    Politics yet again

Basically, I mistrust all politicians (& my son in law is one!) . Money gets power & privilege or Power gets money and privilege, either way the voter is the last thing on their minds once they are in!. You may claim Conservative credentials, Sylvester, but your wishes would fit more with Stalin that Cameron. More state control?? No way>

    Politics yet again

As long as Labour has the Scots to keep them and they continue to tinker with the constitutional makeup of this country, I can't see us ever getting Labour out! I also think that all the 'scandals' visited on the other parties are too convenient not to have been started by the left. Typical left tactics.

  4. I was just reading, over on Coinpeople site, of a theft of a coin collection, and it brought to mind an old hobby horse of mine. Whenever dealers send coins ( and other valuables) through the post, they take the opportunity to advertise on the packaging. Even just a return address showing the business of the supplier gives any casual observer a good idea of the sort of items to be found in the home of the recipient. It is obvious that any such packaging should be destroyed completely and not through the re-cycling system. But couldn't the advertising be stopped at source, reducing the danger?

That's a thought, too! I'll play with Paintshop Pro for a while and see what results I can get first. It's not that user friendly but we'll see

Hmm! Something to think about - maybe my next birthday???

    Photographing coins

I've tried that, but I'm not satisfied. In fact, I have a cut down plastic milk bottle as a diffuser, but the shadow of the camera remains. I'm talking about photographing, for instance, a £5 recent issue in uncirculated condition. Quite a mirror effect!

My problem is the reflection of the camera when photographing highly polished coins. I know tilting the coin or camera could prevent this, but the elongation resulting is not pleasing.

    Saxon Coins

I have puzzled, for a long while, as to the lack of recognised Cumbrian or Reghed coins in the Saxon series. I am at present reading Sir Francis Palgrave's History of the Anglo-Saxons and find in the preface, describing the 'Witenagemot' of Edward the Confessor, a statement that the 'King of Cumbria' occupied one of the first echelon seats. It seems peculiar that such a powerful 'kingdom' never produced any coinage before that time. Has anyone any other thoughts on the matter?

It wasn't 'Buy now' and I think, as it was listed "Edward penny?" someone put him wise and he (sorry, she/it) has removed it and it may reappear with a higher start price!

    Saxon Coins

I'll let you know if I come across anything interesting in my trawl of the web. I had spotted an 'esterling' ( Contemporary copy of Edward silver) being touted as Ed III on ebay, but, for some unknown reason it disappeared from the site next time I looked. Just another of my interests and - no! - it wasn't out of time.

    Saxon Coins

Sylvester - It's possible that Geoffry, being a 'mere' count just used the currency available. Saves money! I would pick the Plantagenets. I had thought it a nice defined range within my reach, but, as I've said with respect to date saving, there is always a coin in your series that you just can't get!

I agree. "is there no satisfying the man".

    Saxon Coins

I bought my first Cnut helmet penny in 1956 for £8 in VF. Perhaps the prices haven't moved as far as you think? I edited because I've just noticed I'd put my purchase at 1056. I'm not quite that old!

    Saxon Coins

I know I'm digressing here, but have you come across any coins of Geoffry V of France? He was the founder of the Plantagenet dynasty.

    Saxon Coins

Thanks! Sylvester. I think I'd already considered most of your points. The boundaries of kingdoms in that period were flexible, and names changed on a regular basis. Hence, Brense - Reghed - Cumbria - Northumbria, seems to be the progression of this neck of the woods. I just think that with every minor king producing his own coinage, at the time, there should have been some sign of coins from here! I don't think any ruler here would want to be left out!?! I suppose mis-attributed coins is the favourite answer.
  19. It's said "you have to be mad to be a numismatist". Looks like they're right!
  20. I go even further and am collecting cut halfpennies and farthings of the Plantagenets. Money has a lot to do with it! I'd really like to collect all the kings of Northumbria, but there's little chance of that.

    don't know where to start

I do!!! When my wallet is empty, which happens more often these days!
  22. Grading of Hammered is not so much a science as a 'wet finger'! Try to grade some of Henry II 'Tealby' pennies and you'll see what I mean.

It's not the dogs - it's the owners! Feckless most of them!

    don't know where to start

Don't get hooked up on date runs. You are bound to come up against that astronomically priced date you MUST have. Suicide is the next step!
