  1. Chris...thanks for the info,it's much appreciated. As you will know from one of my other threads,i hadn't paid any attention at all,to the info at the top of the pages until recently. There's two titles which i intend purchasing,at some near future point.

Three George V Shillings for sale.

Chris, please except my sincere apologies,i honestly had no idea until now, that you had any conection whatsoever, with any of the listed coin books on this site.I've not really browsed through this site yet,i always come straight to the forum,to chat to you guys about my favourite hobby....hence not knowing the situation. I must confess, that i don't yet possess a copy.Got to admit that it looks good value for money though, especially compaired to that other book, which cost me more than twice that price. Even though i only had to observe the info at the bottom of your posts.....i just honestly hadn't noticed it.Again,i apologise.
  3. Yep,i couldn't agree with you more.I do intend to purchase a decent book at some future point,to assist me with this.I have got this years "Coin Yearbook",but as you probably know, that mainly just covers the mintages and current values, which is obviously handy, but not really everything that i want. There is some other info in it,but nowhere near as much as i'd like. Another part of this hobby that i personally find exciting,is the hunt.Ebay is the easy option(and the expensive one too lol),but isn't nowhere near as much fun,as discovering something good at your local Bootfair or charity shops,even....it just isn't the same,in my opinion.
  4. I did an image search earlier on,which did bring up another example of this particular token(William IV 1837 if i remember correctly).I didn't really pay all that much attention to it,since i was only trying to find an example of the exact date that i have aquired. I was just hoping to find a little info on it,if possible.I realise that it's probably not going to be worth all that much(especially in such a low grade state),but no doubt that the value, has got to be greater than the 50p that it cost me.
  5. Thanks for the info,Chris...although it's probably well known common knowlodge to the vast majority.Geography & history, never have been my strong points.Finding some info on this particular token, will no doubt be much easier now .
  6. Still far from perfect, but here's some pics, that are certainly better than my last attempts. And the reverse
  7. Will be receiving the following 1834 miss struck William IIII Penny, within the next few days. My only worry,is the price tag.Just over £113 with postage.Would you truthfully pay such a sum for this particular coin ?.
  8. Just realised that i've posted this topic in the wrong part of the forum .My apologies for that, please feel free to move it,if you so wish.
  9. I've only recently got back into this hobby(around the same time that you started),and have mainly gone for the Victorian, and post Victorian stuff. My collection mostly consists of silver, although i have gone for a few choice copper items too. To me personally,i believe that the most important thing about this particular hobby,is that you have fun doing it.To do that, your collection doesn't have to contain countless valuable items....so long as your having fun, that's all that matters. Regarding Tokens.....don't really know all that much about them myself, either, but there certainally seems to absolutely thousands of real interesting ones out there.....out there,as in Ebay lol.Not really the best of places to go to,to add to your collection, but it's an easy option, although an expensive way of doing it.It's quite surprising, just how much some of those Tokens can fetch.
  10. Looks like it's time for a camera upgrade.Afer around 20-25 snaps,i still hadn't managed to improve anything over the day before's efforts. If fact the pic below, was the best that i'd come up with, and it's still far from being any good,as you can see.
  11. I'm afraid that i don't possess a scanner,at this moment in time.As already mentioned,i believe my only hope now,is to have another attempt outside.Whilst trying to achieve something half decent indoors,i found that leaving the flash on,would produce real bad flash reflections, off of the coin(even when taken at an angle(not directly overhead)),and turning it off, resulted in images, that were way too dark to do anything with, even though i attempted to improve them via a couple of paint programs.I'll see what results i get, when i retry in broad daylight.
  12. Well, after countless attempts at trying to supply better quality pics of this particular coin,i finally give up.Either my little Nikon Coolpix 4600 digital camera just isn't up to close work,or my Photography skills, are far worse than i thought.I've tried stacks of different ideas, and nothing seems to work,or at least not as good as what's already available. The only other idea which springs to mind,is to take the thing outside on a clear bright day,and see if i have any joy then.Until then, please except my apologies.
  13. Hi John. Some very interesting thoughts there,my friend.I personally, would imagine that the semi strike ocurred first, and that's the reason why there's no traces of the rim etc (full strike wipes out any evidence of that, perhaps ?)...just a guess though obviously. I'm certainly no David Bailey, when it comes to Photography, but i'll sure give it my best shot,to improve apon what's currently available. I'll probably have to let the pics do 99.9% of the talking, since this is an area, that i've not really encountered before now.
  14. The first thought that i personally had, when i came across this particular coin, was the fact that it was quite an amazing misstrike.Sure,i've occasionally seen other fairly impressive misstrikes too,but nothing quite as spectacular as this.Obviously i was aware of the coin's low grade state, but i didn't let that didn't discourage me enough, to prevent me from placing a bid on it,since the opportunity to own something simular to this, may never have come my way again.Perhaps this isn't the case, since misstrikes,is an area that i have very little knowledge about. The thing that i can't get over,is the fact that this particular coin, has obviously been in circulation for quite an excessive time......you'd have thought that it would've ended up in some collectors hands, well before this was possible (any explanations ?). Thanks for the response,it is very much appreciated.

    Hi

Hi guys. Just wanted to say a hello,to all members of this forum.I've spent the last few days, reading through the different threads within this site, and decided that i'd like to be part of it all,too (a big thanks to Chris, for activating my account). I'm not a complete newby, when it comes to coin collecting,i was into this hobby as a teenager, too (many many moons ago),but had to sell off my entire collection, since it was the only way, which would enable me to purchase my very first car. Anyway, glad to be here, and hope to provide some useful posts / threads. Steve.

    Hi

Leaving the hobby was easy,i was young,i'd just passed my test, and i honestly couldn't see any other alternative way, that i'd realistically be able to purchase my first car, other than parting with the entire collection.I was on quite a low income at the time,so attempting to accumulate enough dosh via my wages, was certainly out of the question,it would've taken me eons. No idea whatsoever, why it took me so long (best part of three decades) to get back into this wonderful hobby, and i can't even place the blame on having kids or getting married, either .

    Hi

Hello Hussulo. Thanks for your kind welcome. It broke my heart, when i sold off my coin collection as a youngster, but i'd only just passed my driving test, and was extremely eager to get myself a car.....of course, the novelty of it all, lost it's appeal after just a few weeks lol.Needless to say, that i'd not do the same now,if i were faced with the same situation. I can remember at the time, that a couple of coins shops which i frequently visited, would often have sovereigns,in the £20-£25 price range.....shows you how long ago this was. Hi Red Riley. Thanks for your welcome, too. My main interest,is in the Victorian era, although the post Victorian stuff,up to and including George VI,also has a certain amount of appeal.I mainly collect pre 47 silver, but am sometimes tempted by some of the rarer copper bits, which become available. I keep trying to locate some coin shops, which are within driving distance from where i'm located(Sheerness,Kent),but haven't had any joy,so far.Ebay is easy and convenient, but it's so bliming expensive, that i want to find some kind of alternative.
