    Coin cards for wallets

I am not sure if Hartberger makes the self-seal types in that size, but here in the US, you can get the staple type cardboard holders in 1½" X 1½", which is what the 37mm pockets will hold. (the 2" X 2" fit into the 50mm pockets)

German State of Prussia Friedrich II (the Great), ruler of Prussia from 1740-1786. you have a ½ Friedrich d'or, listed as C#45a in my old catalog. 1 Friedrich d'or was equal to 5 thaler, so yours would be 2½ thalers. 1 Friedrich d'or was 6.65gr of gold, so yours should be 3.32gr. The 'A' on the reverse in the mintmark for Berlin
  4. It is a Norwegian 1 skilling. Information from : 1996 Standard Catalog of World Coin, by Chester Krause and Clifford Mischler. Norway KM#286 1 skilling (120 skilling = 1 speciedaler) mintage of 3,817,000 including coins dated both 1819 and 1820 catalog value is US$3.00 in VG, US$7.00 in F. To the left it should be a larger C with XIV within it, to the right should be Joh. This is the monogram for the Swedish king Carl XIV Johan. Norway was under Danish rule until 1814, when if fell under Swedish rule until independence in 1905.

For those that cannot see Chris' avatar, perhaps you have the option turned off. At the top of the page, click on the "My Controls" link when that page loads, towards the bottom left, click on the "Board Settings" link when that page loads, half ways down, "Do you wish to view members avatars when reading threads?" with a Yes/No option.

I have had a standing request with Chris to let me know next time he comes across the 1972, as I do want to add it.

At risk of sounding pedantic, that should read "every year since 1972". The 1970 and 71 set were issued retrospectively that year. 73-76 all date from 1976. Quite clear really :-) G Yes, you are correct. I should have clarified that Proof sets have been issued "dated" every year since 1971. And that 1970 set is a nice one, too. I only have 2 proof sets, the 1970 and 1971. Last and first, so to speak. And while we are on the subject of Proof sets and Mint sets, no collection would be complete without the "Decimalization Wallet" issued with the 1968 5p & 10p, 1971 ½p, 1p, 2p.

You have to be very careful with the BRM proof sets, especially the earlier ones. The bronze coins tend to tone a lot in these sets. Finding them without toning can sometimes be a challenge. But, if you don't mind toning, then sometimes the sets with toned coins are discounted by dealers. Proof sets have been issued every year since 1971. Blister pack mint sets have been issued since 1982. As you get into it more, you will find that some coins were not released for circulation some years, and the only way to obtain them is by getting the Proof or Mint sets.
  10. Those rings were very common among the US GI's in WWII. With a lot of spare time on their hands, they would use their canteen spoons to literally beat the edges of the coin until it flattened out, then they would use their can-openers to cut out the middle. The UK florins were the perfect size to make a ring out of, and the silver is a nice soft metal to shape. Modern rings are often found from US half dollars, too.

    Ebay

That's been banned now, sellers aren't allowed to do it anymore. I had a mean streak last weekend and was reporting lots of listings who charged a fee. There are still a LOT!! of sellers still claiming to charge extra for PayPal. I have been browsing ebay.uk the last few days, as I sold some coins to a fellow collector, and have a few extra $$ in my PayPal account. Figure I might as well use them now, instead of waiting. hmmm, Chris, guess I should browse your store here, see if anything catches my fancy. btw, I sent you a PM back before the holidays mentioning that I would be looking for a 1972 Proof set. Now I have the funds, do you have one?

    50P commemarative

I meant to say that I would like to get more of the various £2 commems, not more of the DNA coins. From this side, the bronze issues (1-2-5p) are easy to get, the 10p are usually fairly easy, the 20p are out there, but I have to hunt a little to find them, the 50p are virtually non-existant, whether it is the normal Brittania back, or one of the commem. issues (many of mine have come from a few members of this forum), the £1 and up do not ever show up. I have repeatedly told my local dealer that if he finds any £1 in VF or better, I will buy them, and pay extra if it is a year that I don't have, but he has yet to take me up on the offer. A few of the other decimals I am looking for: 5p 1993 10p 1995, 1998, 1999 20p 1985, 1992, 1998, 1999 50p 1999, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004 (normal Brittania backs) £1 everything from 1990-1999, except 1993 and 1996.

    Ebay

Only had around 700 transactions on eBay. Got a few gems, a few dogs, and a lot of decent deals. As the others have said, enter cautiously, and examine everything carefully. Be especially aware of bad photos and shipping charges. One peeve of mine is that you British can actually get away with charging a fee to use PayPal. (eBay USA does not allow this) I have passed on many British coins from British sellers because once I figure in the postage, and then tack on an extra 5% for PayPal fees, it just isn't a fair deal. Of course, the weakness of the US$ against the UK£ doesn't help me much, either.

    1. Finland, 1 penni, copper, mintage for 1968 73 million, worth up to US$1 in UNC. (KM#44) 2. Does indeed sound Greek. What is the year of it??
  16. somewhere in the vicinity of 3500 coins, but haven't gotten an accurate count in quite a while. and that is down from the almost 9000 that I did have, before I "refined" my collection last year. I imagine that another re-structuring will happen sometime this year, but that will probably only eliminate another 1000 or so.

    Bah

You are half right. Italian Somaliland (southern Somalia) was united with British Somaliland (northern Somalia) to form the nation of Somalia in 1960. In the 1990's north Somalia declared itself the independent Republic of Somaliland, although it is not recognized by anyone. By issuing coins with British rulers, the official government of Somalia may be trying to win more influence with the outside world to help control the break-away republic in the north. Get the British to support Somalia, and the former British colony of Somaliland looses leverage in it's battle for freedom.

Glad you got that left one figured out.
  20. How do you tell the difference?? I have 2 of them. One is obviously the bright finish. The other one is darker, but how can I tell if that is just toning/tarnishing, or if it is mint darkened??
  21. okay, I have a few very low grade older British coins I have been trying to at least narrow down to type, even if I can't get a date off it. so far, I have a 1797 Cartwheel penny (#3032), a George III half-penny (#3036), a George II farthing (#2947), and one more that I am clueless on. size: slightly smaller than a copper half-penny. obv: bust, facing right, not draped. only legends readable is "George" "I" yes, it says George, not Georgius or Georgivs, etc. may be more roman numerals, but only a single "I" is confirmable. rev: extremely worn, but almost appears to be the Irish harp. I have the coin soaking in olive oil to see if maybe some more highlights will show up. I thought at first that this might be a Hibernia half-penny, but my limited resources show that all of them have the Georgius legend. my next thought is that it might be a token, but that is uncharted territory for me. any clue to what coin/token carries the "George" legend??
  22. Your coin is indeed from the Dutch East Indies (now called Indonesia.) It is a 1 duit coin (8 duits=1 stuiver, 20 stuiver=1 gulden). These were issued throughout the 1700's and early 1800's by several of the provincial mints of the Netherlands. Your particular coin bears the arms of the Utrecht province, which is the most common of the types known. Although dated 1790, it was actually struck between 1827-1843. Being the most common, and also one of the highest mintages, it's value is minimal, perhaps £1-2 at best. Definitely a nice piece, all the same. I assume that it is a star above the VOC?
  23. I would recommend directing this query to the people at Coneca, http://conecaonline.org/index.html These are the error specialists for US coins.

    decimal coinage

Are there any web-sites that you can direct me to for more information on decimal coinage?? I already have Tony Clayton's site bookmarked, so I know about that one. I would love to find a discussion area for the decimal coins, although I doubt one exists. But, no harm in asking, is there?
