1907 pennies are notorious for weak strikes. It's technically BU but the reverse is so weakly struck that to say "UNC Details" is just a joke! It's UNC with VF details on the reverse (No, it hasn't been cleaned - it's just a weak strike). I'd buy coins like that for £4 all day long, thanks!

Reverse E is the 1910 die, just with a 1909 date. If that helps - probably not! -

So, did you get as far as Step 9 in my instructions, VS? If you did, and you can click on the thumbnail after the photo is uploaded, is there an Image Links section to the right of the picture of the coin? If there's no Direct Link box, there should be an Update Link Options you can click, in the Image Links section. This will take you to the albums page of your account settings. Two things to check here: 1) Look down till you see a list of checkboxes under the Links heading. Make sure that Direct Link is checked. 2) Scroll down further and make sure that Easy Linking Mode is turned on. Then hit Save. With these options turned on, your Photobucket setup should be the same as mine! Then you can resume the original instructions from Step 10 onwards. It might seem complicated, but that's only because I have spelled out every single mouse click. Once you've followed it through it won't seem that complex at all! -

Firstly, you will need to register with PhotoBucket. Once you have done that you will need to login and then you can 'upload' photos from your PC to your online library. Once you have the photos in your online library, selecting one - you will see the links generated for you by PhotoBucket. Click on the 'IMG code' link and the link will be copied into the paste buffer - you can then paste it into a forum post using <Ctrl>v or using <right click>Paste. If you want to check whether it works, use the 'preview post' button before you press 'add reply'. Ha ha - a lot more concise than mine, Nick! -

Right, easy to follow steps... 1) You have a Photobucket account, yes? 2) Log in to it. 3) Don't worry about folders in Photobucket just yet - that'll come later. The root of your Photobucket account is called Library 4) Hit the word Upload at the top of the screen, with a little green arrow next to it. 5) Make sure Upload to... is set to Library. It should be, but just to be sure 6) In the big white box, hit the button marked Browse Files 7) Find you pic on your computer and select Open 8) Wait for the progress bar, and then wait for the correct thumbnail to appear below. 9) Click the thumbnail 10) On the right you'll see a Direct Link box, with an http:// address in it 11) A single click on that address should make it turn Yellow, with the word Copied. 12) Come home to the forum 13) In a New Post or Reply, find the little Picture Icon a couple to the right of the yellow smiley at the top - Insert Image should pop up when you hover over it 14) Left Click it, and ten right-click in the Image URL box, and choose Paste. Then hit the Insert Image button Save the post like normal and there it is! -

Same as you Tom, but it would be kind of fun to put together a B collection, just in case. When I started I put aside an example of any coin I considered a perfect UNC (20th century stuff, obviously!), and called it The Perfection Collection, effectively relegating everything else to B status. That didn't last long, of course, as I needed the stock.

eBay - Make an Offer - Please explain ?
declanwmagee replied to Colin88's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
Hi Colin First of all, I do apologise for hijacking your website thread! I use Buy it Now or Best Offer for most of the coins I sell on eBay and I do come across this sort of thing quite regularly. I suppose watchers will have noticed that it didn't sell and assume that you must be desperate to get rid of it. Each one of your 5 could be a potential sale though, so I'd engage them in conversation and if you do agree a price, bang it back up on Best Offer and invite them to use the functionality built-in. eBay can be a bit funny about people negotiating privately, protective of their fees, so if you do negotiate offline, do it through normal email, rather than through the eBay messaging system. -

Building a website for your coins
declanwmagee replied to Colin88's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
Well there's a load of design ideas in about 16 hours, Greg! To summarise: 1) Home Page: an array of coin cabinets (have a look at the Peter Nichols selection to see what we mean by coin cabinet), each labelled with a denomination and linked to... 2) A page for each denomination that looks suspiciously like this. Little virtual drawers for each group in the denomination cabinet. Groups might be Reign, or Portions of a reign, whatever best suits that denomination. Clicking on a drawer links to... 3) The coins. We could break it down further: a page per year for instance, with all the varieties, proofs, patterns etc from each year, but I fear the more layers we have the more unwieldy and complex to navigate it gets. Three layers (cabinet, drawer, coins) seems like a nice simple structure and matches the reality of a coin cabinet - you don't have drawers within drawers, as a rule. Standard size and background from the start, I suggest. Adopting a standard once there's a lot of coins in it would be a pain. I'll volunteer to do the donkey work on the photos as they come in, for starters. What do you think, Greg? Think it's do-able? -

Well thank you for that, Accumulator! Your contribution to the idea is already significant...and if we could pinch your brass tray handles that would be even better! -

That's a good point, Peck - initially we will have to put up with the variations in photographic standards as all the photos will be coming from different sources, so we'd never get the beautiful standardised look of Accumulators. There is a certain amount a curator could do though, even with a scan - standard circular cropping, standard background, standard image size. Whack 'em all on a Photobucket account so we don't have to worry about finding gigabytes of hosting space for photos. -

That's good Dave, I like that! We could model each denomination cabinet on the top of the range Peter Nicholls, if that's not playing fast and loose with his IP... Each cabinet could have a curator - Colin or Peter for Farthings, Rob for Halfpennies, Accumulator for Pennies (just as a for-instance, chaps, you understand!) -

Well, there's a stroke of luck! How about thumbnails on a grid? I'd be happy to draw the grid... On second thoughts, division by denomination might suit most people here a little better. Seems to be a lot of denomination collectors here. Navigation is everything! -

Why don't we build one that could display the Forum's virtual collection - i.e. populate it with the best example of a particular coin that any one of us can come up with. Each coin could have a virtual ticket saying whose it really is, and then when people show their new acquisitions, they could upgrade the existing if they're better. and we could argue about which is the better coin, and should go into the virtual collection. -
Ha! I emailed the seller and offered to help him learn to do his own. No reply yet, of course. I imagine he'd be looking for sarcasm but there wasn't any, really. Well, perhaps a little.

Variety or Error
declanwmagee replied to Benny who's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
Do you think someone decided not to put the hearts on? Or forgot? I believe the thinking is that someone forgot, and around half of them had been minted before someone noticed the error ... so error or variety? I suppose it would have to be an error then! A common-ish one, perhaps, but an error all the same. Imagine if half the 20ps in whatever year it was had been undated. Would it have then become a variety, or remained as an error? Are the numbers involved important, or just the intention?
