1933 Penny tin foil impression
Badger replied to azda's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
I got an altered date in an envelope marked 1933 penny amongst a large bulk lot from London Coins about 5 years ago. At the moment the old man has it sitting in the oddments tray in the cabinet. May well be worth passing it on to some total imbecile on ebay!!!! I know, I was very tempted to sell one of my altered dates too. It was only last year that 2 were sold on Ebay. I bought 1 of mine for £32 and my friend made one for me. It takes a lot of patience and a very steady hand. It took my friend 5 Pennies (1931s) to make one for me and about 2 hours. I don't have them or pictures here but I will take them over next time and add pics with close ups. They are quite obviously altered but still quite good. A couple of people have asked me with a smile on their face 'do you have a 1933?' their faces totally change when you say yeah, show them and ask what the fuss is about with a 1933 -

They were sold on ebay if memory serves? Yes they were, I don't know who the buyer was so I am unsure if this is one from the trio? -

As far as I know, these are foil imprints of the real coin. If it is the same one I know about, it was sold as part of a lot of 3 a few years back, 1933, 1954 and 1862 coronet, they realised good money when sold. Here are the pics of the lot of 3 Extremely well done and as you say difficult to do -
Insurance for your collection
Badger replied to £400 for a Penny ?'s topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
Hi, no I didn't have to submit any photos of the specifics. I do have photos just incase the need for a claim arises as we all know how the insurance companies can be in times of claims. Hopefully that time will never come though. -
Insurance for your collection
Badger replied to £400 for a Penny ?'s topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
Hi, I use Aviva and have them insured as an addition to my home and contents. My payments increased £12 per month onto my existing payments, which I thought was very reasonable. They ask for a total valuation(My own valuation I may add), and also specific details e.g. denomination/date/any other info you can give like variety etc on any single coin or set valued over £1500 They also asked if they were kept in a safe or lock box, or just in a cupboard or on display etc It was aksed also if all or any were taken out of the house, for exhibits, personal or other reasons. When I said occasionaly, they said they would insure a 1/4 of the whole value of the collection to be taken outwith the home at any one time. On the policy, It was all written down correctly with the total collection and my description of all the specified items. It was easy to do as it was an English person I was talking to (NO OFFENCE INTENDED TO FOREIGNERS) and they had done similar insurance add ons before. Badger -
Hi, I think it is a token or play money, not sure on the age of it, I have came across quite few before usually within coin oddity bags with tokens and medals. All the ones I have had were also blank on the back. Badger

are there sought after die numbers in the victorian silvers?
Badger replied to scott's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
Hi, as a collector of Die number of 6d, Shillings and Florins, in my experience I would have to say that there are some more collctable die numbers than others that would bring a higher premium. Being that some major varieties e.g. 1879 Shilling die 13 is the 8 over 6 variety, this would make die 13 more collectable than the other 1879 die numbers as this is the only die number to have this error. Another example would be the 1865 Florins with the colon after date, which are a lot scarcer than the no colon type, the colons were struck with dies 41 to 51, so I would say these die numbers are more collectable than the others. There are quite a few more examples of this with the 1878 DRIT Sixpence which is die 6 (there is also a standard BRIT die 6)etc etc. Just like dates of any coins you get common, scarce ones and rare ones, this goes for die numbers too. If you search for 1879 Shillings with die numbers (which range from 1 to 26), you will notice that dies 1 and 2 are very much more common than the other numbers. I can't imagine that there are many die number collectors, so die numbers without any of the major varieties mentioned above would generally command the same prices unless it is an unrecorded die/date combination that was needed by most die collectors which then would see increased bidding over a common die/date combination. 1887 sixpence jeb on truncation rarety
Badger replied to chris's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
Hi again, here ia a scan of the Sixpence and Shilling next to each other. Notice on the Sixpence that the cross on the crown overlaps the border teeth but on the Shilling it is well clear of the border teeth. Badger -

Hi Chris, here are the scans of my Sixpence with JEB on the truncation and a Shilling, you can clearly see the difference in heights and shape of the bust from the rim and the relation of the letters to the Crown at the top of the coin. If your picture is of a Sixpence with the same obverse as a Shilling it must be a new unrecorded type. Could you post a picture with your JEB ON and JEB BELOW next to each other for comparison please. SIXPENCE SHILLING Regards Badger -

Badger replied to chris's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
Hi Chris, are you sure that you don't have a Shilling? All 1887 Jubilee Shillings have JEB on Trunc. The bust on the coin you have pictued is far too high (further from the border teeth) to be a Sixpence. The Jubilee bust on the Sixpences basically sits ontop of the border teeth. Badger -
Hi, could anyone advise on a good reference book(s) on tokens? It is for Farthing, Halfpenny and Penny tokens issued in the UK in the 18th and 19th centuries, the ones like the Birmingham 1811 Penny, the many Halfpennies in 1791, 1792 etc, I believe they are called merchant or condor tokens?. Many Thanks Badger

Hi, does anyone know where I could buy a copy of the CD that has all the scans of the Victorian Halfpenny varieties? I believe it was issued by Malcolm Lewendon. Many Thanks Badger

A good token catalogue
Badger replied to Badger's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
Hi all, thank you very much for your recommendations. The full 5 parts of the Dalton and Hamer is around $1000 and the Seaby 2nd edition is around $60 so I guess the Seaby one is the one to start with! The web sites are great too, thanks for those. The book is for a friend who has a lot of these tokens and wanted something to identify them with, I'm sure he will be very happy with all sites and books. Many Thanks to all Badger -

Hi Gary, nice Halfpenny. I don't suppose you (or anyone else) know of a flat neck ( / wide date (a) for sale? Its the only 1 of the 4 1911 pairings I still need. I have came across only 2 of the hollow neck / close date which you have pictured and sold my spare earlier this year. Badger -
Hi everyone, this is my first time posting on the forum, and I'm wondering if anyone can explain how to put a picture into the posts? I've tried clicking on 'add picture' but it asks me enter a URL, and I have no idea what a URL is?? Thanks
