Rather than just becoming a historical curiosity, it's entirely possible that CGS slabs could become a collectible in their own right... link ...on the other hand - I wouldn't count on it.

This all brings to mind the definition I once read of an optimist... From: More One Liners, Jokes and Gags By Grant Tucker London: The Robson Press 2013 An optimist is someone who falls off the Empire State Building, and after fifty floors says,’So far so good!’ -
Not for the Bargain Hunters: Atlas Numismatics
Coppers replied to VickySilver's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
I recall last year I was the under-bidder on a rare proof penny. At the time I figured that another collector simply wanted the coin more than I did. It turns out that it was not another collector as shortly thereafter the coin appeared for sale on the Atlas site. -

Filled die? This is from Colin's About Farthings site... [H] Filled Dies - Occur when the recessed areas become filled with debris. the debris can be grease, pieces from previous planchets, or any other foreign body. This error generally affects the lettering and datal figures, giving the appearance that a letter or number is missing. This error can also affect other areas in extreme circumstances. -

Not 100% certain on this, so you had best wait for someone more expert than I to respond, but it looks as if it might be the result of a die cap, where an earlier strike stuck to the reverse die. Subsequent coins struck using the same pair of dies would turn out to be brockages with clear incuse image of the obverse on the reverse of the coin struck. As more and more coins are struck the die cap flattens out and you end up with a more or less blank reverse with a rather unclear mushy image of the obverse similar to your father's coin..

Thank goodness that we on the other side of the Atlantic don't have to deal with " the media's obsession with personalities rather than the issues". -
Spotted this in the upcoming Lockdale's auction. 1860 penny Whoever wins it will likely end up paying far less than it's consignor.
