Your Beginning Collector Being Burned Story?
Geordie582 replied to scottishmoney's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
I got burned when I sold my first collection to buy my first computer ( a Sinclair, it was that long ago!) I had ammassed a great collection of early Victorian & Edward VII silver from Malta, mostly EF, where it was in circulation at the time. I also had a number of Saxon and Norman pennies that I'd give my eye teeth for now. The money only just covered the cost of the computer, which, although well used in learning programming, never lived up to the quality of the collection lost. -
I agree on the value of artifacts. Should surely be worth more than Beckam or Posh?

What can you suggest as a better pic (pic inside)
Geordie582 replied to Sergy's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
I agree! The first. Photographing coins is a difficult past-time. (Especially UNC or Proof!). If anyone has the definitive answer, please post it!!! -
That's the one! but in that condition I don't think you'll find any buyers. Sorry. Unless Chris thinks differently.!!

Just scanned your book, Chris, on Base metal Roman coins & on page 28 there is a dead ringer for this coin. Given as Marcus Aurelius period 3 Commemorative CRB165. Have a shufty!

I'm agreeing with you HC. I just want to point out that there is more not known about our early coinage than is recorded. All the publications are merely opinions when you get down to it! My interest, Edward I/II/III provides a plethora of random marks, pellets, reversed letters etc. that have really only been guessed at! They say they are "moneyers marks" to show who and when. Who Really knows? -

Here we go! If the 'P' at the end is a blundered 'T' then the first letter is surely a 'T' making it even more obscure! "TILDE" in place of "PILDE". (Not know either) -

"WILTHE" sounds about right for the era - probably the forerunner of Wilfred? I've trawled my literature without success, though! -

OK! HC I tend to agree, after a little experiment I have just made. There are still a few puzzles in the legend. Why PA at the end? Here's the result of 30 mins of work on PSP. Pity there is no program that would 'peel' the legends and straighten them in one go! -

Wow! Great coin. As far as I have been able to decipher Annulet & Piles issue 1104-1105 PILDE ON T(?)ANT(?)V(inverted). The question marks are because I think the 'T's are retrograde and a guess. If I'm right this puts it as Taunton mint. Over to you YOC? -

I've never understood why Coincraft publish great lists of moneyers for Henry II Short Cross coinage and after, but only mints before that. The moneyers would be adding their names to the reverses, so why no record? -

A picture is essential here. To show the problem;- Henry I moneyers used either C, CA(T)N or CANTLE. Stephen used CANT but also his own name on the obverse (or one of the barons) Henry II used CANTO on the Tealby issues. (no Canterbury coins were issued of the short cross issue) Richard & John both used their fathers name, HENRICVS, on the obverse of their coins and CANT on the reverse but, the moneyer you quote does not appear in the known list. Henry III ,again, although CANT is used, does not have the moneyer listed. So you see the problem - unless you've found an unlisted issue! -

New British Coins...
Geordie582 replied to hertfordian's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
A dangerous sentiment. You could wind up with another Stalin or even President Blair -
I think you'd be lucky to find any German coin shops. I travelled 2000 miles around Northern Germany and looked especially for them - without any sign! Pity my timetable excluded going to see Chris. Maybe next time!

Never mind! You can save on the postage if you buy a couple!

I did try the spreadsheet route, but found the whole system heavy work. As regular members know, I keep a catalogue in Word, showing photographs of the coins along with all the data (and notes) on each one. I keep it in A5 format and by keeping each reign as a seperate file, can print out a new page when any alteration has been made. Two loose-leaf folders hold the lot. Just another way to keep track.

Duly bookmarked! A useful site - especially for the 12th to 13th centuries. Great stuff! -
Maybe they are also inserting chips in cois so they can track how much money we have and what we spend it on. (Oh! How I love the conspiracy community!)

Coins stolen at COINEX
Geordie582 replied to Hussulo's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
I've just been watching BBC TV News where they say there is a problem of copper coins - pre 1992 - are being melted down, illegally, as the price of the copper content is greater than the face value. This applies to all countries. Our copper collections are therefore becoming rarer (and more valuable) -

q And everyone wonders why lots of people demand the return of the birch! I'm sure the upper echelons of IT know how to track these people, but count it as too costly to do anything -
Congratulations!!! Remarks re coins and babies - We have just been presented with another great grandson so coins now take second - no! fourth - no ninth place!
