Just noticed the following auction on ebay. If it is genuine, the seller could end up parting with his coin for pennies on the dollar (or in this case on the pound). I can't help but wonder if it is simply plated in some way. Any opinions? Ebay "Trial" Halfpenny

I can't believe that no one has made mention of this yet (news of it was posted on the PCGS forum some time ago), but Neil Paisley of Colin Cooke will be featuring a fine collection of pennies for sale. My understanding is that the bidding procedure will be similar to that used in the sale of Colin Cooke's farthing collection. Hopefully we'll all soon get to see these coins. Didn't the Colin Adams sale also have a 1933 Lavrillier pattern penny, which was featured on the cover of the catalogue?

Peter...Coin collecting is a great hobby and can turn out to be a great investment and thus supplement one's pension, but bear in mind that prices for many coins have sharply increased in recent years and it should not come as a surprise if at some point, the market heads the other way.

I ran across this coin on the internet today. It claims to be a 1936 proof penny. It certainly does not appear to be one. 1936 "proof" penny

If this piece were counterfeit, it is likely contemporary, and collectible thus. I have Scottish counterfeits from the time and they are more interesting than the authentic coins. Contemporary counterfeits are highly collectible, but I don't think that this is one of them.

Rob... Everyone can and does collect as they choose. What is being questioned here is the wisdom of paying an extraordinary sum of money for piece of plastic without which the coin would be worth little if anything above face value.

Precisely, but keep in mind that not all of us American collectors are taken in by this nonsense.
