Coins you've never seen
declanwmagee replied to DaveG38's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
I don't think it does, Gary. Obverse 1 & 2a do, but not obverse 2 for 1903. See Gouby's website. Reading Gouby's site I take "1903 to 1906 - 3 Obverse dies" to mean that it does. So is the general concensus that it doesn't Mr Groom's book only refers to 1 and 2a - not straight Obv 2 -

A 20th centiry selection - there's plenty more! 1964 and 1965 scarcer type sixpences F474 1956 ha'penny F437 1940 ha'penny 1937 1+B silver 3d several of the 1920-1923 big silver varieties (but that's probably because I haven't been looking hard enough for them.) 1915 close TT farthing 1 each of 1913 and 1908 penny varieties I did manage to score my first unconfirmed Davies number though: D.751 1870 gothic florin. Hasn't arrived yet, but at least it shows that some of them do exist. -
Raising 150 million from the ocean

If you can bear (no pun intended!) to hang on to it through the coming big dip, I'd imagine some spectacular flights to safety once the Euro disintegrates and the US defaults. Watch out for the incoming CorpGov restrictions though - did anyone else see this? Remember the gold confiscations in 1933? -

You really ought to do this for a living, Dave, you're clearly good at it...I'm chuffed if I make a tenner on most of the coins I sell. -

erm...£68...for a 1903 halfcrown. I suppose that makes me an average pleb on eBay -
I've actually bought a few coins from this seller and have been quite happy.Just ignore the grade and buy the coin. They certainly do come well packaged I have too, and have been similarly satisfied. Not delighted, but satisfied. It'd be nice if he took the photos before slabbing them, but I've opened them all and got rid of the slabs. Only because I don't have a nice and tidy way of storing slabs, mind. If I had more slabbed coins, and had sorted out the storage, I'd have kept the slabs but ditched the labels. You don't have to destroy his type to open them.

selling off large collection of coins
declanwmagee replied to collywolly11's topic in Items For Sale
Welcome Colin! I bought a coin from you the other day - an upgrade for my 1889 Double Florin, and was very pleased with it. Just thought I'd vouch for you, 'cos I'm good like that. Nice to see you here. Declan -

1797 Cartwheel penny
declanwmagee replied to declanwmagee's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
The tie looks like it's pointing down to me. The 11 leaves plate at the back of Peck looks entirely different, and points outwards, as Rob points out... It also looks identical to my example, except it's better, but it's a 10-leaf tie. -

declanwmagee replied to scott's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
You just can't, Scott, if they're too worn. Take 1889 for instance. You have to be able to see the leaves of the 4th group to see if one of them is missing or present. Otherwise they'll all be missing! -
Sell Gold Online!
declanwmagee replied to TomGoodheart's topic in Nothing whatsoever to do with coins area!
Not I! I got it from a chap called George Ure who does a very interesting daily blog on the way the world is, with a macroeconomic bias. He uses it all the time. Urbansurvival.com if anyone's interested. I bet that FT journo reads him! -

So let's see, what have we got to look forward to... More riots Hunger strikes in Ireland Another pointless war a Miner's strike the Battle of the Beanfield (Dale Farm?) Deregulation of the Financial Industry More riots a nuclear disaster Stock market crash the disintegration of a superpower and the Poll Tax to wrap up the decade... I think it was Mark Twain who said History doesn't repeat itself, but it always rhymes. What I can't understand is the the powers that be not banning all these loan firms, ambulance chasing, miss selling etc and actually spin doctoring UK products. Everything is being produced in Asia from computors to pencils and shipped into the UK in vast containers. The French would be blocking the ports. Even Dr Martens and Dyson cleaners are being manufactured in the far east. There will be more riots because the masses are envying their neighbours. The financial industry is bent but this has always been the case its a natural human trait. OK lets bring back the 80's.In the early 80's I was single,no £ pressure,Ipswich Town were Englands best team .I had lads holidays I had a motorbike,I could abuse my body and still get down the pub the next lunchtime....it wasn't all bad. I'm afraid the powers that be ARE the loan firms, insurance companies, manufacturers and importers, and the masses are farmed for their envy and subsequently, their debt. The masses are of no use to the PTB unless they are consuming, preferably on borrowed money. Government is merely the legislative arm of the financial industry. -
English Silver Coins
declanwmagee replied to Andrewlincs's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
LOL. If one of them was much scarcer than the other, THEN I'd be interested - that's my pathology! (It's why 1937 micro-varieties leave me entirely cold) As you can imagine, Mr Grooms excellent books left my approaching completeness 20th century decidedly holey. As for 1937, I even had to get both brass 3ds. I did give up on the two Davies numbers for the silver 3d though. Anyone got a 1+B? Or seen one? GaryD? -

For those of us purist collectors, an easy test would be great so we could fill a gap, regardless of value. If there's two kinds, I've got to have both. It's pathological. -
They are, but you can get the 9 coin plastic set which ALL the 1953 pennies came from for about the same, so spend a tenner on of those, not a penny on its own.
-
Hollow neck 2+A to the Left (Davies 1791) Flat neck 3+A to the Right (Davies 1792) see the difference? 3+A is scarcer...get into microvarieties - it's the last area you can still do proper treasure hunting...

I too have a load of crap duplicates that i've accumulated over the years, but have always been nervous about selling on Ebay, Is it better to list everything indvividually or make them into small lots that fit into standard postage rates? maybe a job for winter, when I can't get into the garden David get 'em listed, David! One at a time, 99p starts. If you think it's not good enough, think again. I've sold 26 1967 pennies in the last 5 years! Including postage, that's £40, or a decent Double Florin - that's the way I think about the junk that does sell - all you're doing is converting it to nicer coins. Imagine walking into a dealers shop and offering him 26 1967 pennies for that near EF Roman I 4/- he has for sale...!
-
Looks like I must have been eliminated in the past. Seriously though, you can see why people list junk - if it is going to sell anywhere, it is on ebay. Before I stopped selling on ebay a few years ago I listed a fairly low grade 1882/1H 1d, say no better than nVF. It made nearly £60 despite being described as such. An 1846 1d, good fine at best, made £66 despite my feeling embarassed to even consider listing it. Flat discs that sell for £1 - WHY?? A pair of QEII crowns sold. They may have been mint state, but when you sell these you think the good times will never end and it gives an incentive to try even harder. Yes, like gold, I filter out the stuff that's out of my league too... Personally I think it's fantastic that people can sell any old junk. The other side of the coin is that people can start collecting at any lowly level. We all started somewhere, and it's purely down to ebay that my own collection has advanced in leaps and bounds. Only 5 years ago or so, the stuff I'm buying now would have been dream coins.
-
Oops - thanks Peter! I don't need to see my own listings...
-
All sent, Gents. I'm sure if their stuff isn't good enough for me, it won't be good enough for you 3 either... In addition to ignoring certain sellers, I put this in the search bar at the top too, so even more junk (& gold!) gets eliminated -1967 -197* -198* -199* -200* -201* -olympic -holed -counterfeit -enamelled -framed -token -damaged -"two pounds" -gibraltar -decimal -proof -pattern -mother -wedding -churchill -£5 -£2 -diana -sovereign -"Isle of Man" -gold -keyring -alderney -jersey -guernsey -20p -50p -commemorative -cufflinks

Do your normal search, Peter, and look in the filters area on the left of the screen. Under "Seller", hit Specifiy Sellers A box will pop up. Check the box marked "only show items from", change the drop down to "Exclude", and paste in the names of those you want to ignore, separated by commas. Then hit Go to close the box, and click Save Search at the top of the page. I call mine "No Junk sellers", and my ignore list is enormous. I'm quite happy to share it if you want... Yes please! D'you think it would be OK in open forum, or should I PM? Seeing as it's real people an' all....
