    Ebay's Worst Offerings

  2. Undoubtedly it's a challenge to find nice looking late hammered. But the same could be said for high grade George V silver ... better (by which I mean with eye appeal) pieces are generally snapped up quickly irrespective of reign. However to my mind, price is not always the deciding factor. Luck in finding the 'right' coin is often more difficult than paying for it. Decent Chas I shillings can be had for a fair bit under £100. And I have certainly found I've become more demanding as time has passed. Coins that used to do, now won't and a bit of lop-sidedness or uneven strike will mean I pass over a coin that, five years ago, I would have bought without hesitation. But maybe that's a good thing? Means we are developing a better idea of what is and isn't desirable in a coin. Maybe! .

    Ebay's Worst Offerings

So bad it's almost tempting ...
  4. It's certainly interesting. That part of the legend could easily persuade someone it's genuine. But then the softer areas to the left, the 'rolled edge' near HIB and the file marks on the edge between 4 and 5 o'clock make you go ..'hmmm..' Goes to show how it's not always easy to spot something dodgy. Particularly based on a photo .. .
  5. Do we not get to see a pic then Dave?

    Orders and Decorations

It seems to me that the history behind such items is of major importance for serious collectors. From noticing occasional listings it seems to me that the major interest is in scarce awards (particularly for bravery, such as the Victoria Cross) as one might expect. More common medals and the like sell for relatively little, unless accompanied by additional material which tell the purchaser about the individual to whom the medals were awarded. I for example have no real idea what to do with my Dad's medals (which combining British and Polish awards are a relatively scarce group) or my Grandfather's memorabilia from the ORP Błyskawica (of little interest outside of Poland I expect) ... Which isn't to say that there aren't those who collect any sort of order or decoration (including masonic and civil) in the same way there are coin collectors who aim to find an example from each country or century or whatever. There are 'completists' in any area of collecting after all! I guess masonic regalia is perhaps a separate specialist interest... Either way, I suspect all collectors find others' areas of interest a bit odd! I can't imagine many fans of Beanie Babies see the appeal of old disks of metal people haven't used for years any more than bottle caps or marbles! Each to their own I guess! .

Um ... Does this look a bit dodgy to anyone else? Or is it just me? (Sorry can't do links atm) 321562823917
  9. Are you on an iPad Peck? Just I always have problems with the one at work. With that I can see all of Scott's pictures but very few others, including ones I have posted myself using my laptop! There's just a blank space where the image should be. Also some of my admin abilities which depend on being able to hover over an image or link don't work. Now using my laptop, in the post above I can see Dave's halfcrown without clicking anywhere. It's just there in the post. Though if I did click it would apparently take me to photobucket, as the useful 'hover' feature that seems to be missing from the iPad tells me. I've wondered before what others see when I post an image. Appears that maybe we all see different things, depending on what software we're using? .
  10. No experience with them myself Peter though Dad had several Renaults and was happy with them all. Certainly preferable to insuring the MG anyway! Oddly, when daughter was starting to learn we asked our insurers (Direct Line) about her driving our Skoda. They just said 'no' It's not even the VRS version, just a modest 1.4 TSi wtf? Anyway, she's in France now, so driving is no longer a priority at the mo.

Mmmm ... Thing is that ForgeryNetwork was set up some time ago and so it feels a bit like reinventing the wheel. Plus it needs BNTA member(s) to enter the details. And ... speaking from experience, I and a couple of others from here are already members of an informal network who alert each other about suspect coins via email. It will take time and effort for someone to bring the BNTA database up to speed and perhaps to keep it updated, so perhaps not too surprising nobody has 'volunteered'. And of course, unless it's viewable by the general public the number of people who will see it and benefit will be small ..

    Charles I Tower shillings

LOL It's been interesting to see Dave's journey from relative novice collector to connoisseur! But then I guess we're all somewhat on that path. We start to get more discerning as we learn. Perfectly good coins that showed a type or scarcer variation I now look at and think .."now, if I had back what I spent on that I could put it towards something I really want"! Hence the attempted sales here. And I'm still open to offers ...

??? When I view your Member Profile PWA I don't see any warning points. You have seven 'Likes' from other members though, so I don't think you have anything to worry about! However if something I can't see is appearing and it concerns you then do feel free to take a screenshot and send it to Chris P. Could be a glitch? .

Admins can 'warn' a member for being naughty. Not sure how the points thing works. I think it just comes as part of the forum software. People can also 'like' posts, though I don't now if many use it. I only use the warning system for spammers .. the forums I'm a moderator for it enables me to block a member from making further posts. Those I'm not, a message goes to someone higher up so they can review a thread or posts. I don't think I've ever used it just to tell someone off. We're all adults here and unless something's libellous or directly personal I tend to leave it be. .

    bulk purchase

There are of course things like these: http://www.dnw.co.uk/auctions/catalogue/results.php?auction_id=318&category=British Coins - Lots However it's hardly garage sale prices. And of course, postage from the UK to the USA won't be cheap ... I'm wondering if your best bet might be pawn shops/ jewellers? Though most items are likely to be well circulated you might just be lucky and prices are more likely to be based on metal value than numismatic .. To be honest, I'm not sure you are missing any opportunities. I suspect there just aren't that many either side of the Atlantic, what with people looking out for silver to hoard and coin roll hunting ...

I have better. But that one has the second reverse with the Aberystwyth plumes, so I'd like an upgrade of the first in due course... .

Can Anyone ID this for me?

Groat then. I think halfgroats are closer to the size of a 20p. Cool find btw! .

Can Anyone ID this for me?

Hi Tom. Would help if you could measure the diameter. But though it's not a series I have much experience with my guess would be a groat (London issue) Henry VII possibly? Mint mark looks like ... cross over rose? Though those wouldn't be right for Bust IIIc, which is what it looks like to me ... Hopefully someone more experienced will now chip in! .

hi all is this a die crack in my 1855 sixpence? thanks

Try here: http://www.predecimal.com/forum/topic/7880-posting-pics/ My impression is that more US collectors are interested in 'error' coins than UK ones. Though off-metal strikes and coins that have been mint damaged do have a following, natural degradation of the dies seems to very much depend on which denomination and reign we're talking about. .

    bulk purchase

Welcome dz. Can't say I've ever bought in 'bulk' before, although I have got an occasional mixed lot from an auction, it's been for one coin I particularly wanted, so I can't speak from experience. However I would imagine that most 'accumulations' such as biscuit tins full of coins at auction will have been cherry picked, but maybe some of the others here can give their views. Perhaps garage sales will have more potential, but most people are on the look out for a bit of cash these days and anything shiny and/or old will attract attention and again likely get picked out IMHO. As to double florins and crowns, I'd guess you'd need to be very lucky to find those in a mix of coins even here in Britain. Though I could be wrong! .

LOL Don't tempt me! However that would not help me amass my first £million. Which I am sure I shall need if I am to buy that entire collection of prime quality Tower shillings coming up for sale any day now.
  23. Do you mean this Chris? See here: http://www.theopticalvisionsite.com/glossary/eye-need-to-know-where-did-rx-come-from/#.VEKasctwbDc More commonly used in medical circles to represent "prescription". Wikipedia has an entry under Medical prescription, which mentions the Unicode and HTML for the symbol, but I don't know how to get code to work in a post so had to link to the above image. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Medical_prescription As to it being used in numismatic circles, assuming we're talking about the same thing, I wasn't aware of that. It doesn't appear in anything I have, though my literature only goes back to 1918. A guess? Someone looked through available symbols and found the one closest to Rv .

Another photo of #3, S.2791 Sharp E1/2 Ex Noble Sale 77 Nov 04 Lot 788 Again, I will consider offers. Nothing ventured, nothing gained as they say ... And in case anyone was interested, I've decided to keep #1 for now so that's no longer available. Thanks!

S.2789 Sharp D4/1 Privy mark Harp (21 Jun 1632-11 Jul 1633) was originally thought to be rare with this bust but is probably just scarce. £70 BIN or make me an offer!
