    Una Climbing

Hear hear Chris! I'm sure we're all tired of hearing the powerless getting the blame.
  3. Ring 'em up, Rob! That's what you pay 'em for. I'm always bothering mine.
  4. I remember seeing that second picture (or similar) in a magazine or something when I was a child, and thinking "oh, so that's how computers are made, I'll make one for my bike." So I did. It didn't do anything, but my Raleigh Commando had a computer just like that.
  5. In 1999, in a previous life I was an IT bod, I bought 500GB of disk space for my company. Took up half an airconditioned server room and cost £220,000. This laptop's got twice that.
  6. Happy Crimbo everyone. Don't crack your last can till morning.
  7. Hurrah! Mr Scruff and Carlsberg Special Brew. Ranks right up there with the best.

    Ebay Global shite programme

They've broken the exclude by seller functionality too, which most of you will remember I use heavily. After a few weeks hassling them about it, they have admitted it is a real bug, and issued me with a little ticket number, but no sign of a fix yet.

    1914 florin

You are right to identify the later coins as having larger teeth, and the changeover did take place in 1914, but I find it a lot easier to use pointings as they are independent of wear and require less judgement to come to an identification. If you are interested in this level of varieties, I cannot recommend Dave Groom's books strongly enough... 1914 florins have three reverses: Rev C (1913-1914) Crown on harp's shield points at a bead N of FLORIN closer to shield L of FLORIN between beads F of FLORIN below L smaller beads Rev D (1914 only) Crown on harp's shield points at a bead N of FLORIN equidistant between shield & beads L of FLORIN between beads F of FLORIN below L smaller beads Scarcest Rev E (1914-1924) Crown on harp's shield between beads N of FLORIN very close to shield L of FLORIN points at a bead F of FLORIN level with L larger beads Commonest hope that's helpful!
  10. Get close to them with a loupe, don't try and count them, just check whether they're incuse or raised!
  11. Do you think they thought as deeply as we do about the changes that they have made? Or are we reading too much into them?
  12. It's never too late to get into Carlsberg Special Brew, Peck!
  13. I must say though Peter, now I've got such luxuries as hot running water, I wouldn't be without them again. Certain things I'll never get back into, like TV, but certain things I just have to have now! brrrr....chilly memories!

    selling big lot of coins

Sorry Morpheus! No irony intended, honestly, but the world is so awash with that sort of thing, you'd be doing everyone a favour by getting them into the melting pot...really.

You bought it from a coin shop???
  21. Ooh that fair brought a tear to my eye, Garrett! Talk about paying it forward. Warm glows all round, I reckon. Aren't coinies great?

    coin grade

As a rule of thumb John, divide by two as you go down the grades, so F will be half VF, and EF will be twice VF. There are plenty of exceptions, before the rest of you chime in with crazy Bun Penny gradients, but for your purposes, and particularly for silver, that'll do you!
  23. Interesting thread this one. Coins that I sell come from three sources really - eBay, fairs, and auctions. I make good money on those I buy from eBay, and my margins are always squeezed on the coins that I acquired from auctions and fairs. That may be down to my frankly weak haggling skills when I'm face to face, or down to the fact that if I have made the effort to drive to Bracknell I don't want to come home empty handed. None of these confounding variables apply when I'm bidding on eBay, so I do wonder if a coins true value is more likely to be found by looking at eBay prices (achieved, of course!), because if we're thinking about the purity of the transaction, nothing else is involved in an eBay purchase. Just the coin. CCGB (eBay edition). Wouldn't that be interesting?

    auction sites

All the ebay rivals (eBid etc) are a complete waste of time for coins, in my limited experience of them! The places TG mentions, however, are great places to learn as well as to buy.
