specific grading guidelines
wybrit replied to kuhli's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
Thanks for the feedback! I would also appreciate input on making those pages better (I still have a lot to go when I'm not doing my day job). The best thing would be a grading book so you can take it with you to shows. Websites have their limitations that way! -

It is pretty much a foregone conclusion that Colin would go for that lot. What a steal!! -
The man on the horse is St. George. The obverse is a portrait of Edward VII. If the coin is dated 1908 and is silver, measuring about 38 mm, then you have a fake crown. The only genuine crowns of that type are dated 1902 The only coins minted with St. George dated 1908 were made of gold: sovereigns and half sovereigns.

Hello all. I just wanted to reintroduce myself after riding in on aethelred's coat tails. I have been collecting British coins pretty much exclusively for longer than I want to admit. Once there was a gold mine of high quality UK coinage to be had here in the US, but there's been a British invasion consisting of chaps like Chris who have been buying up the stuff faster than a tiger with his tail on fire. It seems the weak dollar has made the coins rather affordable. I thought I would share with you one of my favorite posts from CU. Some of you have seen it all before. It's slightly modified to make it more understandable to those of you who aren't Yanks. I'd love some of your own translations as well. ______________________________________________________________________ I'm certainly not saying that all sellers are unscrupulous (they're not), but here are some common terms that should get the hair up on the back of your neck. These are mostly applicable to what I see when browsing the UK coin listings. What it says: RARE COIN... What it means: I rarely sell this stuff. Good VF... Barely VF. The first one I've seen... Because I haven't paid one jot of attention to these coins before. ++SUPER++!!! ++GREAT++!!! POS. GEM!! I don't see the wear on the coin that everyone else sees. The best one I've seen... I've seen maybe two of these - this one is the best. Blazing full lustre... The coin was whizzed/cleaned so that it has a wonderful shine to it. The scanner doesn't do it justice... No it doesn't - the coin is worse than the scan suggests. Better than the scan... Other way 'round. An insignificant scratch... Right across the cheek of the obverse. Brilliant UNC... A bronze coin with a trace of red found around the periphery. Mirrored fields... I held the coin up to a mirror and saw its reflection. I have 30 years of experience doing this... I've shafted people for 30 years. Lightly cleaned... Lightly brushed. Sorry, no returns... People were unhappy with how I graded, so I changed my return policy in order to reduce customer complaints. email me for a better scan... I'm hoping you won't notice the rim ding and will be too busy to email me. I'll sure be too busy to email you back! I'm not an expert grader, but the holder says "UNC..." I'm hoping you're not an expert grader either. GEORGIVS V DEI GRA : BRITT : OMN : REX FID : DEF : IND : IMP... I don't have a bloomin' clue what this coin is. Shipping is £5.00... I'll wrap the coin in Izal Medicated Toilet Tissue, put it in a WH Smith envelope and put a 50p stamp on it. Any white spots on the scan are from the scanner and are not on the coin... They're on the coin now! You grade it... Your hard luck if you get it wrong. ...except for one mark, it's a GEM!!... The mark is half the size of the coin. Check my feedback... I promise a retaliatory negative to anyone who says I cheated them - even if they are 100% correct. You will not see a better example... Until after you buy this coin that's for sale!! Found in my Grandfather's desk drawer... The old man was asleep while I ransacked his room. _________________________________________________________ (Courtesy of other forum members) I'm told that... ...by my imaginary mate. From Estate... Jelly jar full of culls. WOW!!! L@@K!!!... The coin is naff. I know absolutely nothing about coins... All the dealers I showed this coin to said it was a fake.

(Sorry if I repreat any of the info already caught) Halfpennies It would be nice to subdivide the bun head section into the major obverses. The major headings are "quietly" mentioned in dates 1874H and 1883. 1875H - is dated 1875K 1881H - is shown as 18&1H On page 13, the word should be "differentiate" (unless "differenciate" is a British spelling of the word - been away from the country a long time now). 1967 - I believe the wide rim and narrow rim can be told apart without a direct comparison by looking at pointings. The narrow rim is DEi (obverse pre-1967) and the wide rim is DEÃ (1967, 1970).

Either that or he didn't want competition from the Heritage auction. That coin hit $4,600 (about £2,550) this week. A report from the auction floor by a CU member indicated it was much less red than the picture suggested. -

Now I am jealous! Nice acquisitions, especially the 1922 and 1925 ME. -
Chris, Farthings Having searched hundreds of 1866 farthings I have now seen four examples with "RFG" instead of "REG." I think it is time that this would be noted. The Bun Head Obverse 4 heading (page 6) should be placed above the date 1874H instead of 1872. The dates should be sorted thus: Obverse 3: 1875 (large date) 1875 (small date, no "H") 1875H (extremely rare) Obverse 4: 1874H 1875H (all common varieties) 1876H, etc In two cases, the 1875H is shown as "1975H." Broken "F" on 1882H is the common variety. It should now be assumed that the prices shown for the unbroken F are in fact those representing the broken F. A large number of these have been sold both by Colin Cooke and Laurie Bamford. Obverse 5 should be indicated for bun head dates 1880-1895. There are, of course, mixes of Obverse 4 and Obverse 5 for dates 1880 and 1881. Over the past several years the entry for 1913 went missing. I see in your pdf this is still the case. 1915 varieties "BRITT" and "BRIT T" are both shown as "BRIT T" The common one is "BRIT T" Don't know why, but this jumped out at me: 1919 mintage 15,089,425 has the letter "O" in it. 1936 price format needs fixing. I'll be back to look at other denominations...

The London coin Fair
wybrit replied to Half Penny Jon's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
Back on topic, I stumbled on to a London coin fair the last time I visited the city with my family back in 1998. It was a marvelous time and coins were still reasonably priced then. The fair was held in a site near Kensington (Olympia) tube station as I recall. I sure wish I was there today! -

Kuhli is also a class guy. He can answer just about any question you have about any coin in the world. I have learned a great deal about coins from different countries from his postings at CU. -

Here is a picture of it: While not full lustre, it is still a very nice piece, pretty well struck. There is a "strange madness" in Spink suggesting that the low tide penny is worth more than its little brother. I've seen lots of uncirculated 1902LT pennies and have owned more than one. This halfpenny example is only the second I have ever seen for sale. I did not own even a beaten-up example of the low tide ½d prior to landing this one. -

GDJMSP tortured me with those images over at CU and now here! Those are lovely proofs. -
That's a pretty common sight. It is most likely to be a sample slab. Grading companies pass these out for free at coin shows in the US. That isn't to say that there aren't a lot of ignoramuses who slab coins that have little value - there are and they do.

King - George VI, in spite of his limitations as a leader going in, he helped Britain keep her morale up during the darkest days of WWII and won the hearts of most countrymen. In retrospect I think the British were very lucky indeed that Wallis Simpson showed up, facilitating the removal of what proved to be a very serious and possibly dangerous political problem. Mustn't forget George III. His biggest accomplishments: keeping George IV off the throne as long as he did. Queen - Victoria. She an dodged assassination attempt in 1840 and several other less significant attacks and became a legend. The British Empire was at its height.

How should i look after my coins ?

To answer the original question, I encapulate my key coins in Airtites. They are inexpensive and do not harm the coin. I think Lindner offers a similar product in Europe. -

rare 3 pence...why?
wybrit replied to newgold's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
They're not just expensive because of their mintage. I've seen bagfuls of both dates caried by London dealers. UNCs are very hard to come by and even high grade ones suffer from corrosion problems and lots of bagmarks. Same story with the 1950 and 1951 issues - very undervalued in high grade right now IMO.
