I think it might be an optical illusion - because the exergue narrows, the 9 looks smaller. Has to be - deliberately smaller to fit further right upsets too many assumptions about why the date is wide...

Well now, looks like it to me. It's not even the same 9 ! I wonder if that's common - the further right the number is, the smaller it would have to be to squeeze under the exergue. If the accidental theory is to continue to hold water, we can't have them making design changes to allow for wide dates. Doesn't make any sense...

my pension is predecimal! The coin collection is the nearest we'll ever have to one of those, and I challenge any financial adviser to compare capital growth graphs with me! Since 2007... I bought an endowment once and remember being shown graphs that purported to show how the market could never ever go down.

I still don't use banks, unless you count PayPal, and I always spend what's in there, on coins, as fast as it comes in. We do have a building society account to cash the odd cheque we get, but again, nothing gets stored there. Even now we have bills to pay in our dream cottage, we have managed to sort everything like Council tax, electric and internet with monthly cash payments at the Post Office. The only thing we have to pay by cheque is the car insurance, so it's a once a year visit to the Building Society with a roll of those wicked banknotes. Over the counter, they write a cheque, into an envelope and off the insurance people. I am one of those dodgy tradesmen! So it is possible, and the more of us refuse to participate, the more power they lose. It is the moral imperative of every free man not to give your power away!

I guess there could be an error of .2% without offending the mathematicians. In cases of doubt, for example where I do not have the coin in hand I ignore the data. I've had a right good cull of my stupid database recently, so I've got the number of fields down to 69 for an individual coin. The lookup table that holds information about all the possible coins I could get is still a bit out of hand though: 148 fields
