples of strange things going on in this area, with the die suffering damage, causing extra dots on the reverse, in this exact area.

    2023 Royal Mint Unc. sets

Some coin collectors have been collecting rubbish for just as long.....:-)
  15. Speechless...? I am too - didn't even spot it!
  16. This is what I'm thinking, propagation delay plus digital latency. Processing takes time- digital's Achilles Heel.
  17. Pips on FM and time on MacBook the same, as far as I can see. Online BBC pips miles out- still amusing how slow digital is.

    More Pennies

Well done! It's all a bit of a minefield. I still think ( passionately) that the fun in coin collecting is the surprise at the bottom of the 'tin of crap' rather than simply buying from sites or auctions. You will get more fun, more profit, and better stories out of your efforts if you go trawling. Sometimes the stories are the best bit......
