    1679 Crown - Is this 3rd or 4th bust?

Agreed. It's only the grade assigned to the obverse I have issues with. But it is problem-free and if you like it that's the main thing.

    1679 Crown - Is this 3rd or 4th bust?

The reverse is much better - definitely not far off VF

    1679 Crown - Is this 3rd or 4th bust?

This one is at least (genuine) VF: https://www.dnw.co.uk/auction-archive/lot-archive/lot.php?lot_uid=366284 and it sold for £400, which seems right!

    1679 Crown - Is this 3rd or 4th bust?

I think that was just sloppiness on DNW's part - note that it sold for much less than estimate. Also, I think the grades listed in the Spink Standard Catalogue are 'old school', especially when you compare the values listed with average sale prices or with other price guides.

    1679 Crown - Is this 3rd or 4th bust?

Yes - it was in a Warwick lot along with a Charles II and an Anne crown (both F or F+).
  6. It's mentioned in that fascinating BNJ article on early bun pennies we were linked to recently. There are mentions of the work he did at home (he had the equipment apparently) and then took into the RM . Though this is only a small bit of the diary which apparently is mostly domestic.

Different monarch but still early milled - this is VF:

    Coins for 70th Jubilee

There again, the blue '1st decimal' wallet sold for... ?6/-? (30p). They now struggle to make £1 !

    Coins for 70th Jubilee

Yes - the only 1950s penny I found as a schoolboy was a VF 1953. It could only have come from a plastic set. Having said that, over a million were issued so there must still be quite large number around. The real mystery is why they were valued so highly in the late 60s. Mind you, that was also true of all 1953 issues back then - yes, I know it was a one-year obverse, but it was also the first year of the reign so many were put aside and survived in UNC.

    Coins for 70th Jubilee

About the same as they sold for in 1969!

    New Years Revolutions?

He's not too impressed with you, I understand
  13. LMAO. Who in their right minds would want to upgrade that?!!!!
  14. Prototype model of Concorde. But the stone proved too heavy to take off.

1992 £1 error with Flax reverse

It would have to be a black market? Those things are illegal!

    Prove it's a proof !!!

I'd certainly take a chance on it for £80 - it's a very nice coin!

1992 £1 error with Flax reverse

There were hundreds of 000s of £1 forgeries around before they changed the design. I found a few but didn't bother to keep them.

    Prove it's a proof !!!

For me, that 1859 is a clear proof, even from just photos. The design and legends are unusually crisp and detailed, and there's something about the rim too. And the colour - though not proving anything - is distinctive. But I agree with you about some other coins, especially VIP proofs of the 20th Century. Some of the just look to me like currency strkes.

    More Pennies

Someone numerically dyslexic thought they'd got a 1933 for a bargain price?

    1763 Northumberland shilling

Pewter-and-black is a sure colour mixture for a repro / fake.

    More Pennies

The sharpness of the rim edge is often a good indicator. Also, Geo VI proofs usually have mirrored fields especially FDC examples like yours would be if a proof. However, it could just as easily be an early strike and thus have crisp details.
  22. It's a very nice coin especially for the price, but I'd rate the grade lower : VF for the obverse, but not quite VF for the reverse. Pp 72 and 113 of the 'book'. (However, grading is partly a subjective thing).
  23. That was some race! I really thought Lewis had done it. My main surprise - given that Max went into the pits under safety car for some soft rubber - is that Mercedes didn't cover that and pit Lewis as well. Then it would have been an amazing final lap instead of the inevitable Verstappen overtake.

    1902 Crown - Sydney Mint?

The curious thing - if it's not kosher - is WHY anyone would create an unknown pattern with no provenance, for no reason at all, especially as it can be so easily doubted? Unless of course it was one person's pet project for domestic purposes only, but it then "got out".

    Halfpenny ID check

Presumably any coin that is Poor (by the UK grading) doesn't get a number, i.e. 1 is a not very good Fair but better than Poor?
