Indeed - there wouldn't have been any point minting a few pennies for that purpose unless they were to make up a set!

It seems that criticism of Putin obviously affects the inner ear leading to a loss of ability to balance properly...

Ditto to the "I'm impressed". But the two coins are so similar that I'd say they probably must have come from the same location? Too much of a coincidence otherwise?

Whatever happened to Accumulator?

there's an interesting (apparently) certificate authenticating the coin among the pictures. It COULD be genuine? If it is, then it could well fetch £100k or thereabouts. IF... however, the problem is that a Viking king Eric in the north is not necessarily Bloodaxe - Eric was a common name.

There will always be a generation of collectors - some people buy vinyl records because they prefer that format, some buy just because they collect them as items, and there will be an overlap of both; among the collectors there is intense interest in - for example - matrix numbers that indicate the first pressing. Also, postcard collectors are thriving though not many still send postcards. I don't think we need to worry just yet.

The tetradrachm was widely used ultimately - the entire Hellenic world as ruled by Alexander, and also Classical Egytp? I can't give you more information about this particular one except to say that Herakles on the obverse and an eagle on the reverse was a fairly common design. If I could read the Greek legend more easily I'd transcribe it for you. This one is quite similar - a Ptolemy tetrad... https://www.the-saleroom.com/en-gb/auction-catalogues/bishopandmiller/catalogue-id-bishop10063/lot-ae6296b4-5623-44e9-a317-a8b200fe66c2 -
Yes, if that was done much better, and was cheaper - I'd be up for it! It's true - I haven't left a gap, and if I DID buy a clever fake, I'd have to move everything along one... I wouldn't class a Taylor restrike as a fake - they're in a class of their own. As you and Rob say, he used original dies, warts and all, and sometimes in impossible pairings. It's almost as if the ghost of Boulton had come back to life.

No, but I'm never going to have a genuine 1933; however, if I'm collecting a complete date run of that series, a convincing fake carefully crafted from a genuine penny would fill a gap. Ah. I'm happy to offer £50 for that one! I was thinking of one in VF or better I think there's 3 factors: 1. objective i.e. absolute number minted 2. being recognisable - which explains why H & KN pennies (for example) are more in demand than minor varieties of bun pennies 3. popularity, which as you say is a product of marketing to some extent; either way coins can come into fashion a drop out again.

I can well understand that, and feel something similar. Having said that, I'd be willing to pay up to £300 for a convincing fake made from a genuine penny of that series.

24 Hours in Police Custody

Saccoulas drove negligently, carelessly, and caused a death. I personally believe her punishment should have been more severe, but the whole diplomacy/immunity issue stinks. As to White, he didn't have intent to kill, but the jury decided he had intent to cause harm by driving dangerously. Sorry, but that's the law whether you like it or not. "you can rest assured it will be a majority" - I have no doubt that within the community in which you move and have your being, that is the case. But I move in a different community that thinks different. -

Better tonight, but we'll see... My answer to your point is something I've thought about over the last 24 hours, though I see that you and Larry have covered it already. However, let me say what I have been thinking: Anne Secoulas drove without due care and attention (not dangerously, on reflection, as she drove on the wrong side of the road for a stretch but obviously not deliberately); she intended no harm to anyone but due to her carelessness a motorcyclist was killed. I believe that the suspended prison sentence was in part because she effectively 'fled' back to the States, which was a terrible thing to do, she should have stayed and faced the music. Contrast this with White's intent: he was driving dangerously in pursuit of the burglars, and could have caused more harm than he did; I'm not saying he didn't have a reason that was provoked by the original crime, but as everyone knows, two wrongs don't make a right. What is the issue I think we all agree on, is that the burglars didn't suffer a legislative punishment fitting the crime. That's the injustice here, not the punishment dished out to White. But as you and Larry have discussed to the Nth degree : intent is everything under the law. It's what differentiates murder from manslaughter to take the most extreme case. -

Yes, but hers was a case of dangerous driving - she'd strayed onto the wrong side of the road - she wasn't chasing burglars. The relatives all seem to think justice was done (I think there was too much politics in that case). I don't have the energy to contact the authors, my life is a constant battle against fatigue. I'll leave this for another 24 hours, hopefully I'll be less tired then. -

Not surprising as they are largely an invention of the right - especially the right wing press and a large % of their readers. The same press and readership who invented the myth that left wing councils had banned the word "black" in schools, in the 80s. -

An interesting read. My initial remarks: 1. The judge who said it took courage to be a burglar was very foolish and rightly slapped down, not least by Cameron. However, he doesn't seem even remotely representative of his profession. If most judges said - or thought - as he did, the Mail would burst a blood vessel. 2. What was the TV programme 85% of whose viewers came out in support of Tony Martin? Not only "what", but "when"? That case was a cause celebre for a time until... 3. ...the facts about the rather unpleasant Martin came out - that he was lying in wait for burglars, that he'd laid a booby trap, and the one he killed was a 16-yr-old boy shot in the back as he was trying to flee. Ok, I do accept that his conviction was reduced to one of manslaughter but he still had to serve some years in prison. White was sentenced to 22 months which does seem excessive in the circumstances, but suppose he'd killed one of the burglars as a result of the car chase - would you then say he still shouldn't do any time? -

The majority of Daily Mail readers certainly, and similar organs. But where is your evidence that the majority of the public believes this? But this is already the case! All judges - when sentencing - have access to the perp's previous, and sentence accordingly. A first time offender (except for the most serious crimes like murder, kidnap, terrorism, etc) gets a lesser sentence than someone with a list of previous convictions. That's how sentencing guidelines work. -

If you believe that the judiciary take sides the way you are suggesting, that's extremely worrying. Worrying that you actually believe that, I mean. And you believing that's the majority view is even more worrying. -

That's nothing to do with the police. If his defence barrister proposed that he "lost control on a bend" during the trial, it would be up to a jury whether they believed that or not - in this case they obviously didn't. Juries can make the wrong decision sometimes, but that's the justice system we have. -

They should have gone after both. (I'm not sure I see the point of the "victim blaming" remark). -
Does anyone have an idea of how many are 'out there'? Presumably more - though perhaps not many more - than the 1933, which would make it one of rarest and most desirable 20th century pennies (excluding the 1920, 1952, and 1954 which - being presumed singletons - are beyond the reach of the fattest purse).

I should have added: any prisoner released halfway isn't truly 'free' - they're on licence, and one single blot on their behaviour (anything) and they're back inside to serve out the full term. -
Bid of only £25 for those 3 beauties? Someone was 'having a laugh'.
