It certainly must be something like that (the first couple of bids are possibly genuine),although i don't personally see the point in doing such a thing...since it's not really funny or entertaining in my opinion.

Sold for almost £400,for a single £1 coin. It's not exceedingly rare, just a common circulated coin which isn't worth anything...well,a quid, obviously.I can't understand what the attraction was.According to the seller,it was won at his local from a "deal or no deal" fruit machine.Surely you'd have to be half crazy,to spash out that sum of money on a next to worthless coin.Perhaps it's me who is missing the point, here ???.

You've obviously heard of the old saying about having more money than sense....well this auction certainly proves that point Link

What can you suggest as a better pic (pic inside)
PINMAN replied to Sergy's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
I also say that the first one is the best of the bunch.Actually, the first one looks as if it's in a far greater condition than the third.....quite an amazing difference.I've often struggled to get reasonable results, partly due to the fact that i've only got a cheap lower end camera. I've found that if i move further back, and take some snaps, then zoom in via a paint program,i get far superior images than my previous efforts (not that i was all that close in the first place). Not that the above will apply to yourself, since your no doubt using far better equipment than i possess, but may be useful to somebody else, hopefully. -
Please have a look at the following Penny, which recently sold on Ebay.......... Link .......and then try and come up with a reason, why it sold for so much.I've looked in a couple of (up to date) books, and neither of them value this particular coin,at anywhere near the price that it actually sold for, considoring it's grade (it even has a few tiny edge knocks, too).

1874 Victorian penny
PINMAN replied to PINMAN's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
A big thanks to all,who have kindly provided me with some real useful information,i really am most grateful.I'd certainly like to have all the available info on these different varieties which exist, not only increase my knowledge of such coins, but also for the odd occasion, when i may come across something, when such available info, would prove to be useful. Having said that,i'm not too sure that i'd personally go out of my way,to hunt out such rare minor variants (or even unrecorded stuff)....but like i've said,it would no doubt come in handy from time to time. Thanks once again,to all for your time....i'll certainly check out the book suggestions. -
1874 Victorian penny
PINMAN replied to PINMAN's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
I must confess, that i'd be quite interested to learn about all the different varieties that exist,no doubt that it would be an interesting read.At the moment,i'm only aware of the more common differencies.....such as a beaded or toothed border, found on an 1860 Penny,or a normal or low tide,on the 1902 Half Penny (the obvious stuff). Thanks for the book suggestion,i'll have to drop Mrs Pinman a hint, especially since Christmas isn't too far away, now . -
1874 Victorian penny
PINMAN replied to PINMAN's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
I believe it to be an F-67....... Obverse 6, Reverse H, Rarity R-12......... A scarcer variety of the 1874's Just goes to show, how totally useless the books which i rely on,are, with only three different varieties being mentioned.....1874 / 1874 H / & 1874 with later (older) bust.Makes you wonder if the seller was aware of this fact, too, since there was no info refering to the details that you have kindly provided, within his/her auction. I really must invest in some better books,at some future point. Thanks for your assistance, regarding this coin. -
The description for this auction, makes me laugh. Not exactly a great pic,but good enough to see what sort of state, the coin in question is. Link Slightly worn ?

Hi guys....i need two bits of info, regarding the above coin,if someone would be so kind.Firstly,is this a second or third issue Shilling ?. I tried selling this particular on Ebay, recently, and it didn't attract any bidders.Wasn't too sure what price to start the auction off at,so i decided to begin it at a mere £9.99,and let the bidders decide it's value. This really is a stunning UNC example, even though my photography skills may not suggest this. I honestly thought that i'd have no problems selling it,especially since the auction starting price was so low...or what i'd class as low, anyway. Did i really overprice such an outstanding coin ?.I just can't understand why it didn't sell.

1926 George V Shilling
PINMAN replied to PINMAN's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
I expect to have plently of spare time, tomorrow,so i'll have some further attempts at producing better quality pics of this coin.I'll also try again,to determine which issue it is (thanks for the pointers regarding that). Could the polished appearence, just be down to the reflection of the camera flash, reflecting off of the coin ?.I have tried grabbing some decent pics without the flash, and had no joy whatsoever (way too dark)....although i admit that i could brighten them up a tad,via a paint program (didn't really want to resort to that, though). Having browsed through two different coin books, the lowest value for either issue in an uncirculated state that i could find, was £40.Due to that,i thought that a starting price of £9.99,would be okay. After reading the above comments, the pic was at least partly to blame, for this coin not getting any bids. Thanks to all for your response,i appreciate it. Chris,i'll respond via a PM,in a few moments time. -
Hi guys.I recently acquired this early Victoria Scottish penny token pictured below, and wondered if anyone on here, could point me in the right direction,to any available info on it,and also,if anyone has any idea,as to what the value might be.Any help would be much appreciated. As you can see,my picture taking skills have improved, although i haven't quite reached the David Bailey standard, yet lol.

Well i've had a ton of personal stuff to deal with recently(family problems),and that's prevented me from plonking myself down in front of the keyboard, for any real length of time.Hence not having got around to doing any research on this particular token/coin,so far.Hopefully the situation will change real soon. -

Hi Peter, thanks for the link.Lovely token...certainly puts my example to shame.Still,as mentioned earlier on,i only parted with a few pence when i purchased this particular token,so i haven't exactly lost out. Nice to finally see a copy with such detail . -

PINMAN replied to basecamp's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
Hi you were right the first time, I was hoping someone could make the images visible to all rather than have to click on the link as I cannot for some reason do this at my end. Oh,okay, thanks for clearing that up.I only removed the image afterwards, since i had second thoughts, that perhaps you meant something else.Anyway, there are several places on the net that will host images for you.If you need a good reliable one, just let me know, and i'll point you in the right direction. Just follow the instructions given by Hussulo, and you can't go wrong. When you upload an image to one of these places that hosts images, just copy the link, once the upload is complete, and then paste that into the window which will pop up,when you click on the tree image to add the pic to your post.It may sound a little hard, but trust me,it really isn't. -

Hi Colin. My original post(before i edited it) was only about the comment from basecamp, regarding the upload of images to this forum....i at first thought that he merely wanted the image instantly visable, rather than having to click on the link to observe it.So i did actually do this for him,and then thought that perhaps that's not what he meant,so i removed the image lol.I'm not certain what he meant,by his request. -

Just thought...this probably isn't what you meant lol. Please ignore my above post....made a bodge up,and now can't delete it. -
I recently bought a coin off of Ebay, which went missing in the postal system...thankfully,the coin in question, wasn't an expensive one.Anyway, the seller and i were discussing the Registered post option, and i received the folling messgae from him. "Hi, I can assure you I have on many occassions claimed from the Post office when coins have gone missing, And all I have received is a complimentary book of first class stamps as coins or any sort of money is NOT protected, And the maximum compensation is £27.50 for anything else, I have suffered more losses with recorded delivery than First class stamp only, It is simply a con." The bit that i personally find hard to believe,is the part about coins or any sort of money not being covered via Registered post.Although i've bought quite a few items from Ebay,i haven't actually sold all that much, and on the rare ocassion that i have,i've opted to use just the standard post, since the value hasn't ever been too high....hence not knowing what the score is regarding coins and the Registered post option. Anyone care to enlighten me about this stuation ,please.BTW,i did get a full refund for the coin that went astray,i'm just curious as to if his info is true or not.

Coins that go missing in the post, using registered post.

25-30 years ago,i'd have agreed 100% with that statement, but now, well,i'm not so sure.I'd like to believe that it's true....perhaps you are right (or is that just wishful thinking ? ) .I would imagine that there's a reasonable amount of honest/trustworthy people about, but even so,i still reckon that there's a lot more bad pennies out there now, than there was a couple of decades back,or so. I've never requested Special Delivery before, when it's not been an option.Certainly something that i shall correct with some of my more expensive purchases in the future, though.Regarding the extra postage costs involved.....it would probably be easiest,if you requested an updated invoice, before paying for the item in question.Just a thought . -

I think we've all been guilty of running down the postal system,at some point. But to be fair to them,we must remember the huge amount of mail that they deal with each year.Okay,i'll admit that they aren't exactly my favourite people either, when they manage to lose any of my mail, but even so,i still couldn't deny the fact that they do a fairly good job overall.People have moaned and whinged about the recent price increases, regarding packages & parcles, but weren't they losing money on these things, before the costs went up ?. Anyway,i've had yet another reply from this particular seller, and i just had to let you know what was said, just to prove that there are still in fact,a few remaining decent people left on this planet of ours. "Hi Steve, Yes token undamaged, I believe the jiffy bag got stuck in the sorting machine and probably not found until the maintenance of the conveyors took place, I have had similar instances before. Coin I will send to you in the morning, Have it on me for all the hassle it caused you.PS I am not a dealer just have been a serious collector for over 40 years and still do, Although Ebay gives me the oppurtunity to sell my surplus and gives me funds to buy what I fancy." To be honest, the token hasn't really caused me any real grief at all, especially as he was kind enough to give me a full refund (via Paypal) within 6 hours of my first contact with him. No idea why it was eventually returned to him,as in the past(on the rare ocassion that something's been damaged in the post),everything has still been delivered to me,still, rather than going back to the original senders address.....very odd. The amount involved with this transaction, was £5.No,not a huge sum....but how often does a complete stranger, give you five quid for free ? . -

Here's an update to this transaction.Just received the following message from the seller. "Hi Steven, Hampshire token that went astray, arrived back here yesterday, Packaged damaged in transit with note of apology from the post office." I'm so glad that he's got the token back, since any little doubt that he may've had, that i might've been trying to diddle him,has obviously gone.Even though i'd personally never do such a thing,he's not going to know this for sure. It took best part of a month, for him to get his token back. Why it's taken such an excessive period of time, for this to happen,is beyond me. Shall i ask him if he got another free book of first class stamps, for the inconvenience caused -

As you obviously know, with some of these Ebay auctions, you only get a choice of either first or second class mail.I must admit though, that you normally only find this, with the lower value stuff.Problem is,as a buyer,i've often purchased items in the £5 - £20 range,so i've taken countless risks, with the vast majority of these transactions, since there's often no option for Special Delivery. I'd be doing myself a couple of favours,by concentrating on the more expensive stuff, instead of aiming mostly for the lesser valued items.Firstly,i'd lose the element of risk....and secondly, the more expensive sought after coins, will obviously be a far greater investment.I do buy higher quality stuff, but not so often. As a seller,i rarely encounter any problems, since i seldom sell anything. -

Obviously, the only way to go,if your sending off anything of any real value,is to send it via Special Delivery. But it seems that your buggered if the coin in question, has next to no value at all, since your not going to be keen on splashing out an extra £4.00,if the contents are only worth a few quid...you could even find yourself out of pocket no doubt,in some cases. The only possible way around this problem, has been suggested by Chris........ Quote"lie through your teeth...if it goes missing then how are they ever going to know the package contained a coin?"Unquote. Thanks to all for your response,it's appreciated. -
There's a couple of titles which i shall be buying sometime soon.A decent coin album, and a few other bit and bobs, are probably going to be future purchases, too. My link to this site, takes me straight to this forum.I just hadn't bothered looking at the rest of the site, until now.

On offer here,we have three George V Shillings, all in a high grade condition. First, the 1931 example. I don't claim to be an expert when it comes to grading, but this particular coin, has got to be UNC ,without a doubt. Next is 1928. As you can see,it's obviously been in circulation for a small period of time.I would personally class it as at least VF+,maybe even EF. And lastly, the 1926 example. Again, another one which has got to be UNC....razor sharp details.Judge the pics, and decide for yourself. All three coins, appear to have virtually 100% lustre to me.Assuming that i have correctly graded the above coins, then they have the following values, according to the 2007 Coin Yearbook. 1931 UNC = £30 1928 VF = £2 & EF = £10 still believe that it's nearer to EF,though. 1926 UNC = £85....if this example isn't the second issue, then please correct me. This comes to a total value of around £121 (book prices),assuming that i have correctly graded these coins, which i honestly believe that i have.Asking £50,which would include any postage charges too.I have been involved with hundreds of Ebay transactions, and have a 100% positive feedback record. If anyone is seriously interested in the above coins,i can provide my Ebay ID(via a PM),so that you can personally check out my excellent feedback record,if you so wish.
