I DO buy from E-bay, but only from the reputable sellers - who always provide good quality pictures. I can understand why online sites don't provide pictures for all coins - it would be a mammoth task. But there's no excuse for not providing pictures for the expensive stuff. Colin Cooks seems to have a policy of providing pictures for all coins priced over a certain limit and this seems reasonable. I wouldn't buy online from anyone who didn't offer a return policy.

I've never been there (planning a trip in September), but I imagine that Michael Gouby's shop http://www.michael-coins.co.uk/shop.htm will be worth a visit

Hi bash_8 I'm afraid that in reasonable condition it's not really worth more than a few pence. (Over 86 million were made.) It would need to be in very fine condition to be worth £1. In uncirculated condition with full lustre it would go for around £35 Hope this helps.

I would rather do Farthings and Fractions now chris if thats ok ...I can do them in this order: I = Quater Farthings II = Third Farthings III = Half Farthings IV = Farthings ...will you want farthing tokens? (i doubt so) I'm happy to tackle pennies on my own. Chris, is there some way you can make the database available on-line, or perhaps provide each of us with an electronic copy of the relevant sections? That would make it easy to see which prices we've got and which are outstanding.

That's a very good point. I've been logging those pennies that've caught my interest and those have tended to be towards the top end.

I AM sadly old enough to remember. Reagan made Bush look like Einstein. For 8 years the US nuclear arsenal was in the hands of someone who gave the dictinct impression of not knowing which day of the week it was. Remember the Iran-contra affair where he has to finally admit he did wrong 'My heart tells me I did not - the facts say different' If 9/11 had happened here I think we would all feel very differently about it. Waiting until terrorists or rogue states carry out an even bigger atrocity would be a gross dereliction of duty. Doing so may sometimes be unpopular with those who don't want to face the reality of responsibility - but that's what real leadership is all about. Just doing what opinion polls suggest is easy, weak and ultimately doomed. The real problem with the US response is that it appears to be bereft of foresight and subtlety.

Whilst I'm sad he's dead and whilst as a person he may have had many admirable qualities, I'm afraid that to call him one of the best Presidents just beggars belief.

Thanks Chris, I'd gladly trade the 'noted' for a few more varieties. I can't really see the point of the noted prices. Having more varieties listed would be an important differentiator compared to other catalogues.

Gouby is the best identification guide for pennies

I'm pretty sure that's NOT the high tide variety. It's the sea level on the right that counts & it's way below where the legs cross. On the high tide variety it's just below that point. Also on the high-tide variety the base of the shield is nearly in contact with the border teeth. In this case it's not.

Oh dear. I've seen other items from the same people, all ridiculously graded. And what do they mean by guaranteeing that the one you'll get is better than the one in the picture? At least they didn't add - 'A must for the serious collector' - which always annoys me because it never is.
